c860, initial questions.

ok, i got a c860 from shirtpocket.co.uk.

it comes with an english rom and the opie-embeddedkonsole console which works better then the standard one.  it has some shell scripts to move the fixed font in and out, but i just copied it in and left it.  i assume it affects hancom word or apps like that.  i\'m pretty much a console person - the netfront web browser being about the only useful gui app for me.

so with that in mind, i\'m curious about the following things:

how do i get a control key?  \"cancel\" is escape.  fn+shift+ < or > give me { or }.  and the arrow keys work fine (though the fact that they change orientation with the screen was kinda tricky).  can i remap those two japanese keys?

is there a decent, stable x11 system i(\"rom\"?) for the c860?  i tend to be an x bigot, and i miss things like xev and xmodmap.

native dev tools.  i snarfed the dev tools on http://s91215199.onlinehome.us/zaurus/, but i get invalid binary format when i run them.

is there a site that describes the boot steps for a zaurus?  i have a good feeling for the unix/linux boot process on x86 and sparc, i\'d like that feeling for this too.

Some of these questions can be found by searching the forums easily enough. For example:

Try searching on \"customize keyboard\" (select  \"Search for all terms\") for a good starting point.

The fact that there is a forum called \"X11 ROM/ pdaXrom\" might give the game away here :wink:

Try with Fn button, or remap using link already posted. If you use Shirtpockets console a lot, take a look here:

That is bitstream vera sans font, I\'ve installed it and it looks just great - small enough to get a lot of data on the screen, yet easily readable.

If you don\'t want to remap keyboard, probably shift-Fn-key sends control-key, like in 5500.

the customize keyboard thing was really helpful - thanks.  have it installed and configured.

i saw the pdaXrom site.  first it looks like they\'re going for windows compatability/connectivity.  except for one windows box i use for testing (and access vnc - i tried kpebble-vnc but it crashes) i don\'t need that.  second from what i\'ve read, the x rom seems unstable, it doesn\'t support rotation, and the support for the c860 seems poor.

is that all wrong?  am i reading out of date stuff?

i get the idea that dev tools are better for the oz and pdaXrom distros then what i have at the moment.  so i\'d like to switch to one like that.  but i have nearly everything i need on it at the moment.  i still need to build a native compiler and a native mingw32 cross compiler, but other then that it\'s all good.  and a vnc client would be nice.

i\'d just hate to lose all that for something not as good.

I looked at ShirtPocket too, but I thnk they are over priced SL-C860 £565. You can get them from Ebay (with conversion if you wish) for $680 or from Brando for about the same. Include the shipping cost and it comes to around $700 AKA £380.
I find ShirtPockets claims that its more than a locale change a little far fetched.

I will probably be installing OpenZaurus anyway. I\'ll be burning the £200 I will save on a 2.2GB CF microdrive, SD flashcard and a CF WIFI card.

Has anyone here used familiar on a Zaurus?

Yes but you also get a warranty, if I foul up my machine they will fix it and if they can\'t they send it back to Sharp, usually at the cost of shipping. They also supply a UK power adaptor. But moreover, for me, I prefer the piece of mind knowing there is someone here in my own country I can turn to for help, or shout at.

But, I found the conversion to English uncomfortable, I used Maslovsky\'s Cacko QT ROM 1.20 and it\'s nice having everything in English and no little square boxes, also Ctrl and Alt are mapped to the two japanese keys by the space bar.

£565 may be steep, but I think it was worth every single penny.

BTW, I paid more than that for a Sony Clie NX70V + 128MB Memory Stick when it came out, and that wasn\'t even in the same league as the C860.

Will shirtpocket still warranty the device even though you have changed the ROM?  - Am I right in thinking the shirtpocket ROM still has 60+ MB of Japanese dictionary embeded into it?
I assume (better be careful here you know what they say about assumption  ) that Maslovsky\'s ROM does not included the dictionary being 26MB or so and there for there is more space for installtion of other apps and file space?
Finally why don\'t shirtpocket start using ROMS like Maslovsky\'s?

You\'re right about Japanese dictionary in Shirtpocket\'s ROM.  :wink:
I\'ve browsed trough my 860 and found them. The question is, why did they leave that dictionary, since almost everything is converted to English?

Is there some *easy* way to backup their ROM before installing other? They do provide CD with original Japanese ROM and some information on how to convert it to English, but I find this rather uneasy to use. I\'d prefer an option to dump old ROM somewhere, and then dump it back if I find the new ROM dissatisfying...

Someone said something to me about using \'NAND\' flash (I may have that slightly wrong - but I am sure the ROM can be backed up which is exscatly what I want to do when I get the unit so I can then play around and if required can change it all back again - but If space is freed by getting ride of the Japanese dictionary can it be used for other things?
