Ambicom WL1100C-CF driving me NUTS
« on: April 15, 2004, 05:50:12 pm »
Ok, I\'ve posted something about this in the newbie section, but thought I might try here, also.

I have an Ambicom Wireless CF card, WL1100C-CF. I bought it because of all the terrific things I\'d heard about it here on these forums; I\'m running the delivered ROM (version 2.37) on a 5500. Well, at first the card was a little tricky to get working; I had to eject the card, reboot the Zaurus, insert the card, and then turn the Zaurus off and then on. THEN the card would work. Now, it\'s not working at all. I get a flashing green light on the card, and a Host Not Found message when I try to connect to the Internet.

Now, I know I\"ve configured my network settings and Wireless LAN settings correctly, because I have other wireless devices that are set up the same way and they work just fine.

Does anyone out there have tips on what might be the problem? I am within 10 feet of the access point, so it\'s not distance. Perhaps the card has gone bad? I haven\'t tried another card in the Zaurus; perhaps I should, but I\'d have to buy another, and then if that doesn\'t work, I\'m stuck with 2 cards I can\'t use.

I should say, the Zaurus does recognize the card. Cardctl insert and eject both work; cardctl status gives 3.3v 16-bit PC Card/function 0: [ready]

cardctl reset makes the light glow steadily, but it still won\'t connect.

Thanks in advance -

Is your wireless router a Linksys?  There is a known incompatibility between the Ambicom card and certain Linksys routers.  I am stuck with one too, and have no way to get it to work without rebooting the zaurus and unplugging the router and plugging it back in.
It\'s a pain in the ass.
Right now my z isn\'t even working for me, so I\'m screwed all around.

That\'s strange, I\'ve got an ambicom WL1100C and a linksys router (BEFW11S4), and they work flawlessly.  I am however running zynergy5600 on a (gasp!) 5600. I don\'t know about you, but I keep my router firmware up to date. Not sure if that makes a difference because my router firmware had been updated a few times before I got the wifi card. I love the ambicom, always performed flawlessly for me, and completely trouble free. I burned out a D-Link in 3 weeks, but I\'ve passed out on the couch with the ambicom online, and left it on for 12 hours and still no probs....

Yeah, my router firmware is the newest.  I found the info about the compatibilit issues through a pocket pc site, and Ambicom acknowledges the problem, and says to upgrade your firwmare.  I\'ve tried all the different 5500 roms, and it will not work on any of them. I\'ve tried manual and automatic settings for everything, and every combination.
Consider yourself lucky that it works for you.

sounds like your cf card has died. I have a similiar problem with a generic prism2.5 cf card. Worked great then died. Light flashes but nobody home. Check your networks tab and see if the signal status changes at all (mine\'s stuck on 53%).
And change to the 3.10 rom :-) faster and so much better.

Did your other wireless devices require configuration setting changes to work?  One thin I noticed about my Ambicom WiFi on my Zaurus is that it doesn\'t give you many options to change things... it simply looks for the defaults.

Is your router encrypted?  Is it hidden or is it broadcasting?

Just some ideas.  My work office has a Cisco router with which my Ambicom doesn\'t work because it uses a proprietary encryption scheme.

I\'m using nothing but defaults, no encryption or anything.
All my other wireless devices worked out of the box, no problem.

I\'ve used the firmware that it recommends, and have upgraded again since.  No dice either way.

Thanks for all the replies, peoples. I discovered that my card will work with other wireless networks, but not in my office.
The wireless set-up here is an Apple Airport. My connection has worked before; perhaps something has changed that I\'m not aware of.

Anyway, thanks again - at least I know my card isn\'t dead!
