Me too !

A master list of the tasks that need doing would be good, as we can figure out who will cover them. I would suggest multiple coverage as none of us are doing this full time.

Most of us are new to this so a little instruction will go a long way, we may be a little slow at first but like a fat woman falling down a stairs I am sure that we will gain an unstopable momentum !
Contact ced via PM, he will provide you with the nessesary information on building the ROM.

cacko ROM for the SL5600

Well, just so you know, I've been offered the position of maintainer for Cacko for the 5600. And I've accepted.

I won't be doing this full time (I do have other things to do -- school comes to mind), but during the summer I don't have too much to do, so I'll be working hard on it. I probably won't be perfect at it right away, so it's all of your job to point out whatever I'm doing wrong (weather it's a bug, a feature request, or something to do with the overall management of it), and maybe give me some insight into how to fix it.

Also all of you with both 5600s and Cxx0s, I'll need to know how similar to the Cxx0 ROM the 5600 ROM is when I first get something workable out of it (because I don't have a C-series, I don't have a clue what the ROM is supposed to look like, or how it's supposed to act under some circumstances).

Thanks, and I'm looking forward to start working on this by sometime early next week.
-Justin

Ok, I've got the stuff to start working on the 5600 version of the ROM.

Currently, I have yet to build a working version (the initrd.bin is still about 1.5 MB too large to fit on the 5600 by default, so no testing it yet, and I don't think I'd be able to safely set it up for re-partitioning the flash ROM yet), but I have some questions to put to the people who'd be using it when I've finished it (and a few notes about my own plans).

First, what features do you want in the kernel? The ones I currently are planning on setting up are disabling the PXA250 cache bug workaround, and adding in the pre-emptive options, making it similar to the special kernels by ced. Any other requests?

Second, I'll be setting up an IPKG feed for this ROM for a few reasons. One, I cannot fit some applications by default on the ROM itself, since I don't feel I could re-partition the 5600 without error, so the feed would be used to provide those. What other applications would be nice to have in this feed?

And third, since I'm still 1.5 MB off of being able to fit this ROM on the 5600, I'll need a poll from C-series users of this ROM too. I've already taken out the Opera, Netfront, Music Player, MPEG Player, Movie Player, and Kino2 applications, planning to put them in IPKs for installation choices (what works, and what is better to your needs) after the ROM is installed. What else can be removed that wouldn't cause major problems?

Thanks for your time.

Wireless support would be nice. And what about something like Ko/Pi integrated? I think you can leave out most applications and leave them to be installed later as the users want. Please also think about real built in rotation (preferably at the push of a button).

I'll see what I can do.

I'll see. Maybe I'll do something like putting the Sharp PIMs (the Datebook/Todo List) and the Ko/Pi both in IPKs, and do a similar thing to the Opera/Netfront thing, and let people choose what they want. And once Ka/Pi is working, throw that into an IPK too. (Reason being that some sync options require the DTM format to use.)

I'll see what I can do on the rotation at the hit of a button, but it'll probably not be easy (anyone who knows a way (on the 5600), please speak up...

Do NOT include premptive options - they don't add any real performance but render some kernel modules incompatible (in particular bluetooth).

This is what I'd suggest to include. At least that's what I'd include if I was maintaining this ROM.

 - Disable cache workaround
 - Disable CONFIG_SYNC_IO for faster SD and CF writes
 - Smaller boot console fonts
 - Ericsson phones IRDA fix
 - Updated wireless drivers, make sure that wireless extentions are enabled
 - Updated bluetooth drivers
 - Add USB Mass Storage support - use 5600 as a card reader.
 - Enable ext3 support (for those who need it)

Here you can download a set of patches and configs used in Cacko ROM 1.21 kernel:

http://web.mol.ru/~zaurus/cacko_ROM_kernel-1.21.tar.bz2

Not all of the patches apply to 5600, but at those that I listed above do.

Please also think about real built in rotation (preferably at the push of a button).

That's impossible without rebuilding Qtopia from sources and sources are not available...

maslovsky:
That set of patches is intended to be applied to a standard 2.4.18 source tree? Or one of the 2.4.18 versions specfic to the Zauri?

They should be applied to the Sharp's kernel source, available for download form japanese web site.

As I was looking through the kernel config... I can't seem to find this option anywhere. Is it perhaps "CONFIG_FS_SYNC" instead?

I feel sort of bad for having to do this... But I just don't have the time to work on Cacko for the 5600... In the over-two weeks I've had the rootfs and the kernel patches all of what I've been doing really doesn't amount to very much. I've built a couple kernels, and played around with the rootfs a little, and in the past week I haven't had the time to do anything... I haven't even gotten a flashable version yet.

Also, there doesn't seem to be much interest in this project either. I asked for suggestions a while back and only a single person came up with any. There hasn't been a post to this thread in over two whole weeks. I think that both the number of people using 5600s and the number of people interested in an alternate ROM has decreased. The C-series is more or less taking over the Zaurus market.

Also, from my albeit short time working on this, I do think it would work better if the maintainer owned both a 5600 and a C7x0, for reference, as to how things work on the Cacko ROM. I don't, unfortunatly, bringing up more roadblocks for work I tried to do on this.

If anyone who does have the time feels like working on this project, I would be willing to help a little, but I just simply do not have the time to do the bulk of the work.

Once again, I'm sorry for not being able to work on this.

May be it is too late but here what I wish for rom.
    1. Kernel with cash bug fixed, ext3 support, and possibility of overclocking.
    2. Bash shell for users and root
    3. GUI with very little apps preinstalled in it.
    • Clock (with alarm)
    • Good Calculator (scientific with 20-30 functions)
    • Standard Settings apps
    • Console, Root console, Advanced FM and Search
    • No Games, Opera. Hancom and PIM apps
    4. Repartitioned rom so I can use freed space for what I need[/li]
I’ll be glad to help with what I can but I'm newbie to Linux and Z so I don’t know how.
