PDF,DIVX,HTML Mainly resolution, Fluorescent Lamb
« on: May 10, 2004, 07:01:31 am »
Hi all,
I have receive my new friend SL-5600 on last friday.  It was marvalleous to handle such a thing in your hands. I hope every other geek can feel something similar or better,  by having a Zaurus...
I have had 3 major reasons to buy a handheld:
1- Organise data. Matches very good,
2- Read some documents and watch  divx,
3- Refresh my Unix/Linux knowledge and programmming.

I have downloaded qpdf2, and mediaplayer0.95/mediaplayer shell, video lan client.
Firstly I could not open videos which are downloaded with  divx 5.11, divx 4.0 and xvid codec whose resolution was 160x120. I have read several ex-posts but could not figure out the problem.

Can you advise on resolution, codec, and program combinations?

Secondly,
I have ınstalled QPDF2  and tried to read \"normal\" pdf. \"normal\" PC-readable pdfs. They are well opened bu t esolution/font size is unfortunately not very satisfactory/readable although the program seems usable.

Should I do a preprosessing on PDF documents?

Thirdly same problem occur on HTML files with OPERA.  So same question on the second item exist.

I use Sharp ROM v1.32 and think to try all the ROMs OZ/Zynergy/Cacko/pdaXrom. Before that I think to be familiar with Sharp ROM. I have downloaded abot 3-4 GB data from Net with webspiders and seems I  need plenty of time to play with my new poddle...

By the way is there two fluorescent lambs for frontlid  LCD or just one at left in SL-5600 models.

Thanks  ZUG  community whom I am proud of  being a member of it...

I\'ve not seen any glowing sheep in any zaurus

Sorry couldn\'t resist that one.

The 5500 has a single light (lamp) at the right hand side, I\'ve never seen a 5600 but (as sharp will not sell them in europe  ) but I would imagine they are the same as the 5500\'s in this respect.

qpdf2 and opera both use scalable fonts so you should be able to adjust the font size to what suits you.
Have you also tried opie reader? that is totally adjustable and gets daily use on my 5500 (currently reading the catcher in the rye) Ooops now I will have the fbi tracking my internet connection

Check out this site for tutorials on compressing video for the zaurus :-

Ps I am still in awe of my c760, welcome to the club!

by the way, pdaXrom has not been released for the 5600, and probably never will be.

Regardless of that if you think the fonts are small in the stock sharp rom, then you would hate the pdaXrom

I even bought TKCPlayer and it only plays \"some\" divx.  I think it is set up for Divx 4 or something, because I get some weird artificats when viewing Divx 5 video.  All in all I haven\'t figured out the video thing yet.  I have 1 file which plays well, but it doesn\'t take long before the video and audio our out of sync...

I wouldn\'t call the Zaurus a \"divx\" machine... yet.  I think that is still in its infancy.  Maybe next year...

What does everyone else think?

usenet, alt.binaries.e-books

I do of course own the book as well, but i just prefer reading them on the Z, and you don\'t need a torch. or have to do old fashioned stuff like turning pages over.

If I wanted to exercise my hand I could think of more fun ways of doing it that didn\'t involve paper.

The zaurus is also lighter and more portable than a book, but does need recharging, which is probably the only benefit of a real book.

I think mplayer just needs a little more porting work.  It\'s one of the best media players to be found anywhere.
