Cacko ROM Over/Underclocking suggestion...
« on: May 13, 2004, 01:16:12 pm »
I have a suggestion for the overclocking applet. It should have an \"Auto\" option where it automatically runs in one set mode eg. \"Normal\" when running on battery power and another set mode when on mains power eg. \"Default PXA255\".

This is speaking from the C760/860 POV

I\'m not 100% convinced that this is a good idea.

The biggest problem with overclocking is the extra heat.

The most heat produced is when the zaurus is charging and turned on.

This IMHO is the worst time to overclock your zaurus.

Either way, I very rarely overclock mine, and wouldn\'t really favor it happening without willfully instigating it.
just my 2pence worth.
Zaurus cl760, cacko QT rom. Zaurus sl5500 with TKCrom 1.0.

I just remove the applet, I don\'t like overclocking, I\'m well aware of facts about it, but I agree with zbones, the excess heat over time and it\'s cumulative effect on surrounding components would concern me.

(I love my baby too much)

I\'d like to see it removed by default, add it with an ipk if you want it.
Left Linux and Linux PDAs... sorry, got boring.  Switched to Mac.

Well both those options I suggested are actually normal running speed and underclocking. I agree setting it to automatically overclock is like dangling your scrotum in a blender.

Contrary to what the applet states the \"Normal\" mode actually runs the Zaurus at 200MHz where as when you first install the ROM it\'s set to run at 400MHz always, so by default the Zaurus is set to run at 400MHz ALL of the time which is NOT what the shipping rating is, 200 MHz normal mode, 400MHz Turbo mode is the default.

In the Cacko ROM\'s it\'s set to run at 400MHz in normal mode and 400MHz in Turbo mode, that\'s why there\'s a performance increase between the original ROM and Cacko ROM\'s.

The suggestion I outlined above would UNDERclock the Zaurus automatically when it runs on batteries to get a longer battery life and then remove the underclock when mains power was applied.

If I did not make a mistake, Z should run at its default speed with Cacko ROMs. It\'s totaly up to the user wether to over/underclock their Zs.

The performance increase should only be noticable for the C700 device, since the kernel has cache turned on and maybe some other kernel patches I\'ve applied. In any case, it\'s not due to overclocking.
