860 flash frenzy
« on: May 20, 2004, 05:47:02 am »
So I get this nifty new 860 and the first thing that I do is to install the Cacko Rom (1.21 with patch). No problem.

Now I go visit killefiz and start downloading some interesting apps.

As I install some of them, I notice that konsole disappears. WTF? I more or less tracked this down to installing opie based apps, so I avoided them after the next flash (I have gotten really good at this. lol...).

This sort of helps but I end up losing it again when I run some of these new apps. Another flash and back to square one.

More apps, this time I hit the LCD off button on the taskbar and the dang thing get into a mode where I can get it to startup for a second and then it shuts off. In the brief time that the screen is visible, the screen resolution is really large and cut off at half of the screen. Eventually it won\'t even start up. \'nother flash.

Yet more apps, things look good, but it gets into this mode where it reboots just about every time I close a program. Flash.

Okay, so now I limit myself to what I think that I absolutely need and install that. Things seem to be stable for the moment, no disappearing apps, no crashes.

I have noticed that most of my problems seem to stem from the \"old\" 5500 apps that I\'ve installed. The problem is that this isn\'t all that apparent what Z the app is designed for when you download the proggie.

So:

a) Is anyone else having this problem?
Is there a more stable ROM that I could be using?

I like the look of the Cacko ROM, but this is killing me

a) no... which apps have you noticed caused this? this group can cross reference for you
 I use pdaXrom -- but it\'s not qt based.  I don\'t need/want qtopia -- YMMV.

Some of the ipks from the opie sharp rom feed and some other apps - especially applets and input methods I\'ve found - can cause Qtopia to fail to crash, but the spawn inittab starts it again and it crashes and starts again ..............

If you have ssh installed and working you can ssh in from the desktop and delete the problem file/ipk and the next restart qtopia should be okay again. The problem is guessing which app causes the problem (generally it is caused by conflicting or missing libraries). It is not a problem with cacko, I have experienced the same thing with the stock standard sharp rom and the tkc rom - basically its a qtopia thing.

The best thing I\'ve found when installing apps from feeds/sites I\'m not sure work with qtopia is to install them one at a time - yes this is time consuming, but not as time consuming as constantly reflashing  Also whenever possible I install new apps to SD card the first time I install something so that I can pull the SD card if it starts a crash/restart loop.

I have found Cacko 1.21 and 1.21a very stable and have not had any of the problems you describe.

My install procedure:

1.  Follow the notes to flash 1.21 and apply 1.21a.
2.  Dump the new screen saver with: rm -f /home/QtPalmtop/plugins/applets/liblusscreensaver.so.*
3.  Restart qtopia.
4.  Do not assign passwords to root or zaurus (some install scripts try to su and fail).
5.  Secure your machine with /etc/rc.d/init.d/ssh stop or remove the link S17ssh.
6.  Press [Home] then Fn-1 for smaller icons.
7.  Press-hold addr, mail, text edit, todo and remove fast load.  I left cal fastload because I want alarms.
8.  Assign Application Keys (settings tab)
9.  Adjust Light&Power settings to taste.
10.  Reinstall known working ipks from SD card.  Reboot.

Thats is a general list of what I do.  My only issue with Cacko is that some apps do not follow the /?., mapping.

As for apps I only install one at a time, test, and remove if it does not work.

Thanks for all of the replies, I especially like the one about installing to the SD card first (for those apps that can be installed there of course).

And yeah, I install one at a time, sorry I didn\'t mention that. I didn\'t think about ssh\'ing from the desktop to fix things. Duh...

And things have settled down immensely, what I have installed is behaving beautifully

Next step is to make a list of the \"good\" apps and blow the rest off of my CF card.

Thanks loads for the tips!
