SL 700 Vs 5500

I have the option to get a (very) cheap SL 700C, instead of my 5500. I do want to upgrade to a clamshell at some point but I am not sure whether I would find that a 700 would be a retrograde step (rather than keep my 5500 and wait for a 750 or 860).

Specific Questions that I have are :


1. Does the lack of onboard RAM make a big difference to performance or can one make do with SD or CF cards

2. It is a Japenese model. I am assuming that it will not be too difficult to anglicise it?

Any one have any quick thoughts?

I have one quick thought: If you want to go clamshell anyways, do it.  It will no doubt be similar in specs to the 5500 but with a MUCH better screen/form factor.  Plus, you can then get into the pdaXrom and other new things only available for the clamshells - you\'ll join the latest and greatest.  

I wouldn\'t hesitate long enough to post if I were you, but that\'s b/c I want to go clamshell as well.

I debated for a while about whether or not a C760 was worth the extra $200 or so and eventually decided on the C700.  I\'ve found that the only annoyance with my C700 is the lack of RAM, but that isn\'t nearly as bad if you make a 32 MB swap file.  Storage isn\'t an issue for me since I have a 256 MB SD and a 512 MB CF.  The CPU is just about as fast as a PXA255 if you use a kernel that turns off the cache bug workaround.

I\'d say wait.... unless the 700 was EXTREMELY cheap.

If it is really cheap then I would suggest getting it.  It would be a good stepping stone until the 960 comes out.  I would suspect the rumoured device (4\" transflective with built in wireless) would address some of the weaknesses of the present C series clamshells.

In the end it wasn\'t going to be that cheap @ £150, so I decided against taking the impulse.

I wonder now whether to spend £400 and get an 860.

When is the 960 coming out? Presumably the spec is unknown?

Must agree - that amount plus your 5500 is TOO much IMO.  I guess \"cheap\" is a relative term and we all drew our conclusions on different definitions...

Ah - it was initially in the region of £50 , so at level I thought it was worth a punt !

if the 960 comes out .... I\'ll probably sell my 700.
if you\'re not in a hurry, lets see what happens next month.
