Changing the ROM on an SL-C860.
« on: May 26, 2004, 05:29:14 am »
Hi there,

I\'m a long time Linux user, but new to Zaurus PDA\'s.

I just got my SL-C860 ( with Enlglish translation ) from www.shirtpocket.co.uk and would like to try out some different ROM\'s.

Where can I download the standard English translated Sharp ROM if I want to go back to how it is now?

The PDA came with a Shirt Pocket CD, but I dont think this contains their standard ROM, but I could be wrong.

Thanks.

Jeremy.

Hello and welcome - I\'m a newbie here as well. The CD from shirtpocket just contains the conversion part - I.e the patch they install on top of the Jap ROM to convert it to English. - You will have to do a NAND backup of the original ROM or you can download the Jap one from various sites and then apply the stuff you\'ve got on the CD (just do a search on here for the sites offering downloads). I have heard of NAND restores being a bit tricky and people \'bricking\' (renedering their device useless) when doing NAND restores. However the install of other ROMS is done in a different fasion - I suppose the NAND backup/restore is kind of like ghosting (some one may know better). I have very little knowledge of Linux but have flashed by device with Cacko 1.2.1A ROM (twice as the first time I messed up the bluetooth part and it was easier for me to re-flash rather than try and sort out the problem). As I understand it the Cacko ROM is really a full english conversion of the orig. Jap. ROM - and it\'s seems very good to me - but I have not tried any other ROM yet so I have nothing to base by rating on other than it\'s a load better than the org. Jap. ROM. For the Cacko ROM look under the Sharp ROMS forum it\'s stuck to the top - if you follow the instructions it\'s very easy to install and I shouldn\'t think you will want to go back to the original ROM - you will need a 256 Flash of SD card in order to do the NAND backup and Flash the new ROM (128 is not big enough).

Hope this helps but there are a lot of other questions similar to yours on this forum - have a search...

Jeremy,
I also have a C860 from shirtpocket and I\'ve happily done NAND backup and restores from the various ROMs I\'ve tried. I\'d recommend that you create a NAND back up of your original and create one whenever you are going to attempt something that my screw up your OS e.g. install software. I have made the mistake of editing startup scripts - qpe.sh, installing dodgy software etc. It was easy to recover as I just did a NAND restore. I think of them like harddisk images.
I have installed the CACKO QT 121a and X11 ROMs.

How do I do the NAND backup and restore on the 860?

I assume I need the service menu\'s. I found some instructions on this site, and could not get the menu to work.

This was the instructions wich included pressing the D and M keys. I followed them to the word, but I guess I didn\'t do something right as the menu\'s never came up.

Can you give a quick note on how you did it.

Thanks.

Jeremy.

Jeremy, Haven\'t logged on for a few days.
The instructions on this site regarding the service menus ae spot on. The key I\'ve found on my c860 is to do the following :
1. Remove battery and mains power.
2. press D + M keys.Keep them pressed.
3. Re-insert the battery
4. Hold for 2 seconds and the service menus should appear.
5. I think on page 3 you will find the NAND backup option.

Let me know how it goes.

NAND Backup requires CF card...
No apparent need to remove battery to access service menu, just D+M+[on]...

Now I don\'t know, but I\'ve seen comments here that that\'s only true of the older models.

Now how are you doing that differently than I\'m trying it? I\'m looking as it happens at the Qt Applications screen, I press D and hold, press M and hold, press the On button on the back and ... not a thing happens. Do you have yours shut down first? It would certainly make sense to have this sort of menu only at bootup. And removing the battery may be one way to get it to reboot? I\'m only a beginner with this thing (old-timer with Linux).

Hmm ...
Open a terminal.
Code: [Select]
$ su root

# reboot

hold down D+M

and there\'s the service menu!

Ah, it offers to do the NAND backup to the SD card I\'ve got inserted already (a Kingston 256 made in Taiwan). In process....

D+M + the [on] button from a powered off state.

To reboot into normal mode I selected [reset] from the [extra] menu.

This gave me a 128mb image on my CF card.

Before I flash my rom, what else should I back up to be able to restore to the factory rom? I understand Japanese, and would like to have the option to switch back.

So that was a full power down, not just suspend? It would make sense that that, or pulling the battery as folks have been doing, or the \"su root\" then \"reboot\" that I did in a terminal will all have the effect of rebooting the system and letting you get to the ROM - same as it\'s when rebooting that you can get to the BIOS ROM in normal PCs.

From the comments I\'ve seen it looks like the NAND image is all that\'s needed to restore to from-the-factory condition (without, it seems, any changes or new files you\'ve added).

No, just a suspend. Tapped the [on/off] button so it suspended, held down D+M, tapped [on], and I got into the maintanence menu. The only trouble was that everyone tells you how to get into the service menu, but nobody says how to get out of it, or what else it does.

I went to the main page that had the \"Extra\" menu item, that brought up a submenu. In there was an option to \"RESET\". It rebooted, and my data is still here. I don\'t know if that is the recommended way or not, but it worked.

shinRaiden, What model Z do you have? I tried your method on my C860 with no joy.

The NAND backup should be a complete image of the current state of your machine. I have NAND backups in various modes as I use the images to test  installs of suspect software before I install on my working image. I also switch between ROMS by running the appropriate NAND Restore.

To exit the service menu either use a.) The reset option in the extra menu b.) press the power off button or c.) remove the battery and AC.

As mine is no longer doing this, I am suspecting that it requires the original NAND.

Now I found this: Service menus howto

Chugging through NAND restore now...

NAND restore appears to be happy. Clicking reset from the Extra menu does not reboot your Z, do not panic peoples.

Very strange... D+M+on (from suspend) worked everytime prior to my first ROM flash, now it doesn\'t want to repro.

This comment should be pinned. It fills in all the pieces and now things make sense. Thanks.
