I can umount successfully right after mounting it. But after a while, it's getting unmountable.

It _should_ work fine since it's most definitely going to be using seagate's 5gb microdrive (basically a baby hard drive) which they make for compact flash.

I've got a 4gb compact flash microdrive from Hitachi Storage Tech (used to be IBM's storage division) and it works great. I'm not sure which would use more battery power though, usb or CF. Hmm... that's something that would be interesting to find out.

Do you know where to get such a Hitachi microdrive at a fair price online?

I'm in France and they are **so** expansive. I guess I'll order from the US.

Hitachi Microdrive 4Gb
Also you can try www.pricegrabber.com where I found 2Gb for $100 or 6Gb for $240. (Ouch !)

Hey guys just to add a little more info to that last post... The Nano is formatted for pc's so it's fat32. What's really cool is that you can play the mp3's that are on it! Also I just mounted my wife's 4Gb iPod mini, also pc formatted. Both charge off the Z's battery, so be careful how long you keep it attached!

I was going to ask about whether or not the nano/ipod mini charged off the Z's battery. Hmm.. that's unfortunate. I'd really hoped devices like these would be able to be used with their own battery supplying power for the hard drive instead of using up the Z. Oh well.

Oh and a correction to my previous post about the USB hard drive connected to the Z6K. It's actually a 40GB not a 20GB, my mistake I had forgotten that I had partitioned it into two 20GB pieces, one FAT32 and one ext2.

You may need to run the utility that comes with it on a Windows PC first. Someone in my graphic arts class had one of those and the Macs in the lab couldn't recognise it. He took it home and ran the software that came with it, and now it works perfectly.

I've tried to connect 3 different laptop (2.5 inch) drives (one of which a brand new low power device) to my 6k using 2 different usb adapters. None of them get enough power to spin up.
How are you lot managing to connect all this stuff to it?

Also, I tried transferring something like a 10Mb file between an sd card and a 64mb usb memory stick, and it took something like 20 minutes!!!

Any ideas?

Most of the drives we get to work aren't really laptop drives. None of the iPods are laptop drives, they are pcmcia formfactor drives, as is the Seagate one. The mini is cf and the nano is flash. If you have a usb adapter that will plug in you can make a battery pack for it.

I can use one of those 40GB western digital 2.5" portable drives with my 6k only if the usb hub has its own power. Otherwise the disk can't spin up. I now really only use a 1.8" Apricorn drive which does get enough power from the 6k without a powered hub.

I've also had good luck using HD based .mp3 players for external storage, as they tend to have their own power supplies.

My Archos Jukebox studio 20GB ($50 used) was a good bargain, as my SL-C1000 sees it as external storage. They've been going for $70 on ebay if you don't mind retro design and the uncertainty of a used hard drive. 6-15GB models go for even less.

Really wanted one of these:
Rapsody S25 OTG for PSP

But for cost reasons, settled for one of these:
Macally On-The-Go PHR-2500TG

It is a little bit pricey compared to the drive I got off eBay for $5.00 plus shipping, but it has a built-in rechargable battery, so it allows you to connect any 2.5 inch hdd to your Zaurus without needing an externally powered USB hub. Just plug it in and mount the drive. To make things even easier, I have followed eji's instructions from here (from 6000 General discussions >> Mounting Usb Dev On Sl6000l in case link breaks):

and the drive now auto-mounts when I plug it in!! So cool!!!

It has an A/C adapter to charge the battery, and can run for about 2 hours without draining the Z's battery. It comes with a USB cable (mini-B, like the cable that comes with the Z charging dock). If you use the Iriver adapter cable, you can plug it into the Z. Right now, I have an old 6 GB drive (formatted fat32) in it. I plan to install a 40 GB Seagate 5400 rpm drive in it. (This is my spare drive that I use for trying out Linux distros, so I just have to re-format the drive as it has Suse 10.0 on it right now). I will report back results once I install the new drive (probably Monday).
