tkcjabber or Gaim
« Reply #45 on: February 23, 2004, 05:03:59 pm »
I\'ve uninstalled Gaim, and tried the qtjim, but I can\'t figure out how to install or execute the .jar file.

Here is what was ahppening with Gaim, maybe I can go back and try it again if anyone has any idea what I was missing..

# ln -s /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libqte.so.2.3.2 /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0
ln: /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0: File exists
# gaim
gaim: error while loading shared libraries: libopie.so.1: cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory

Thanks,

C

pointydog - I can actually help!

That first statement creates the symbolic link \"/usr/lib/libpng12.so.0\".  either you\'ve already created the symbolic link, or you installed the libpng separately.  Either way, I had the same message, took a backup (always do before applying Tumnus\' zany fixes  ), then did the following as root:

# rm /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0
# ln -s /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libqte.so.2.3.2 /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0
#

There will be no error message, as you delete (rm) the file prior to performing the link.  If you want to first find out if the file is indeed a link, go to the /usr/lib directory and type:

# ls -ll libpng12.so.0

If the symbolic link is already there the output will show the file as a link:

Feb 23 01:22 libpng12.so.0 -] /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libqte.so.2.3.2

At any rate, after deleting it and then recreating it, GAIM should let you fire it up, and will appear to work, but as I stated, I can\'t get it to work correctly for MSN or Yahoo.  Can anyone?

Thanks!
do you know if I should go (re)install all the packages for Gaim before doing that, or after?
I\'ll let you know how I make out, THanks for the help!
(I have to run now, if my dinner gets cold again, I\'ll be in real trouble!)

Well, I didn\'t have to reinstall any in order to get GAIM running after applying the tumnus fix.  I followed the instructions on the GAIM sourceforge site to install the packages and libs, and ended up where if I ran GAIM, the window would pop-up but with no icons whasoever.  I then uninstalled the libpng that I had installed from the GAIM site, did the actions that I just described above, then ran GAIM again and it worked.  However, *worked* is a relative term  :?   I\'m still waiting (and hoping) to here of anybody who has MSN and Yahoo working on the Sharp ROM as desired.

Well, I have a yahoo account, I\'ll try this later (probably tomorrow) and let you know if that part will work.
I dunno about MSN, I think that requires a few other packages and stuff for their security options, and I don\'t have an account with them to try.
I wonder if I should select all the modules, not just the oscar and yahoo ones?
I\'ll try it the short route first, I can always start over again

Hi again n8a.
I\'ve re-installed all, removed the link, then re-added it.
No error message when I added it, but I still get the same error

gaim: error while loading shared libraries: libopie.so.1: cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory

when I look for the association, it\'s there:
bash-2.05$ pwd
/usr/lib
bash-2.05$ ls -ll libpng12.so.0
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root
 34 Feb 24 15:27 libpng12.so.0 -] home/QtPalmtop/lib/libqte.so.2.3.2
bash-2.05$

Before I had deleted all, I was at least getting the window without icons, now it won\'t even start...

any ideas?
THanks again!

BTW-do you know why some of the things in the terminal show up in different colors?

it looks like... there\'s possibly a problem with your libopie?  I have the following libopies installed on my 5500:
libopie (1.5-20020930)
libopie1 (1.0.0-sharprom)

Do you have the same?  What ROM?

The different colors indicate the file types: directories, files, executable files, sym links, etc.

I\'ll have to go look, I\'ll let you know later.
(I have to go work for a few hours)

I have Sharp 3.1 ROM

I figured the colors were different file types, but how to know what\'s what?

Thanks again!

Does gaim run with oz 3.3.6-pre1 with opie or does it require qtopia? If its only qtopia app, does oz have equivalent?

Thanks

Check through this post - airwolf indicated that he had it working with OZ 3.3.5; not sure how well.  Also, it sounds like lardman - an OZ user - has it working to a degree.  So the answer should be yes, but as far as *what* portions of it work, I have only gotten irc to work - I\'ve been trying to get MSN and Yahoo IM working unsuccessfully to date on the latest tkcROM.

Hi again.
I checked over the libraries, and I found libpng12 was not installed, so I installed it (from the Gaim site feed) and now it starts again, but gives me other library errors. I think I amy be close, but...
Any idea where I can find a comprehensive list of libraries?
I\'m on my way to work, I\'ll post the error in case you see something obvious, I\'ll try to have a better look later tonight and see if I can figure out what i\'m missing, exactly.
I also got a file manager program working, that should help me figure out what the heck I\'m looking at!

OK!  So, now it is (correctly) complaining that you have installed the wrong version of libpng (it was compiled with an old version).  This is where the Tumnus fix comes into play.  Now, all you have to do is this:

back it up
uninstall libpng
run at prompt:
# rm /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0
# ln -s /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libqte.so.2.3.2 /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0
#

then click on the gaim icon and you should see the app load with icons and all.

Excellent.
I\'ll give it a try later this morning, let you know how it goes!
I think part of the problem was that I didn\'t uninstall the libpng before I tried the whole thing, I must have somehow missed that part.

Will let you know!
