ROM Recommendation?

Hi all, i have a SL-5000d and i need a new rom for it.  

I've tried all the obvious ones but i cant seem to find one that suits my needs, maybe you guys can recommend one?

I need...

- Media Player  mp3 player
- Web browser
- some way to handle wifi networks
- screen roation
- screen blanking
- more functionality as far as settings go
- easier file handling.

I honestly don't know about the 5000D, I had a 5500 and I think for that type of Zaurus tkcROM won.  It would give you everything you want, it will work smoothly and look fantastic.  I've just (yesterday) installed it on my brother's 5500 and he says it's like a new machine.  IF you can get it for your machine, give it a try.

You'll find it there, you can even move /home to an SD card to free up as much internal space as possible.

Alright im downloading it now, do you know where there are instructions for installing this? is it like the other roms?   do i have to rename the files?

Alright installed and running, here are problems i already have with it.


i cant rotate the screen
no media player at all
no web browser at all
network doesnt stay active when its not connect (shuts the card down when there is no access point) which i dont like becuase sometime i have to search for an access point when i'm at work, etc...  and i cant do that now.

Things i did like
easier interface
easier file management
ability to blank screen
better peripheral management

there should be roation in the qt start menu.  It's not on the fly, but then I don't think any <5600 series does.  The tkcrom is designed to have a small footprint and give you the flexibility to add your choice of software.  You add the media player that you want, the PIMs that you want, the webbrowser.....

OZ3.3.6pre1 gives you on the fly rotation - you click the rotate button and the entire screen rotates pretty much straight away - is that what you mean?

Yeah but sadly OTFR is the only really stable thing you get out of 3.36pre1 at the moment.

I think you have missed something out as all of this should be there, unless the 5000 version is so different from the 5500 version, did you download the applications pack at the top of the page I gave you?

You will find screen rotation, hancom, opera etc all there.  I think proto has dropped off the planet, it doesn't seem like it's developed anymore but IMHO it's the best for 5x00 machines. (Does anyone know what happened there?)

I would NOT advise installing OZ/OPIE at all, unless you want an unstable, experimental and partly working system, that's my view having tried it again and again ad nauseum...

It works fine for me. No instability, some apps need a bit of work to make them work correctly I admit - for example you must make one symlink so that the opera icons show up, but it's worth it for the end result IMHO :-)

Experimental, yes. Some things don't work, probably, but nothing I've encountered bar the IR applet which I tried yesterday.

Yeah what happened to proto? Anyone know? TKC's Shawn is characteristically ignoring questions about the TKC rom and if it has any future.

I know it works for you Simon, but I've just never had a good experience with it. When I had a 5500 I tried this version and that version but they all had major problems, well, I had major problems with it.

I did try the one you recommended on my 860 too, but half the screen didn't work, not a good start really.     Plus I could not find the USB drive feature, critical for me.

BUT on my machine I liked the way everything was scaled and the look of OPIE, it made better use of the high resolution screen real estate than Qtopia seems to.  The aqua-like theme on it blew me away.

However, a problem I had on the 5500 and 860 (I'd suspect djtecthreat would have the same problem on the 5000) is that the apps are unreliable, many seg fault usually when closing, it's like asking me to go back to Windows.

If you could tell me I can install it, get it all working, my USB drive and screen working, ALL my Qtopia apps running with a decent media player that actually works, I'll convert.

It's difficult. It all works pretty much without troubles on my 750, but the other machines (like your 860) may well be different.

USB drive - USB mass storage? I can sort that for you without any troubles if you're interested. I just have two icons in my settings screen, one for mass storage on and the other for networking on. I can provide you with scripts etc. if you want.

I've actually flashed over to the Cacko ROM just to see what everyone else is talking about. It's very nice, very pretty and easy to use, but I do feel that I don't quiote have the flexibility. I'll run with it for a week and see what I think then (hopefully the new pdaXrom will be out and I can try that).
