ogm files in Cacko
« on: August 06, 2004, 07:27:50 pm »
I have been trying to build a good template for DVX for video files for my Zaurus. When I was running the Sharp ROM, I downloaded Kino2 and it played ogm files like a champ. Cacko seems to have more players, but none of them know what to do with an ogm file. Is there an easy way to get that functionality. I have not tried it yet, but I hope it can play an ogg file as all of my audio is in that format. Any assistance is appreciated. I don't think that I can uninstall this version of Kino2 and install the other one. Any ideas. I guess that if I have to, I will encode with some other container, but I will not do the wmv crap. Thanks for any assistance.

Well, I am not doing well. Music  Player and Media Player both will play ogg files. Neither will recognize .m3u playlists. Kino2 will not even play ogg files. It can see them, but won't play them. I installed the vorbis plug-in for mplayer thinking that might fix Kino2, but no joy. So, I tried to install a non-emasculated version of Kino2 with no improvement. So, I uninstalled it and in the process it removed the Kino2 icon and the music note from the Music tab.

I guess that I don't understand the thought process behind having multiple media players installed and still not supporting .m3u playlists. I can sort of understand not supporting ogm as it is not widely used, but it would seem to make more sense to have a single, full-featured media player than multiple ones that still lack some basic support.

I am going to research some other ROMs. If I don't find anything better, I will reflash and reinstall Cacko. I suppose that I will reencode and use an avi container and see how that works.

Well, I am still talking to myself....

I reinstalled Cacko and started trying some different setting to encode my video. I have had some limited success. So far, I have switch to avi containers. I am encoding with xvid (mpeg4) and have tried various settings with ogg, mp3 and AC3 audio, but no joy so far.

Can someone tell me what audio formats the out-of-the-box Cacko ROM video players support? I hope the answer is not the windoze pos. I can't believe that folks who pay a premium price for a Linux-based PDA would be willing to accept a windoze-only encoding method for their video.

Unless someone can point me in the right direction, I guess that I will look for xmms or something else. The lack of feedback and discussion is pretty disappointing.

There aren't that many ROMs out there for the 860. Thanks.

I can play mp3 or ogg voice encoded movie in avi in Kino2.

Are you sure your movie can play in desktop? I use mencoder to encode my movies.

Just to make sure that we are talking about the same thing:

I also could play nearly anything when I was using the latest Kino2 with the Sharp ROM. The Kino2 included with Cacko seems to be missing some codecs and mine will not play ogg files (audio) or ogg audio in my video files. I have not tried MP3.

If you have this working, I would be interested in what bitrates you are using so I can try that.

I am using DVX (avi container, xvid video at 320x240, about 400 bitrate, and have tried various MP3 and Ogg bitrates.) These files play just fine on a variety of other players (zoomplayer, media player classic, etc).

You arent the only one. I had this problem some time ago (not specifically with just ogm files, but with a whole whack of different files) and could not resolve it with the Cacko rom version of kino2 (ver 0.3), so I did a partial revert to 0.22 and everything was back to normal (with even a bit of a plus).

See my previous thread for what I did:

I am using Cacko ROM 1.2.1B. I haven't tried to listen ogg files with kino2. Howwever, I can listen to ogg stream with mplayer in command line mode.

Furthermore, I can view ogm video with kino2. The only problem I encountered is the filename extension. Kino2 does not recongize ogm extension. I have to rename it to avi.

Therefore, I think mplayer in Cacko ROM can play ogg and ogg video.

Can you share what settings you are using to encode your video/audio? Thanks.

I followed your instructions from the previous thread as best I could. The directory structure is not quite the same, but I found the binaries and replaced them. Kino2 still pukes on ogg files, but it played a movie that I had on my CF pretty well. Now if I could only remember how it was encoded. I will fool with it somemore when I get home. Thanks for your help.
