Recommend a Zaurus for me!
« on: August 16, 2004, 01:50:33 pm »
Can you guys tell me which Zaurus you think is best for me?  I've been doing a lot of PDA pondering lately and have convinced myself to stay with Linux on a PDA.  I was considering a Dell Axim, but decided against it (difficult though it was) because I run Linux only at home, and wish to stay that way.  The Linux on Axim project seems to be progressing too slowly for my tastes.

Here's what I need:

802.11b wireless
Web browser
Audio/Video player (standard stuff)
Ability to sync w/Evolution
Calendar / Appointment viewer
Newsreader (something like Pan would be great)

Standard stuff, mostly.  I'd like to be able to play games.  I noticed someone here has been playing Sierra games (via Freesci), which I would also like to do.

I'm trying to decided between a 5600 and C860 from Japan.  If I'm going to spend the $ for something like an SL-6000, I'd just get the C860 from Japan.  I already have a nice laptop, but I don't bring it with me much just because I consider it bulky.  It's mainly for my wife and school, but I'm free to use it during the day.  I guess the C860 is an attraction because it's essentially a mini-laptop.  On the other hand, if I'm going to type a paper or program, I'd certainly use the laptop, so maybe a 5600 would be best.  Decisions, decisions.

Thoughts?

will you be using it outside much?  The clamshells are not very good in sunlight.  I have a 760 and it's not that much of a factor for me as most usage is indoors and cloudy days.

I personally recommend the clamshells because they have the most development happening for them currently.  The keyboard is pretty useful and it is the most asthetically pleasing for wife acceptance factors (you don't mention your wife's technical abilities).

If you don't want to deal with carrying wifi cards, then the 6000 is a good choice.  The screen is better.  The overall size might be a factor in your decision as well as the smaller keyboard.

I also prefer typing in landscape, as opposed to portrait (6000), but there are people that don't mind portrait mode.

woops I forgot to add the 5600.  If you plan to not stray far from the sharp rom, then the 5600 is a good affordable Z.  You don't get 640x480 goodness, so you won't be able to pdaXrom and kdepim may seem a little cramped.  You will get better compatibility with older apps that were made for 320x240 screens.  I still think the clamshell is worth the extra money.

I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

Outdoors is a non-issue for me.  Wife has 0 technical abilities.

I'm leaning towards the C680.  It seems like the way to go if I'm willing to spend an extra few hundred.
