Which Linux system for my Zaurus
« on: September 10, 2004, 09:09:43 pm »
I am starting to use my zaurus SL-5600 agian.  One decion I want to make intelligently is which linux "distro" to use.  I know of two for SL-5600 OpenZaurus and Sharp ROM.  I am wondering if there are any other distros out there in web space for the SL-5600 that others use, and why you like them.  Before I start entering a lot of data into the unit.

Thanks in advance.

OpenZaurus and the Sharp ROM are the main ones.

There are a few others, but all of them are based on the Sharp ROM. OZ is unstable and buggy on the 5600, so I'd personally suggest you go with the Sharp ROM or one of the ROMs based upon it.
Sorry. I just don't have the time...

I have seen two others on the site so far.  The tkcROM witch I have tried both 2.0 alphas  both boot but missing apps.  Right now I am trying tkcROM ver 1.1.  It keeps flashing wait 5,4...1 then going to a graphic.  Next I will try yours Watapon 1.2.  Wondering if there are any others and where I can get them to try them?

You may want to try Zynergy 5600

With the Zaurus DevNet going down, don't expect the tKC ROM to be around for much longer (at least not updates -- I think the ZUG download section has them mirrored). It also hasn't been updated in almost a year now... :-/

The tKC ROM is nice, but as I said, little work is being done on it, as far as I know.

The Zynergy ROM is nice. It's got an annoying bug in the IPK installer, unfortunately. Other than that, it's pretty great (of course you should probably use a different kernel, for the cache bug being turned off). Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be in development either... Correct me if I'm wrong.

The plain Sharp ROM is stable, works well, but is aesthetically unpleasant, and the default kernel has the cache bug workaround on (effectively cutting the CPU speed in half). Unfortunately with Sharp basically dropping US support for the Zaurus, don't expect any updates...

And then there's my Watapon (recently updated to 1.4, with no new updates planned until late December), which is stable (the cache bug workaround is off in it's kernel, but it doesn't cause instability for me), and aesthetically pleasing, at least to me.  There's some screen shots here: http://zaurus.duelmonsters.ca/screenshots/ I haven't noticed a single problem with it, anywhere. Also got a small IPK feed, which I will add applications to upon request. Of course you can take this entire paragraph with a grain of salt, if you wish, since it is my project, so I can't be totally impartial.

All of the above are based on the Sharp ROM.

As I said about OpenZaurus above... OpenZaurus, while very nice, is too unstable for real use on the 5600 currently.
Sorry. I just don't have the time...

I tried Watapon 1.2, but if I remember right some apps where missing.  Tell me more about 1.4 and maybe I'll try that.

It's got everything the Sharp ROM has... except games. And then it has more...

And as I said, feel free to request an application for an IPK, and I'll repack and put it into the feed.
Sorry. I just don't have the time...

Sure, I'll package the games up. Separatly, of course.  Pick and choose what you want.

I'll do it now. It's been on my todo list anyway.

Edit: I added Go now to the feed (it's the simplest one to package... And it was requested...), and will do the others probably tomorrow. It's late here, and I need some sleep. If it doesn't work, blame the lack of sleep, ok?

Just to let people know, OZ 3.5.1 has just came out.  I like it on my SL-5600, and it is stable.  More packages for it are being compiled right now, so I don't have much on my system, but I have the important things.

Interesting thread for a Zaurus newbie with a 5500. Do the asnwers above change becuase of the different model? . I am comfortable using Linux but am not a geek/programmer/guru and prefer to avoid the bleeding edge.

For the most part things stay the same.  Their a few differences, but I beleive those only matter if you get involved in technical things.
