Who has the PIMP'est 5500 setup?
« on: September 29, 2004, 06:13:30 am »
I've had my sl5500 for a few months now, and am really enjoying the overall hackability of this nice little personal portable computer ..

Though I have to admit, the ROM-selection scene means that I'm always fiddling with 'new ROMs' and not really settling on a stable, operational config for my needs.  I guess I'm getting more out of hacking my sl5500 than I am just using it.

So I was wondering .. who has the PIMP'est sl5500 setup?  I mean, what apps have you got, whats the slickest bit about your config, how stable is it, what do you use it for?

Anyone got any creative screenshots they want to share, something drool-inducing and green-tinge making?  Done some private porting work that turns your sl5500 into the veritable "back door key" for hacking?

Lets see some screenshots, people!  C'mon, all you PIMP sl5500 users!  I wanna see the most-loaded sl5500 setups, I wanna drool at other peoples configs, I want screenshots that make me beg for a tarball!

(I don't have any screenshots .. like I said, I'm always futzing around hacking my sl5500 with new ROM's and stuff, I never seem able to settle on a standard, stable config .. I've got an sl5500 with WLAN card, 512meg SD card, and 256Meg CF card, but I'll be damned if I can get it all working right..)

I don't know if it's as cool as all that, but here are a couple of my ports for X/Qt.

Here's NetHack X11 ascii mode using a custom font:

5600 with my rom based on Zyngery ... Stable indeed sir

1.4c Special Jap kernel
overclocked to 471 turbo mode frequency
I use KO/PI for my PIM.. and SSH to transfer info
but on to hacky things..

  - Opie Remote
  - Java Nmap front
  - QT Nmap front
  - zNessus
  - zEthereal (havn't got working iwth linksys CF wifi yet)
  - WellenreiterII (haven't got working with linksys CF yet)
  - Kismet (including a wardriving script so i can run it wihtout typing in my car)
  - SLapASS (iwconfig doens't work with linksys wlan-ng driver)
  - hping2
  - tcpdump
  - macchanger
  - randmac
  - VNC viewer (keypebble)
  - Shorewall   w/ iptables
  - WEP cracking Perl scripts
  - KP/Pi VOiP Phone. (complains about memory, gotta config correctly)
  - ngrep
  - bing (automates network scanning w/ nmap)

Not too shabby. .. Still got alot of work to do, I juts recently got Wellenreiter and zEthereal installed. (I kinda assembled the pieces from tree indexs online.. no ipkg to speak of) They both have the same problem... they don't reconize my linksys wcf11 card. (which is eth0).   Oh well, I'll figure it out one day.
-> pdaXrom beta 3 fixes & feeds
C-1000 + pdaXrom beta3
linksys wifi + expansions

OK  I realise that this thread is old but I am dedicated to keeping the 5500 a viable platform (hmmm... I like that, may have to update my sig) so here's my setup.

5500 ROM: Cacko 64-0
All user storage on 256MB SD card
-I have yet to use a large portion of this, still below 40MB

Apps:
Opera 7.3
PetitTrack(I fly satellites for a living, so just a neat little app to show off)
Qplot
QPSword
   -NKJV
   -RSV
-more than I can really remember
TKCeditor
zReader
QPOSE(slow as crap but it works)
PDF viewer
Wellenreiter
Apache/PhP/SQL
Perl (for PHP/SQL scripting)
USB Storage
Cool Icons
zBlue theme
zCrystalBlue theme
sudo

Games:
 Aliens
 Froot
 reversi
 zBattleship
 zKnights
 zD20Dice(cheaper than buying real dice)
frotz(command line, but I can play infocom stuff again)

I am currently in a course for Java, so as I progress I may reinstall Jeode, so I can play some more on the Z.

Yea, it stinnks not being clamshell, and no usb host is a drawback, but this little guy has lots of life left in it. I may have to buy a spare for experimentation(or just to have in case this little guy dies ...heaven forbid...)

I'll post screenies when I get home.

so far, these are all interesting systems, but i see nothing really 'pimp' about them.  i was hoping to discover there were sl5500 hackers out there making their systems do -amazing- things, but i guess its just a normal little linux box, after all, doing all the normal little linux things that linux can do.

so, c'mon folks, show up the PIMP!!!

The thing is, normal little linux doing what normal little linux can do IS pimp. Linux can do anything. Out of the box the zaurus didn't do anything that the previous posters have done, No other PDA can even attempt half of it. And we continue to find new things we can do.

THAT is the beauty, nothing radical, but progressive improvement here and there is what keeps our aging 5000/5500 platforms as usable and satisfying as the new 1k/3k.

That being said, what were you really expecting? In my book, revamping the memory management for nearly unlimited user storage, server management, automated downloading of news doc for the day all look like -amazing- things to me.

well, true enough, it is bloody nice having what i would've considered a very nice workstation, in the 80's, now in my pocket.

what i really mean by 'pimp', however, is .. those extra 'neat' flourishes that just edge things over a bit.  not just 'distro-X, just built', but 'distro-X, PIMPED'.

PIIIIMPPED, i mean.  not scientific fact and technologically wonderous prowess.  PIIIIIIIMMPPP!!!!

Must you continue to use such a crude expression that promotes the demeaning of women?
