Zaurus Network Name
« on: October 29, 2004, 10:43:02 am »
Hello,

How do I setup Z's Network Name please ?

I'd like to restrict the access to my wireless router only for my laptop and Z,

the router doesn't accept Z's default empty network name.

Thanks
Bo.

Bo,

If by "network name" you mean the string that is passed to the DHCP server when getting an IP address. I don't know. I haven't been able to suceed in that.

But that is really a weak security method (assuing this is what you mean) anyway.

A better security method would be to have your router restrict clients by ethernet MAC address. Yes this too can be faked, but it adds another layer. This is the method I use.

Finally you will want to be running WEP or WPA on the wireless side.

I hope this helps,

Don't know if it addresses your security issue, but see my post here for info on setting the Zaurus host name:

Thanks, Craig !

I also use the MAC filtering as well, but the router doesn't accept MAC fiters with empty names.

Bo,

Sounds like you need a _new_ router ;-)

OK, I found the answer! You need a terminal window (or I used one anyway).

As root, cd to /etc/pcmcia

Edit the file network.opts (I used vi)

You will see a heading for each of your configured network settings which start with, for example:
   qpelan0*,*,*,*)

In that "section" look for the parameter:
   DHCP_HOSTNAME=

Just put in your host name there (no spaces) after the equal sign, save the file and connect!

I just tried it, and it works great!

I hope it works for you too.
