Are you running pdaXrom and for what?
« Reply #30 on: December 08, 2004, 07:27:20 pm »
Currently using C860 for:
- checking email (sylpheed-claws)
- browsing internet (firefox)
- watching pictures (GQview)
- listening to mp3 (xmms)
- remote terminal (SSH)

Things that don't work but should
- PDA: address book synchronized with desktop (ka/pi)
- PDA: calendar/todo synchronized with desktop (ko/pi)
- WiFi AP locator (Kismet - stops gathering packets after a few seconds)

On the todo list:
- listen streaming radio (mplayer?)
- watch streaming video (vlc 0.8 - watch tv and mythtv recordings)
- IM: msn, icq, jabber
- remote desktop (both ways) ?
- remote control ?
- ... much much more .. later on

Wait a minute, how are you listening to shoutcast streams?
My thoughts exactly - I even started a thread about this!
A small workaround for this is to use mplayer..

1. wget the playlist file to disk (mplayer in pdaXrom can't retrieve it from the net):

bash-3.00# wget http://www.di.fm/mp3/trance96k.pls

2. cat the file and find the shoutcast server url (the part you want is in bold):

bash-3.00# cat trance96k.pls
[playlist]
NumberOfEntries=3
File1=http://64.236.34.67:80/stream/1003
Title1=D I G I T A L L Y - I M P O R T E D - Trance channel! (US Ultravox)
Length1=-1
File2=

3. open the server url with mplayer:

bash-3.00# mplayer http://64.236.34.67:80/stream/1003

4. To adjust the volume just run XMMS and even in stop mode it adjusts the volume fine..

Hope this helps

(btw that stream is www.di.fm 's main trance stream, great stuff)
I have not try'ed it on the Z but normally you can use mplayer with playlist..
In the example given try :

mplayer -playlist http://www.di.fm/mp3/trance96k.pls

Probably one want  to set the cache parameter also because the default mplayer seems high and it take some time to fill it up.

I'm not using pdaXrom at the moment, but really want to, ever since I happened upon the desktop screenshot thread and ran into limitations as to what I could do with the sharp roms (anyone know about mapserver here?)

I tried though, on my 750, loved it, but basically ran out of space for the apps that I needed on there (apache2, php5, mysql). Now, before everyone tells me about all the great things I can do installing stuff onto sd card etc, I figured I'm too new to linux to really get into the different types of formatting that I would need (it's all windoze boxes where I come from), and I use my zaurus too much every day to go without these things for the time it would take me to learn how to do it all and clear up the inevitable bugs/glitches/screw ups on my part.

So, now the prices are coming down for 860s, I'll probably get one of them and put pdaXrom on that, as it looks the business!

You don't need to go deep into it. It's far more easier to format a card than it is to run apache php and mysql! (though you can probably find these with other roms as nothing is related to X)

Just follow blindly type what's written under "To format an SD/MMC card" as ext2 on this howo for newbie  howto

If you fear to loose your sd card,  use the method described by richardh on this thread

If you have a problem, just get back here :-)

Currently using pdaxrom as laptop replacement...

Wishing for LDAP on Ka/Pi, Love syncing Ko/Pi with Korganizer, hoping for some slicker wifi utilities. Maybe I'm not using enough of the right tools, but after installing a bunch of stuff (ethereal, kismet, etc) my feeling is there is still too much typing involved in discovering/connecting to hotspots. Seems like something everyone wants to do as soon as they have a wifi card...IMHO it should be presumed that everyone wants to use kismet, ethereal, and ettercap, and have auto-connect capability for any auto-found hotspots...

Thanks for the incredible work, btw!
There is nothing close to pdaxrom afaik

I'm planning to move over to kolab2 once it's released, so a pdaXrom version of Kontact is high on my wishlist.

I use it as my mini laptop.
*Browse the web
*VNC into my MythTV computer and use it as a remote
*Writing in my journal
*Play with web design
*Slowly learning to program
*Ssh into my desktop
*Listen to music

When I'm going on a trip I'll put a couple tv shows on a CF card and bring them with, but I don't do that on a normal basis.
