WIFI Harddrives
« on: November 04, 2004, 06:36:57 am »
This was something i read about over two years ago... Asus were preparing a WIFI 2.5HDD case.

Has anyone done a system using one of these types of enclosures?

http://www.xpcgear.com/asuswlhdd2us.html

...  there's probably a battery powered one around, or a external battery brick - etc.  It's a helluva lot cheaper than a usb host card + usb 2.5 hdd shell....

Apart from that you don't need the usb host card as Ps/2 External keyboard (and mouse?) can be connected to the zaurus serial port via a simple enough PIC microcontroller... I have yet to build this, but it's on the net.

So, keeping in mind i have a 256meg sd and a 1gig CF - which wifi card would you get?  I know that there's only SDIO wifi card coming onto the market, and it's still not even a possibility for pdaxrom for now at least.   Would the sdio be faster?

Anyhow what CF wifi cards are recommended by people using PDAXROM (would still kinda like to have cacko possibilities)...
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

I'm not sure about the product from Asus, but last I checked, the NetDisk "NAS" products require proprietary software to work. They only allow so many people to use the drive at once, and it's designed to show up on your (Windows) computer as a regular drive.

Here's a review from Tom's hardware.

The Asus is a Samba box.  If you read between the lines,  you'll see that it's also a Linux-based gadget (it uses ext2 filesystems,  and the same Broadcom CPU that's in the Linksys WRT54G).  Too bad it's only got 4M of flash:  it might be cool to hack it into an Ogg server.  But the USB host might make it possible to do a "pivot root" trick like the PocketWorkstation ROM to add features.

HI everybody,

I own one since some days ... with 60 GB HD 2.5" ... it was a great deal ... long thinking about a usb host cf card but 160 EURO is too much ... asus wl-hdd2.5 for about 80 EURO without harddrive ...

.. connection via ethernet connection (using lan cf card) ... used as massstorage / shared samba resource / Accesspoint (with dhcp for network) ...

... connected via wifi as mass storage sharing samba resource ... (maybe in future as nfs drive?) ...

... now I have all my mp3 withme and have storage for

... it has a usb host cf (like usb-on-the-go) connectig massstorage copying files automatic) ... maybe cameras directly or via cardreader ...

... and OPEN SOURCE ... I think there is sourcecode available on asus.com ... I send a question to asus about it waiting for response ...

While googling around I discovered that:

Asus does have a source tarball on their website,

There are already a couple of hackers releasing alternative firmware ,  and

The USB port is only 1.1,  so external drives would be even slower than the so-so internal speed.
