dhcpcd versus wireless router SMC2804WBRP-G

I have been trying for several hours to get my shiny new SL6000L to pick up an
IP address from my SMC wireless router. If I manually set the IP address
then the wlan0 interface seems to work fine.
My router logs show an offer being sent, and record the lease as granted. Mind you,
the router could be being optimistic.

dhcpcd just seems to time out, no matter what I set the timeout to. Invoking from
the network interface front end or from the command line does not seem to make a difference.

Is a package for dhclient available for the Sharp ROM?  I guess I wouldn't mind
changing ROMs eventually, but it all seems a bit alpha-test at the moment.

You might want to run TCPDUMP in a terminal window while you are trying to connect to your network, and then you will see what is happening from the Zaurus point of view.

I have a SL-6000 and it does DHCP just fine across my wireless network.

Thanks for the tcpdump suggestion (by the way, I am working around the problem
by using a fixed IP address, which is fine for my home net.)

On the Z, I cannot see any dhcp replies. On the thinkpad next to it, I see lots
of "You IP address is xxxx" packets from the router. So maybe it is an antenna question, I think to myself.  But no, I place the Z right beside the router with the same (lack of)
results.


I wonder if this is related to another networking issue I noticed:

I attach the Z to the wireless network, and everything seems to be ok. I can connect to google, and the other machines on the wireless lan.   Now I try and ssh to the Z.
TCP dump shows lots ARP who-has packets trying to find a MAC address corresponding to the IP, but no response.  If I ping my thinkpad from the Z, then ARP starts working, and the thinkpad can route to the Z.

It seems like there is maybe some software issue with ARP and the Sharp ROM?  

The weird thing is that dhcp works at my office.  

The other thing I wondered is if it has to with the fact that the home wlan is using
192.168.2.xx?  But this is a different class C than the Z's PC-link, so I don't really see how.

Can't explain it. I do have a couple of ideas.

It would appear that there is a difference in the DHCP server on your wireless AP, and the one you have at work. Perhaps you could run a different DHCP server at home (one that is in a PC, or Linux box).

As to the ARP issue. I am running 3.10 on my old SL5500, which has been running continuously for the past 206 days (using a d-link wireless card) and it has no such problems.

Perhaps it is the driver associated with your wireless card. I am using a DCF-550W in my SL-5500.

The IP addressing shouldn't be an issue. I use 10.x.x.x at home, and it works just fine.
