New SL-6000
« on: November 16, 2004, 03:07:06 pm »
Hi people!
I am a new user of zaurus SL-6000, and new in the world of PDA's.I am in Europe, and as i know, this model is not released here and will never be.
It is an amazing device, and i guess capable of many things.I got the device 2 weeks ago and i was happy with it, but then i found out that there isn't much of compatible software for it.I don't have any idea of linux programing and i don't want to deal with the terminal thing... The hardware is terrific, but the software...
is not friendly to a new ignorant user. The palm os and the ppc os have a lot of software developed and somebody can buy whatever he/she wants why? Linux is not good enough for the developers?
So why someone should prefer SL-6000 instead of palm or ppc?
Most of the older applications from previous models don't work, in contrast to the other operating systems... If i knew before...
I have a chance to sell it in the price i bought it, to swift to the Ipaq 4705.But i really like the zaurus hardware! What do you advice me to do?
I was wondering if is it possible to flash the zaurus to use palm os, or windows mobile ppc? or at least to make the programs available on the other os, to work with linux?
If you would like, please post some links.
Forgive my ignorance, i suppose it's an expert forrum here, everything i read looks like chinese for me,but remember you were also newbie once.

Please i really need some help here, i would appreciate it.

                                              Thank's in advance

Well, there is quite a lot of software, since with some work you can run
all of debian linux (something like 10000 packages).  I think the general question of whether you will be happy with your Zaurus is a bit hard to answer.  I'd be inclined to say that if you are not interested learning about Linux, then you should probably trade for something else.  If you can list some specific tasks you want to accomplish, then people might be able to tell you if there is Z software to do it; if not, then I think your choice is clear.

Owning a Z is a bit like working on a Hot-Rod (I have no idea what the euro
equivalent is, and I just spent almost two years in Munich). You can expect to
spend a lot of weekends on the project, but at the end you will have something to impress your friends.  If you still have any friends :-).

I like it so i'll keep it  .I will be joining the battle...  *hoping to win the war!*
Could you be so kind to reply me on a  newbie question?
What rom should i use to flash my SL-6000?
*i have the 1.12 version*
where from? link?
from the many programs i tried, only few are running on SL-6000 without adjustments   Is this going to change by time after new software development?
somebody knows how to put maps for the qpeGPS? and where to download from?
In some applications there is an option "execute with root privilege (not secure)" What it means and what is it about?

Thank's in advance
