Wifi Woes On C860 W/cacko 1.21b
« on: November 22, 2004, 01:34:02 pm »
Strange problem.  Pretec wifi card.  I can access the net just fine at my job - straight up through DHCP and automatic SSID.  D-Link router.

At home - Linksys router - I cannot, for the life of me, get online.  I've tried everything - DHCP/No-Dhcp (static), manually setting ssid, different channels, etc.  With Static it fires up, but I can't communicate with my network.  I guess the network comes up simply because it is static.  With automatic, it never is able to get up and get an IP.

I know my home router is okay.  I have a laptop at home that gets on just fine - dynamic or static IP.  I know the WLAN card is okay, since it works at my job.  I actually had Pretec replace the card, on the off chance it was the card, but it wasn't.  I know my Zaurus is okay as well.  The only conclusions I can come up with is a compatibility issue with the card and my router.

At home I am in an apartment complex and I know there is at least one other apartment with a router.  But that shouldn't cause a problem if I manually set ssid and tried different channels, right?

I'm a tech and believe I've run through all the basics.  I've setup dozens of wifi setups and am very confident I'm not missing something obvious.

Any thoughts?

Did you try tearing down all security and connecting, and then building your security up piece by piece?

I find at home I have to set up WEP Encryption, but NOT authentication. Otherwise it won't work.

The downside is that ANYONE can get onto my network (if they spoof their MAC address since I filter MAC addresses), but they cannot pass any traffic until they get the right WEP key.
