Tree!explorer
« on: November 26, 2004, 01:19:00 pm »
I've got Tree!Explorer on my C860, and the menu for files doesn't seem to be working as it should.  When I tap-and-hold on a file, the menu appears.  If I select 'open', I get the Properties popup instead.  If I select 'open with', nothing seems to happen.  If I select 'send to', the submenu just has a couple greyed-out items.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Also, I've tried editing the treeexplorer.conf file to add to the sendto menu:
[sendto]
item0=/home/QtPalmtop/bin/zeditor
...

but that seems to have no effect on the sendto menu, even after restarting Tree!Explorer?!?!

I've posted a note on the author's site, but I thought I'd seek to collected wisdom of y'all as well.

To edit the Send To menu, select Favorites, and choose Edit Favorites.
Select the Send To tab.

You have to register it in order for Send To, and some other things to work.
This is a great file manager. I use it all the time. It is well worth registering.
The zip download has a readme file in it that is informative.

I was afraid I needed the plus version to use the SendTo, but it's odd that the author's web site doesn't seem to say so.

It still leaves the question of why Open and OpenWith are not working, though...

There is a Tree!Explorer link in the top left-hand corner of the webpage.
There are two pages, one for freeware version, one for shareware version.
That link will switch you to the other page.
Between these two pages, you should get the info you are loooking for.

As for Open, it opens a file using that file's default MIME type program (.txt uses TextEditor, html uses Opera) etc. You can also double-tap on the file.
I don't use Open With, so I can't help you there.

Hmmm, yes.  The Plus page does indeed say SendTo is added in that version.  Interestingly, further down the page it says that before registration, "Cannot send files to other applications".  That may well account for the  Open and OpenWith problems as well.

Yes, I'm aware of the MIME types.  I've edited the textedit.desktop and zeditor.desktop files to switch to the latter for text files, which duly changed the icon next to Open.  But Open did not work either before or after that change.

Just a trick or two that I had not noticed mentioned elsewhere.

When a file is selected, instead of holding down the stylus & waiting for the menu to pop up, you can press the right arrow key to get the same menu.

The left arrow key acts as an "up" key within the directory structure, also.

Send To works fine. I don't use Open With. If there is no default Open, then the Properties box appears.

Could not use the C860 half as easily without Tree Explorer & Tree Text!!

Version 1.69 beta just came out.
It has 'drag and drop' from files window to tree window.
Also has 'Send To' a linux command (I don't quite understand this one).

It uses the filename as an argument to a CLI command.
A good example is if you want to make an archive from a directory using tar, etc.

Can someone provide linux commands we can had in Tree!explorer ?
For example zip, unzip, tar, gzip, gunzip, create tar.gz, compare would be very useful and handy.
