*good* Serial Cable For Server Admin?
« on: December 03, 2004, 03:44:23 pm »
I would like a good serial adapter for admin duties.  The usual type of equipment will be accessed (sun, cisco.....)

I think I waited too long as aircable's website does not allow me to buy the BT part of the serial connection.  the zthin seems to be sold out on the 4' and 6' cables.  I need it long enough to be in front of the cabinet while plugged into the back.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

I have both the Serialio and Aircable.  Both work well.  I prefer the Aircable however.  I have tested the Aircable DB9 adapter with both the Zaurus Aircable BT serial adapter and a Zaurus BT CF card (Blue Monkey).

If you cannot get the Zaurus Aircable BT adapter that connects to the Z serial port, but still want a wireless serial solution consider a BT CF card and the Aircable DB9.  Use ircomm to bind (as documented in the book Linux Unwired).  I also had to remove 'sniff' from the list of link policies in hcid.conf to correct latency and connect issues.

Newer notebooks also lack a serial port, but many have BT.  The Aircable works well with Windows/XP and BT.

My only issue with wireless serial using BT is that multiple products including Aircable claim to support power from pin 9, however not a single machine/switch/terminal server in my lab supplies any power on pin 9, and who wants to drag a power supply around?  Fortunately the Aircable has a 4-10 V tolerance, so a rubber band attached 9V battery works great (I tested a Lion 9V battery for duration and was able to stream at 9600 bps for 48 hours).  I also built a USB to power adapter plug for the Aircable.  Coincidentally it also works to charge my Jabra BT headset.

Another potential problem in the data center is the possibility of closed racks with EMI/RFI shielding.  When I Aircable a Cisco I am usually in the back of the rack with the Cisco (line of sight), or I put the Aircable on the top of the rack (Cisco serial cables are usually long).  I have stood 10m away with no problems.

If you choose to use Aircable DB9 this script (http://sense.net/~egan/aircable) may be useful to you to switch modes.  I use this script on my Z (you will need to install Expect and Kermit) with my Serialio cable.

Usage:

aircable settings
aircable mode service (serial service mode, for use with Z CF BT card, Bluez, Windows XP, etc...)
aircable mode cable (default mode, for use with other aircable products)

Serial is great, I hope it lasts for ever, and Serial/BT even better.

Thank you both for your answers.  Yes Ideally the aircable BT and db9 combo is what I would like to use.  It seems more intuitive to be wireless with a handheld.  Most of the time I will be using it, the racks will be open and I will be within 5 meters.  The power supply issues and solutions are something to consider, but I think I can live with that.

ahh yes, those are the stock sharp cables.  I believe they don't fit the clamshells properly or don't allow the 5 series/ 6000 to access the keyboard.  I forgot which one

I am guessing no one has found anyone selling the AIRcable module for the Zaurus.  I have found one place in Europe, Xtops but I have not found anywhere in the US.  Does anyone else make something like this so I can still uses my cf card or will I have to get a sled?

Does the AIRcable CellConnect version of the adapter work with things other than phones?

Can you open the keyboard with it plugged in?

It's supposed to work with other Aircable modules.  Beyond that,  I don't know:  I wound up not buying one because of the lack of info.

iirc,  one of the selling points was,  in fact,  that you can get to the keyboard with it installed.
