Zaurus Musicians
« on: December 08, 2004, 08:14:20 pm »
Hello All,

I'm in the market to get a pda, been eyeing the SL-6000, that I can create tunes with, thinking more the lines of sequencing my own samples and general sound editing. Any Zaurus musicians on these boards have experience loading apps (ie. Ardour, Trackers) and if so which ones do you find work on this portable scale?

Also how is the mic sound quality on the different zaurus? This probably won't be an issue since I'll be recording most of the samples in the studio, but maybe for field recordings of machinary, animals, neighbors having sex...

Peace Out!

I'd like to see someone adding Qt 2.x support to CheeseTracker, a nice ImpulseTracker clone.

Yeah Impulse Tracker is a fun lite app. what's Qt 2.x is that the abreviation for the desktop Qtopia?

I have a few tracks I did in Impulse Tracker at www.c1t1zen.com/puter
Enjoy.

Can anyone fill me in on the mic (mono) quality? 16bit 44.1khz?

I started that a while ago with the Embedix toolchain, but stopped when some math stuff didn't work (compiling my current tree stops with "implicit declaration of function `int lrintf(...)'"). And aside from the missing math stuff, it's probably slow because of floats...

Cool, now that OZ has more than 1000% floating point performance compared to the SharpROM this may be turn out to be usable. Can you post your patch anywhere, please?

Well, what I meant with "stopped when some math stuff didn't work" was that it didn't compile with the Embedix toolchain because of missing lrintf etc. I haven't touched anything with Qt yet...

I've just found and compiled FunktrackerGOLD. It was originally a DOS-based tracker, but converted to Linux.

I've tried to load the example files and it doesn't work. I'll have a look at it later. For now though. I've placed it here. Just copy it to the Zaurus and run it via a terminal.

What I *really* would love to see is Rosegarden, MuSE, or seq24 working on the Zaurus. I am thinking though processing power wise you can't do that much, but at least seq24 (MIDI only) should be possible. Unfortunately QTopia doesn't support ALSA as far as I know.

CSound has been compiled for the Zaurus, at least.

I was thinking of building a simple phrase sampler for the Zaurus (e.g. tap on an icon and it plays an assigned wave file; maybe even record too). Probably a good easy project that I can learn Python on, once I finish up with my Windows MP3 stream ripping project.

I've written a multi-track playback mechanism, No GUI for it or anything at the moment, but everything streams very nicely. It supports a block-based audio data approach, like on most digital recorders, so you'll be able to drag around music sections and the like. I'll be adding recording capability to it at some point, and eventually get round to doing a GUI for it. I haven't managed to do any QT stuff yet though.

I was thinking of turning it into a tracker, but that would mean adding sample rate conversion which is not necessary for multi-track recording. Also, everything streams from disk at the moment and a memory-based approach is better for trackers. I'll think about it.

Hmmm....

Interested in hearing how that project turns out...

Soundwave106 I like the idea of an icon based phrase sampler! The touchscreen is begging for use in an audio editor. Where you could draw and sketch out sound ideas like filters and effects.

How about Csound is it possible to install a GUI for Csound I read something about Cecilia? I understand the VGA setting in the Sl-6000 causes a lot of porting issues.

Yeah, most of the GUIs that I know of for CSound would have to be heavily ported. Qtopia is way different than most of the standard Linux GUIs, so it seems.

I'm not the best Linux C guru, unfortunately. I wouldn't mind seeing CSound GUIs ported, that would be pretty cool.

I got my sl-6000 now
So Far:
Installed Csound, and Gaim (with help from these forums)
still trying to get xmms installed (Glib errors can't allocate 529mb) but that's for another thread.

Downloaded the FunkTrackerGOLD, any one have success with this? I don't even know really where to start. read the readme... seems like a few library's are needed that aren't in the package from that site. I'll look more into it, report back. But if anyones got a start on it let me know.

Any scripts out there I can borrow from you guys, like the multiple files playing simultaniously?

Also one last question should I jump into OZ for more music app options? don't really use the PIM functions.

csound HELP

I'm getting (csound tidy up segmentation fault) when I try to run csound, downloaded a few example .sco .orc files from the csound site.

EDIT: I just reinstalled it seems to work now.
