Hi,

I am pretty close to SOLD on one of these C3000s. I am very interested in it for a linux machine so I can play a bit. Plus the Gadget factor, I can't discount it.

I am wondering about practical reasons for owning one though. I work as a roving tech support person supporting Windows machines and networks. Using this device -- indeed, using any Linux-based device -- what are some practical ways in my line of work that I can use the 3000.

Are there CF WLAN and LAN cards that work with it? (I see notes about WLAN cards, but not LAN cards.)

I don't have a C3000, but I don't see why it wouldn't work with CF Ethernet cards. I have one (very old, not sure who made it) that works great in the original dev unit.

I use a Socket LAN Card in my 3k and It works great

Though I haven't seen reports specifically for the 3000, all Zs can use a serial cable to interface cisco and other various equipment. I also have the socket ethernet card as well as the socket wifi. I use rdesktop to log into windows servers and qkonsole to log into unix servers all the time. I also keep passwords encrypted and inventories on spreadsheets and portabase. I think there are people even trying to hook up cdrom/dvdrom drives. If so, you could even read cdrom manuals.

Admittedly, this is probably a more "what can I do with linux and this level of portability" question than a "what can this particular linux device do for me" question.

I notice that the Socket is a 10M card. Are there any 10/100M CF cards?

Do these cards work out of the box? Or do other things need to be done...?

Another thought: I am seriously considering putting Debian on it. Does that change the dynamics of this discussion?

There are 10/100 CF ethernet cards available but given the likely use and the power of the C3k I highly doubt you'll ever need more than 10MB. Many cards do work out of the box, but keep your receipt handy if you find one that doesn't and nobody has found a solution for it. As for Debian, I haven't used it so I couldn't tell you one way or the other.

there is also a 10/100Mps Card from Socket witch sould work

I also found this nice List of what Socket Products work on the Z and how to get them running
