General Discussion / Psp Power Brick!
« on: April 10, 2006, 11:58:43 pm »
Until I find an acceptable alternative, I'm keeping mine. The first PB I bought went up in smoke (literally). I took it back to Best Buy and the clerk could smell the plastic burning odor even after I carefully put it back in the bubble pack. It was working fine until I decided to test out to see if it would charge and re-charge simultaneously... then poof!  The next one I bought, I have not done that with and am still using it frequently without problems. I won't be leaving it unattended while charging though. Hopefully it doesn't explode on me.   Thanks for the heads up! I noticed it gets a little warm when charging my 5500 but not too bad. I can't seem to find too many alternatives above 3600mah. Here is one:

6000mah $49.95 USD; confirmed to work with Zaurus:
http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=...oducts_id=8236&

Très expensive for a battery, no? I'd kind of like the Pelican all-in-one case which might work for the Z and possibly the car charger if it works.

Deals and Great Z Buys / Battery Ea-bl08 For $15

I would caution anyone considering buying these batteries.  I had bought three and had to return all three because they did not hold a charge.  I have since gotten the second batch from the company and they are still bad.    It wouldn't charge inside my zaurus (flashing light) or through the external charger.  I'll be calling to request a full refund because I don't want to go through a third batch.

I bought two BLO6 batteries two weeks ago from laptops4less for my 5500. Do not hold charge very long.  I was thinking maybe I just need to charge them regularly and they will get better, but two weeks of charges and they still run down quicker than the original.  I guess it's a hit or miss thing.

Maybe it's because I've had a long day but I can't seem to find an xtra folder on zaurusthemes. Can u throw up the link?

Thanks.

I find myself tired of the default Kismet_qt icon. Is anyone using a replacement? I made a replacement which is OK but wondering if there is something better.

Thanks.

General Discussion / New 90nm Arm9 Chip
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:00:30 pm »
It doesn't look like it's targeted for PDA use. It's a bit depressing as Linux PDA news has is all but dead except for occasional N770 blurbs. Linux Dev sometimes features an exciting phone but it's usually exclusively for European or Asian markets (mostly Chinese). I hate our paranoid U.S. celluar carriers and the FCC. At least it looks like we are finally getting 3G phones after years of lagging behind the rest of the entire freaking planet. Except, of course, it's at oddball 1900 mhz so we still won't get the cool Linux phones that everyone else has. At least the Linux market has been very good for set top boxes.

To me, the Zaurus 5500 should be more like what you should be looking for in a budget priced linux PDA -- 64 MB ram (with root on SD card) and with built-in keyboard -- maybe you should buy up and refurbish and warrantee SL5500s?

Handheld Linux already sells the 5500G. Geeks.com is also selling refurbished 5500's for $164.50 USD.

I wish more choices were available for Linux friendly stores to carry. Why not approach Unication about their new Magpie PDA? It has quite a few nice features for a low-end PDA. Price would need to be less than a C1000.  According to BargainPDA they are looking for resellers. http://www.uni.com.tw/magpie_pda.html

The Magpie seems to have gotten a lot of media attention for its VOIP capabilities, so it might be worthwhile to inquire.

General Discussion / New Linux Clamshell Device?
« on: June 07, 2005, 10:13:03 pm »
I was a little miffed that they labeled this a smart phone just because it has software VOIP, but apparently wi-fi phones are the Next Big Thing® and this company is just trying to cash in on the trend.  I can't imagine having to drive to Panera bread just to make a phone call but I guess this would be enticing in small countries where signal is omnipresent or within a corporate environment.

The magpie is a cheap looking plasticy thing. The way some of the keys are sunken in, I hope this is just an early prototype. The screen isn't so hot but I wouldn't expect Sharp to license their VGA kit to a company that fingered their case design. The site is very detail thin. I would like to know what GUI that is. It looks like an uglified Qt. The games are qt.  None of the reference boards I googled support CF for this chip so that's probably why they left it out: http://www.arm.co.kr/solution/1__s07.php.

Bargain PDA has another new Linux wi-fi "phone" listed on their site. This one is in true phone format though:

http://www.bargainpda.com/default.asp?newsID=2546

I expect we'll be seeing a slew of these things soon. At least for the Asian market. One good thing about this trend is it may force Sharp to include wi-fi in upcoming models.

General Discussion / Nokia 770 Internet Tablet
« on: June 07, 2005, 08:57:12 pm »
Linux Journal recently conducted a brief interview with a Nokia representative about the 770. Doesn't say much new but gives a little insight into why they didn't add GSM/tri-band to the device and most likely won't for future variants:

http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8351

A little slapdown from Nokia on commercial distros, stating they "need work" and calling them "middle men".

"For a device such as the 770, one is concerned with the input and the output. The output is beautiful. We have the challenge to improve the input."

Umm, integrate a keyboard?

The only real thing missing from SL-C3000 is high resolution VGA/DVI-output. This could bring palmtops to the masses.

It's my dream to be able to have a PDA the size of the 3000 or 5500 with XGA-out that I could just pop into a docking station and light up a full-sized monitor and peripherals with the press of a button. The dock would need an integrated USB hub/port replicator for devices. Check my e-mail. Do some surfing. When I'm done, pop out the PDA, stick it in my pocket & take it on the road.

Almost every app i use at work is web-based so a PDA like above would be almost doable as a workstation replacement. The only problem would be intensive video, audio and large files. Maybe 5 years out it we'll see these kind of devices.

The problem with OQO and other devices like that is that they are x86. That implies energy deficiency and low battery life.

I was going to say the newer x86 chips might change that perception but looks like the Pentium M at 600mhz consumes 6 watts versus the Xscale which runs the same speed at a little less than a watt. Possibly the new via C7 if underclocked to that speed might do better as it runs 3.5W at 1Ghz and idles at .1 watts. It would be nice to clock up to 2GHz on full power.

19 days left for the nice surprise
///TRIsoft

Are we talking about a Zaurus? I expected something in the fall but I'm not complaining if they are announcing sooner.    By the way, 2005 was supposed to be the year of the linux phone. It's now JUNE and we've seen barely a trickle of new devices out.

I agree with Kahm on this one. What is the market for this thing? Who are you selling to? Most people on this board spend more to get more and are not interested in low end. They want a palm-sized laptop. Are we talking about the Asia market only? It won't sell anywhere else. Joe Euro/American won't want this because he could have PPC for the same price and could give a rat's dingy about it being proprietary. He would rather have a smartphone anyway. What if Sharp adds wi-fi to the C4000 or C2000 this fall? A wi-fi C2K at 1/3rd more would make this device look kind of redundant. I expect new Linux phones will be coming out to the Asian market later this year that will have approximately the same features as this device (though they may be more expensive).

For the original estimate of 2/3 the cost of a CL1000, personally I'd rather spend an extra 1/3 and get a CL1000. The addition of Wifi or Bluetooth aren't compelling enough for me to go with a lower resolution display, no USB host, and it didn't seem like a built-in keyboard.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=80589\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Lower resolution display. Slower processor. No CF slot, only SD with no hope for SDIO. No keyboard. No USB host.

I'm afraid you've lost me here. Does it at least have IR? The *only* thing that I can think of that would make this worth buying is a 100% open software, and I'm not fanatic enough to buy it for that. It's basically a Palm 505 running linux.

I'm not going to vote either way for BT or WiFi. I'd want WiFi, but BT makes more sense for the main market in Asia. How practical is it to do two models, one with BT, one with WiFi? You probably won't get a consesus on one or the other.

Imagine where Microsoft would be today if they would have taken that attitude with Windows 3.0. You can buy a laptop with a real keyboard and tons more features for 850 USD. Lots of luck!

Just found this

Backpack with solarcharger, Ipod Remote and Bluetooth headset

by the way anyone know how to convert a Ipod Remote in a Zaurus Remote
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I'm not so impressed with that as I am with this [a href=\"http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/productpage.asp?productcode=PP0060&title=logic_3_-_solar_power_charger_for_psp,_ds_and_gba_sp]Solar charger for the PSP[/url].

If the PSP powerbrick worked, this might too and it's not too unreasonably priced.

Also, a lot of the power stuff on this suppliers website puts out about the right Volts/Amps. How would you like to charge your Z with a hand crank?

Software / Javanoid
« on: May 05, 2005, 12:46:41 am »
Welcome. This kind of request might be better posted in the software forum on this site. Javanoid can be found here:

http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/docs-zaurus-co..._1.54-2_arm.ipk

As for Frozen Bubbles, I am not aware of a port for the Zaurus. Froot is similar enough and works with the vanilla rom.

http://www.cs.unc.edu/~scheuerm/froot/

Hope this helps.

Hello,
I'm super new to Zaurus. I don't even know where to put this. But back to what I want to ask.

Where can I find a Javanoid and Frozen Bubbles for a 5500 with Sharp ROM 3.1. The ELSI where I looked, didn't help. I couldn't download it. I had the same result with Frozen Bubbles.

Thanks,
550

Qt/Qtopia / Trolltech Launches Qtopia Community Web Site
« on: April 25, 2005, 07:46:28 pm »
Thank you, Lorn. It is nice to have a centralized site for Qtopia developers. On the developer section of the site under the FAQ section titled "Is there an IDE for Qtopia development?" you list a link to Metroworks Codewarrior for Zaurus. That link doesn't resolve. They appear to have pulled the product. A replacement of sorts is on the site but they do not specifically mention the z. Anyway, FYI.

Update: Ooops, I see there is already a broken link thread on the forums. My bad.
