Sharp ROMs / Kismet And The Sharp 3.13 Rom
« on: June 04, 2005, 01:27:43 pm »
Well, I have to reply to my own post...

While I never did get the libpcap.so.1 issue resolved, I did have some success by going over to www.kismetwireless.net and downloading the latest build of kismet.  They have statically linked it, so at least I could get it to run, but I still could not get the kismet server to attach to an interface.  I will have to look into this another day

After spending much of last night digging around these forums, I am still unable to get kismet to run on the Sharp ROM.

When run from the command line (for debugging purposes) kismet complains that it cannon find libpcap.so.1

While I do have libpcap.so.0.7.2 installed and correctly linked (including libpcap.so.0.7, libpcap.so.0, etc) the highest version I have been able to find an ipk for is libpcap.so.0.8.1, and I have seen libpcap.so.0.8.3 metioned around here.

Anyone have any ideas as to what the deal is with libpcap.so.1?  Do I need to download it from somewhere that I missed? or just link to it from another library?

Thanks for your response, Felipe.

Just out of curiosity, what model did you replace your collie with, if any?

Cheers,
John

Yes they do, but we're talking about a home WLAN.

Ah, yes...  You are certainly correct about that.

My home LAN uses only static addresses, and I even set the AP to only allow specific MAC addresses as well.

Can't be too carefull

Sharp ROMs / Need A Bit Of Advise Concerning The Sharp Rom

To all of you who are using the Sharp 3.1? ROM ...

I have a Collie (5500) currently running OpenZaurus 3.5.3 with Opie, and was wondering if any of you have gotten the following things to work under the Sharp ROM:

1) Connect to WiFi hotspots (including those using DHCP)

2) an email client that does POP and IMAP using SSL authentication

3) OpenSSH (Need to connect to a server using advanced options like port forwarding/tunneling)

4) Some kind of screen rotation applet to toggle the screens orientation (landscape vs portrait)

5) Keypebble VNC (or a similar VNC client)

6) VoIP telephony (SIP client like Kphone / KPPI)

7) Wellenreiter

8) an app called "Shopper" (It may sound stupid, but this is a great little shopping list application that I just can't do without when I go to the grocery store)

9) App to play MP3's (XMMS maybe?)

There appears to be a decent amount of stuff available for OZ, and Opie looks really nice, but I have had a lot of trouble getting a few things to work right on it. DHCP is the biggest one, and I can not seem to get sound out of KPhone or XMMS, yet the OS plays stereo sounds when I plug or unplug a CF card, and IRDA will not talk to my cell phone, when it did under the Sharp ROM.

I hate to just dump OZ and Opie, but I really need to get my Z working, and I remember the short while I had the Sharp ROM installed, some things seemed to just work, I just wasn't sure I could get the apps I need.

Being a UNIX geek, I love fooling around with Linux, but I really do need to get my Zaurus working for me, so I am trying to find the "best" ROM for the job.

Thanks,
John

Solving DHCP issues is easy...don't use it.

You shouldn't really have DHCP on a WLAN anyway.

How so?  don't most wifi hotspots employ dhcp?

Are you sure that your DHCP server is configured and working correctly?
I'm using DHCP w/ dyn-DNS for quite some time now w/o problems.

Unfortunately, the dhcp server is working just fine...  it is serving an address to the machine I am using to post this message from.

What's the output of :

Nothing that I can see appears to be out of order here, maybe I am missing some important detail.  Also, by what means are you running DynDNS?  That is something I would like to eventually ssetup on my Z as well

Thanks,
John

Hi Mickeyl

DHCP behaves the same with WEP or no WEP, and with both the Wlan0 or usbd0 interfaces.

I've been running tcpdump on the machine that is running the dhcp server, and here's what I see:

Code: [Select]
09:39:50.080329 IP (tos 0x0, ttl  64, id 0, offset 0, flags [none], length: 576) 0.0.0.0.bootpc > broadcasthost.bootps: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from 40:00:01:00:00:01, length: 548, xid:0x8271a048, flags: [none] (0x0000)
          Client Ethernet Address: 40:00:01:00:00:01 [|bootp]

Here's the tailed output from /var/log/system.log on the dhcp server machine too:

Code: [Select]
May  4 09:42:02 localhost bootpd[483]: DHCP DISCOVER [en1]: 1,40:0:1:0:0:1
May  4 09:42:06 localhost last message repeated 2 times

I will install tcpdump on the zaurus in just a little bit, and report its findings here too.

So far it looks like udhcpc is requesting an address, but it is either not asking the correct way, or it is ignoring the "answer" from all servers (I've tried this on several servers now)

Hi all,

I am in need of a little help from the gurus.  I have beeb banging my head against this wall every night for over a week now, and can not track it back any further than I already have, maybe someone else has an idea that will help, here goes...

I have an SL-5500 running OZ 3.5.3 and Opie.  I am using an Ambicom WL1100c-CF wifi card, and have successfully connected to my home AP using WEP.  If I assign the Z a static IP address within my LAN, I can "see" (both ping and connect to) all machines in my LAN, and I can access the internet through konqueror-embedded.

Wanting to go out into the world and connect to other wifi AP's, I decided to try DHCP. When I activate DHCP from the OPIE Network app, I observe udhcpc attaching itself to the wlan0 interface, and it appears to run the deconfig option in its script (becase it sets wlan0's inet address to 0.0.0.0).  I can see udhcpc sending the request for an address (via a Discover packet) and I can see my DHCP server receiving the request and answering it.  Although my DHCP server appears to be answering the request for an address, udhcpc is either not receiving it or is not doing anything with it, because no address ever gets assigned to wlan0 until I set it back to static. I've even let it make requests for up to an hour with no change.

Any suggestions?

Glad I could help too, it was rather frustrating.

Now, if I could only get DHCP working...  but that is a matter for a different topic

Ok, I think I may have figured it out, but I need someone else who is getting the "host not found" error to try this out:

I think its the "Bookmark Name" field that is the problem...

If I left it blank, I could not connect. As soon as I entered text there, Voila!  It worked!

Since this is merely a "placeholder" within Keypebble's internal address book of VNC servers, it does not appear to matter what the text is, at first I used the word "test" then switched it to something more meaningful later.

So, if someone who is still experiencing the error could try entering some text into that field, and report your findings here, that would be very helpful

I can confirm SanctimoniousApe's difficulties.  When I finally got wireless networking working on my 5500 (although I am running OZ 3.5.3 instead of the Sharp ROM) I get the same thing from Keypebble...  a white screen and a message of "Host not found", yet I can SSH into and  ping any host on my LAN or the internet either by name or by IP address.

Here's the real kicker...  for  those of you familiar with using SSH to create an encrypted "tunnel" with which to "run" VNC through, I even get the "host not found" error when VNC'ing to localhost or 127.0.0.1 (for those not familiar with SSH tunneling, you access a remote host by using SSH as a port forwarder. for VNC you would do something like: use SSH to forward all requests to port 5900 on my.remote.machine through port 5905 on my.zaurus.handheld. all you have to do is VNC into local host and SSH handles the rest)

Conclusion: something is going wrong internally within Keypebble, preventing it from connecting to the specified host. Unfortunately, I have not been able to figure out what is going wrong.

Alternatively, upgrade to OZ3.5.3, where this bug has been fixed
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=76681\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Actually, I was using 3.5.3 (with GPE) and was still experiencing the problem, although since I switched to 3.5.3 and Opie, I have not had the problem

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / GPE Login Anomolies
« on: April 21, 2005, 07:09:15 pm »
After having made the mistake of changing my personal settings before reading about this bug, I decided to find a way to fix the issue without performing a flash.

Here's how I restored my login without flashing:

Since I was / am still able to login to GPE as root, I used "User Manager" to create a "dummy" user account called "dummy", (you need to create a dummy account because OpenZaurus requires that you have at least one user account at all times) then deleted my user account in "User Manager", hit "OK" and then re-launched "User Manager" and re-created my user account.

Now, log root out of GPE, and log in with your re-created user account.  You may get some GPE errors the first time, but it will eventually come up. As soon as GPE does come up (and you have finished entering whatever settings it asks for) log out and log back in and everything should be in working order.

Since I was able to login to GPE as root, it leads me to believe that one of the config / preference files found within your home folder is being corrupted when you change your user info.  It therefore, should be possible to track down and edit the offending file by hand to resolve the problem. (note: despite searching for such a damaged file, I was not able to find it)

While this is not a perfect solution, because I did still have to delete my account, I should be able to move my files into a temp location before removing my account if this happens in the future, and this process tool far less time than a re-flash

Hope this helps someone else out, and maybe points someone with more Linux ability than I in the right direction to finding the corruption caused by this bug.

-John
