Software / RDcalc
« on: May 24, 2004, 11:42:01 am »
I am trying to run RDcalc but the app is failing to run.

I think it may be for the Cxxx Zauri only but I can\'t seem to find confirmation of this anywhere.

I have tried to run from the Konsole and get \'Permission denied error\'.

Any thoughts ?

General Discussion / SL 700 Vs 5500
« on: May 21, 2004, 03:38:14 pm »
I have the option to get a (very) cheap SL 700C, instead of my 5500. I do want to upgrade to a clamshell at some point but I am not sure whether I would find that a 700 would be a retrograde step (rather than keep my 5500 and wait for a 750 or 860).

Specific Questions that I have are :

1. Does the lack of onboard RAM make a big difference to performance or can one make do with SD or CF cards

2. It is a Japenese model. I am assuming that it will not be too difficult to anglicise it?

Any one have any quick thoughts?

General Discussion / Predictive Text
« on: May 07, 2004, 05:12:06 am »
Using the TKR (including their kernel), there is predictive text using the on screen keyboard.

I have switched to the Cacko Kernel to overcome communication issues with my sonyericsson mobile, but this predictive text feature appears to be missing.

Does anyone know if there is an IPK out there that can reintroduce this for me?

Many thanks

General Discussion / Flashing yellow light when charging
« on: April 16, 2004, 05:20:49 am »
Last night the yellow light that comes on when one is charging the battery (and then goes off when the battery is fully charged), started to flash when I put the charger into the Zaurus and it hasn\'t yet gone off to reflect the fact that the battery is fully charged.

Does any one know what this means i.e. is this a sign that the rechargeable battery about to die on me or that the charger is about to fail ??

thanks

General Discussion / PC Link/ qtsamba
« on: March 15, 2004, 04:28:35 pm »
At work I run NT and therefore I have to use a serial connection rather than USB in order to sync or file transfer between my laptop and my Zaurus.

Using TKR or Sharp 3.1 I can connect between the two of them.

I have tried OZ or Hybrid Rom but have not been able to connect with my laptop. The reason seems to be that with TKR or Sharp Rom it has an application called PC Link within which there is a \'connection button\' and this toggles between a Serial or USB I/O or USB TCP/IP connection. Under OZ, there is no PC link application but the only equivalent seems to be \'Security\', which has a variety of options but not a Serial one.

So the first question is has anyone synchronised serially (rather than USB) with NT using OZ?

I have done undercover research and discovered that the command within the Console that is actually \'PC Link\' is \'qtsamba\'.

Ah  I thought I will try and run that under OZ. I did but discovered that this command calls upon the library \'libzdtm.so\', although on checking further \'libzdtm.so\' is actually a \'link file\' to the actual library file called \'libzdtm.so.1.0.0 !!

(Within /usr/QtPalmtop/lib there are actually three link files as follows (presumably these are all included for compatability with \'libzdtm.so.1.0.0\' being the latest version) :

\'libzdtm.so\' to \'libzdtm.so.1.0.0\'
\'libzdtm.so.1\' to \'libzdtm.so.1.0.0\'
\'libzdtm.so.1.0\' to \'libzdtm.so.1.0.0\')

Using Advanced file manager I can copy the actual library file \'libzdtm.so.1.0.0\' to my CF disk (to use later with OZ) but I cannot copy these link files, although I can add them to documents (whatever that means).

So the next question is, is it possible to create a link file as above. I know how to create symlnks but this is different.

Third question is, if I can do all of the above and run qtsamba under OZ will it create the serial connection that I need !

Thanks

General Discussion / Bluetooth - question about rfcomm.conf
« on: March 06, 2004, 06:57:07 pm »
I have just bought an ANYCOM bluetooth CF card , having been unsuccessful in trying to connect using infrared. The card has a transparent LED in the top left hand corner.

I have read the Bluetooth \' how to\' document but cannot get the connection to work.

I have however managed to pair the Zaurus to my SonyEricsson T68i mobile.

I am sure that the problem relates to the rfcomm.conf file as I cannot understand the instructions in the \'how to\' guide.

I am not sure

1. what the MAC address is or what the channel value of the DUN/Serial profile is ?

2. How they should be put them into the config file.

With regard to Q1 - I have run sdptool browse  and here is the first part of its output

Browsing 00:0A:D9:3D:DC:5B ...
Service Name: Dial-up Networking
Service RecHandle: 0x10000
Service Class ID List:
  \"Dialup Networking\" (0x1103)
  \"Generic Networking\" (0x1201)
Protocol Descriptor List:
  \"L2CAP\" (0x0100)
  \"RFCOMM\" (0x0003)
    Channel: 1
Profile Descriptor List:
  \"Dialup Networking\" (0x1103)
    Version: 0x0100

Service Name: Fax
Service RecHandle: 0x10001
Service Class ID List:
  \"Fax\" (0x1111)
  \"Generic Telephony\" (0x1204)
Protocol Descriptor List:
  \"L2CAP\" (0x0100)
  \"RFCOMM\" (0x0003)

&  also run hcitool scan and it would appear that the MAC address is a 12 digit number i.e.  00:0A:D9:3D:DC:5B and the channel is 1. But I am only guessing.

With regard to Q2 I have put these two figures into the rfcomm.conf file as an entry onto one line like so 00:0A:D9:3D:DC:5B 1 . However this is clearly wrong because when I run   /etc/rc.d/init.d/bluetooth restart  I get a parse error line 3 which is the line where I have put the \'MAC\' & \'Channel\' info.

Can someone help me ?

Perhaps a copy of what their rfcomm.conf file looks like would be helpful.

Many thanks

General Discussion / Minicom
« on: March 02, 2004, 04:50:00 am »
Am trying to communicate with T68i using infrared minicom. Have downloaded tons of docs eg Linux infrared HOWTO etc. Not much success yet but I will persevere.

CTRL-A seems to be required to access Minicom\'s commands, am I right in assuming that the on a Zaurus 5500, the Ctrl key is the Fn Key ?

I am hoping not as pressing Fn achieves nothing !

I am looking to comminucate via Infrared. Is the serial device :

/dev/ttys1 or /dev/ircomm ??

I also am getting a message that the serial device (whichever one I use) is \'locked

Lots of questions I know ..................

thanks

General Discussion / OZ - Symbolic links _
« on: February 08, 2004, 04:55:04 am »
Quick question.

I have been trying out the various roms and thought I would try out OZ again, a month later (and wiser) about the Zaurus.

Basically, I cannot instal any opie ipks successfully. The error is to do with \'symbolic\' links , when installing a IPK to Ram i get the following message:

\'creating symbolic links for /mnt/cf/sampl.ipk
Failed to link /mnt/ram/. to/.\'

I have found our how to add these symbolic links using file manager - make symlinks but I cannot seem to find the right link or am not linking in the right way.  In fact I seem to have loads of symlinks - could that in itself be a problem

Also does the /. mentioned above mean the absolute \'base\' folder or does it mean the /root folder?

Please can someone help me & point me in the right direction , as I am presumably 85% there but just missing the final 15%, and it is driving me scatty.

I was up until the early hours trying to solve it last night and I am v. frustrated not being able to see the true wonders of OZ and opie !!!

Thanks for any help.

General Discussion / Failed boot
« on: January 16, 2004, 05:48:21 pm »
I decided to reboot my Zaurus and discovered to my horror that it wouldn\'t reboot. I was running TheKompanyRom and it got into a loop.

Certain error messages came up first:

Free innodes count wrong
dev/mtdblock1 FILE SYSTEM was modified (1.5% non-contiguous) 2841/17740 files 1244/34816 blocks.

Then it got to init starting runlevel 5
starting bluetooth done
wait 5,4,3,2,1,
wait 5,4,3,2,1
wait 5,4,3,2,1 etc. etc.

I had had problems with syncing my email with outlook and subsequently got a disk defragmented error, twice, which was subsequently sorted out OK.

Anyone know what has caused this bootong error. A hard reset solved the booting error.

Two more questions. Where can I find the addressbook file on my Internal drive to back up onto the CF disk?

I am assuming that it is not possible to print from the Zaurus either through the PC or direct to a printer. None of the applications seem to have a print function.

Thanks

General Discussion / OZ/Sharp ROM and OPIE
« on: December 23, 2003, 04:24:29 am »
Newbie alert (but keen to learn).

I am keen to understand  the combinations of Operating System and GUI that are possible.

As I understand it, OPIE is an alternative GUI to QTOPIA. From looking at the OZ(?) Feeds directories it looks like OPIE can sit on top of both the Sharp ROM and OZ ? Is this correct? Which Sharp ROM? I have a 5500 and 3.1 ROM at present. I presume that the OPIE files would need to be different in some way for each underlying system.

I have real problems understanding what I need to download in order to get a system that works.

Whilst I applaud the time that must be spent for the guys doing all the work behind this. I have to say it is incredibly confusing as a newcomwer to know which files that I need to download and if I look at that directory it seems that I have to download about 50 files and then where do they go !!??. I am surprised that there isn\'t a zip file that includes all the files and places them in the correct directories?

I want to try it out but I just don\'t know where to start. Even the FAQ or manual can\'t seem to be downloaded in one go which makes offline reading very difficult.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

I hope this isn\'t  taken the wrong way but as a general comment to those developers and trying to be helpful as someone completely new to the \'scene\' - if you are interested in getting \'ordinary\' users to try out OZ & OPIE etc., you really need to present an easier way into understanding the process because it ain\'t easy to get a clear understanding beneath all that fog !!

5x00 General discussions / Where to put Apps and problem with File Manager?
« on: December 20, 2003, 04:50:31 pm »
I received my second hand Zaurus complete with Sharp\'s ROM3.1 but no Applications loaded in. I managed to transfer them onto the Zaurus and decided to instal them to my 128 Meg Compact Flash rather than the Internal RAM for fear of not having enough space to run the programs. Is this the correct thing to do?

Also File Manager seems not to recognise the Compact Flash. I have installed the program itself onto both the CF and Internal memory but it doesn\'t make any difference. Do I have to do a soft reset or something?

thanks
