Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Error building kernel
« on: September 23, 2004, 02:17:48 pm »
When I try to compile opie-remote, OE tries to compile the 2.6.8 kernel (and fails).

How can I instruct OE to build a 2.4.18 kernel instead of 2.6.8?

I have just set up the OE environment and it seems it is working. (good job guys).

Do you know which package do I need to compile to have a PDF reader for oz-opie?

Linux Issues / Network dies on big transfers
« on: March 30, 2004, 05:25:45 am »
I have a big problem. When I make big transfers to my 760 (a bunch of mp3 for example) the network dies. It usualy happens at 20Mb aprox, but it varies. Does anyone have similar problems?

Zaurus side:
  - Cacko QTopia Latest (also tried with X11 and the newest pdaXrom)
      - Hapens even just after flashing without installing any app

Linux side:
  - Gentoo (usbnet)
      - It happens with 2.4.x, 2.6.0, 2.6.1, 2.6.2 and 2.6.3 kernels

Zaurus - pdaXrom / RELEASE: Gentoo For Zaurus 0.2.2
« on: February 02, 2004, 08:02:58 am »
Release Notes for Gentoo For Zaurus 0.2.2
------------------------------------------------

Welcome to this new release of Gentoo For Zaurus.

In this release we added kernel sources which will allow emerging some more base packages. We have been reordering the base layout, to be more gentooish. We added tbz2ipk.nodev which removes the development libraries from the resulting ipk, making it smaller (thanks Fiore).

We have to give many thanks to Fiore Basile, who has been working hard on this release, compiling many packages (artwiz-fonts-2.4.tbz2, dillo-0.7.3-r4.tbz2, icewm-1.2.14_pre7.tbz2, joe-2.9.8.tbz2, libxsettings-client-0.10.tbz2, matchbox-0.7.1.tbz2, ncurses-5.3-r1.tbz2) and releasing tbz2ipk.nodev. We have the ipk of some of them too. Look at the main feed.

Please, test the \"tbz2ipk.nodev\" script. If everything works, we will integrate both scripts adding some command line arguments.

Our next main goal is the migration to glibc-2.3.2 and a more recent gcc. This is what we have been working this week. We have not achieved that yet.

Remember that the official feed of compiled packages for zaurus is in http://zaurus.spy.org/lekter/gentooforzaurus/packages . If you compile a package and works, please send me a note (fmonera at opensistemas dot com) so I can upload to the main site.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Stuck in "emerge glibc"
« on: January 29, 2004, 07:21:36 am »
I am stuck trying to emerge glibc 2.3.2-r9 (and r2 too). I need some help. I know this problem is not exclusive of Gentoo For Zaurus (I googled for it but didn\'t find a clean answer).

The command line: \"emerge -b /usr/portage/sys-libs/glibc/glibc-2.3.2-r9.ebuild\".

Those are the last lines (after some hours of compiling time):

Zaurus - pdaXrom / RELEASE: Gentoo For Zaurus 0.2.1
« on: January 19, 2004, 01:08:35 pm »
Release Notes for Gentoo For Zaurus 0.2.1
------------------------------------------------
Welcome to this new release of Gentoo For Zaurus. This time there are only minor changes to the distribution.

More \"real\" packages instead the busybox ones. Merged bison, procps, patch, bash, grep and coreutils into the main system. The system should compile some more packages without errors or warnings.

At the moment don\'t expect to \"emerge portage\" or to \"emerge system\" without problems. We need to update glibc and gcc before we can emerge those packages. I hope the next release will include those updated versions.

Remember that the official feed of compiled packages for zaurus is in http://zaurus.spy.org/lekter/gentooforzaurus/packages. If you compile a package and works, please send me a note (fmonera at opensistemas dot com) so I can upload to the main site.

Have fun.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Gentoo For Zaurus 0.2 available
« on: January 12, 2004, 07:54:45 am »
Gentoo For Zaurus 0.2 Release Notes
---------------------------------------------
There are many changes on this version of Gentoo For Zaurus. We have been working on reaching a stable environment where most packages can be compiled and installed easily.

One important addition is the ability to generate standard ipk packages for use in other zaurus environments, so the complete steps involved in the generation of a package would be:

1.- \"emerge -B package\": This downloads the sources from Internet, compiles the source for zaurus and generates the package in /usr/portage/packages/All/package.tbz2.

  2.- \"tbz2ipk /usr/portage/packages/All/package.tbz2\": This converts package.tbz2 to package.ipk

There are some compiled packages for zaurus in http://zaurus.spy.org/lekter/gentooforzaurus/packages. This list will grow. If you compile a package and works, please send me a note (fmonera at opensistemas dot com) so I can upload it to the main site.

There was a bug in the last release of zgcc-3.3.1 crosscompiler which is fixed now. If you want to help zaurus native compiler with a crosscompiler on the main PC, please, download the corrected tarball (http://zaurus.spy.org/lekter/zgcc/zgcc-3.3.1.tar.bz2) which size must be 31Mb.

The tarball is big (130 Mb). I hope it will not grow again in future releases. The size is a lesser problem because the complete environment is outside the zaurus filesystem (mounted over nfs). I hope to put all the environment over rsync so in future releases only the differences will be downloaded.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / New packages for X11 rom
« on: January 08, 2004, 03:26:03 am »
I have updated my feed with some new packages for the X11 rom. You can pick them up for cacko.zaurususergroup.com feed.

http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/lekter/feed

The good news is that some of these new packages are compiled under the \"Gentoo For Zaurus\" environment, so I only did an \"emerge -B package\" and the sistem downloaded the sources, the patches, compiled it and packaged it.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Gentoo For Zaurus 0.1.1 available
« on: January 06, 2004, 07:31:20 pm »
Here is the first release of \"Gentoo For Zaurus\" (GPL, of course). It is a complete Gentoo environment for zaurus. I hope this will help making tons of packages for cacko X11 rom (and other roms) very easily.

http://www.opensistemas.com/Gentoo_for_Zau...urus.715.0.html

Howto\'s, screenshots, status, etc on the web page.

Expect many bugs as this needs much work to be as stable, easy to use and fast as gentoo.

It is not needed to modify your actual configuration or rom on the zaurus. The complete environment is mounted over nfs. So please, try it. It will not harm your current setup. We need testing and ideas.

Features of 0.1.1:
    * Gentoo environment: It can \"emerge sync\", \"emerge package\", \"emerge -B package\", etcat, ...
    * Native compiler: Includes a native gcc environment for ARM based on the one from Cacko\'s site.
    * Cross compiler with distcc: Includes the zgcc-3.3.1 cross compiler for the main PC with distcc configured so the main PC is who does the actual compiling.
    * Complete linux system: You can install the applictions compiled over the environment before installing over the real system. Includes X11 so you can test graphical applications on this environment instead of the real system
    * Native ipkg format: You can install ipkg packages on the gentoo environment.

Acknowledgements:
    * Cacko.biz, for his fantastic X11 Rom, over which this work is based.
    * The Emerde Project, who made an effort to migrate portage to another platforms
    * www.spy.org (absentia), who is hosting the project

I am uploading all the files now to spy.org. I\'ll update the homepage and this announcement when all is ready.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Portage (gentoo) for cacko X11
« on: January 02, 2004, 04:41:13 pm »
Is there anybody working on this? If not, I would like to try.

With nfs solving the disk space, it could be posible. I can\'t see any serious problem. We have python, distcc and gcc 3.3.1 working.

The first steps will be having an prototype of environment in which portage can compile packages via \"emerge\" with some USE flags.

I will try tonight and post the preliminary results. Keep connected.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Familiar, qpe, qtopia for cacko X11 rom
« on: January 01, 2004, 10:19:12 pm »
Is there anybody working on this? If not, I will make a try, I\'d like better pim apps than standard X11. My final goal is to bring opie or something like that (I am triyng to get evolution working too, but it is being a hard job).

By the way, what could be the best way to run qtopia standard apps in X11 rom WITHOUT recompiling them? Could we run a Qtopia environment on another virtual terminal?
