C1000/3x00 Hardware / C3000/1000 Keyboard
« on: March 15, 2005, 05:03:04 am »
I'm asking about the C3000 but will guess the C1000 will be the same.

Is there anyone here who has had another C series machine and a C3000?  I'd like to know how the keyboard compares, the C3000/1000 keyboards look like real solid keys but so did the C860/760/750/700 pics until I got one - it was more like a ZX81 keyboard - except it worked better.

Can some kind soul explain what the keyboard is like and if able to compare it to the Cxxx keyboards, that would be great.

General Discussion / Using Internal Flash On Handhelds
« on: March 11, 2005, 07:22:29 pm »
With the release of the C1000 which like other C series machines, uses internal flash memory, I was thinking what a naff idea it is.   After all, flash wears down and eventually dies so the only logical reason for it in my mind is that people will have to keep buying new hardware.  Using an internal microdrive doesn't solve the idea as that can develop bad sectors and unless it's replaceable in the 3000, it leaves the machine a brick. I know the arguements about levelling etc. but even on my old C860, it started to deteriorate since I was coding and compiling and using swap maybe, the 512MB lexar card I had died a little while after my C860 went.  That card wasn't even 18 months old.

So, I was wondering (and this is semi-directed at Anton   ), can't a ROM be built to move all read/write operations to a CF card/Microdrive or SD card? Selectable by the user during the flash operation? Mounting the internal flash as read only?  I'm not too knowledgeable about building ROMs etc on the Z so maybe someone out there knows or would like to share their opinions on the wisdom/merits of slowly rotting flash.

I'm quite attracted to the C1000, even with a VGA screen   but the flash thing is a major issue for me, I'd really like the option to wear out a replaceable item rather than a non-replaceable one.

Off Topic forum / Cherryos Released! Run Mac Os X On Pc!
« on: March 09, 2005, 06:34:35 am »
FYI Mac lovers...

Well, the much hyped Cherry OS is out, I've just had a play and discovered it's no different to PearPC, infact, I could only get it to boot by using a PearPC disk image.

Check out www.pearpc.net, look at the comments for the news item announcing it, you'll find people have been pulling it apart and discovered it's a repackaged PearPC ripoff.  There were discussions late last year about it being a rip-off, which the author was quick to deny. However with the actual release of the product yesterday, today it's become very apparent that this product, like the test copies are just repackaged PearPC emulators. No 80% emulation speed, in fact I think it's a bit slower than PearPC.

And the moral of the story is, if you want a Mac, buy one.  Or don't get a pig to do the job of a panther.

General Discussion / Fm Radio On The Z
« on: February 26, 2005, 07:29:32 am »
I've seen a few posts about FM radio on the Z, usually focussed around CF based tuners which are ok if you have a free CF port and are able to get/write software to drive it. I'm not aware of any such software myself though I could be wrong.

There is another way which some may know of or use and some may not have known or thought about: an inline FM tuner.    A tuner which connects to the headphone jack of your PDA (regardless of which type):

Here are a couple I've found - these have their own integrated heaphones, I've also seen one which has a jack for your own headphones - which I'm looking for.

I hope this is of some help. FYI IMHO YMMV ;-)

Mac Issues / Ajzaurususb And Yp3700
« on: February 17, 2005, 10:46:54 pm »
Has anyone here actually tested the AJZaurusUSB driver with a Yopy3700?  It say's on the author's site that it works, anyone here done it? Any issues?

I'm (happily) ditching the old bulky PCs in favor of a nice new Mac mini, I'll want to be prepared for any...  surprises. ;-)

Qt/Qtopia / Compiling Qtopia
« on: February 14, 2005, 07:22:30 pm »
Hi all.

I've been looking at Qtopia 2.1 and have been thinking about giving compilation a shot for my YP3700. I downloaded:

qtopia-free-source-2.1.1.tar.gz
qt-embedded-2.3.10-free.tar.gz
tmake-1.13.tar.gz

And am using Ubuntu, ok now I'm stuck. I can't really modify the system I'm using, but I can create a VM for development. Where should I start, is there a howto which isn't seven trillion pages long in Aramaic? I've searched and read some stuff but my eyes get heavy and I nod off or it goes right over my head. I'm not much of a programmer, made it as far as C/C++ and then stopped many years ago ;-) GUI stuff and I'm lost. LOL!

I don't know how to tell what's relevant and what isn't, what's worth reading and what isn't.

Can someone with a kind heart and good spirit point me to a good place to start, what I need, what to read? I'm keen to learn.

Cheers ;-)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Remote X display
« on: July 13, 2004, 09:57:35 am »
Back in ye olde days, well a year or so ago when my beloved SPARCstation was getting too slow even for GIMP, I setup a Solaris x86 box which was faster and ran the X clients from that. If I remember on one machine I ran xhost + and exported the display on the other.

For the life of me I cannot remember how I got it to work, but surely this should be able to work on my Z and Debian.

Has anyone with pdaXrom managed to do this? I'd like to bring my Z's desktop up on my Debian box.

Thanks

It would be beneficial for all of us X/Qt users, if we post here known pdaXrom apps that install without modification.

Cxx0 Hardware / CF extender
« on: June 27, 2004, 09:09:37 am »
Hi all

This may seem like a stupid question, then again it may not.  Is it possible to have two CF devices plugged into a single CF slot?  I cannot find anything about this on the net.

When I look at my 860, I wonder how much would be involved in having a bigger modified extended battery cover, with sufficient space for two CF slots wired with ribbon cable into the original CF slot (does that make sense?).

It would make the Z a bit fatter but allow for a Wi-Fi and microdrive say.  I was under the impression (maybe erroneously) that CF memory cards were similar to IDE/ATA so could two be on the same slot?

Ideas, opinions, specs, data etc all welcome.

Thanks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / pdaXrom Calculator with RPN ported
« on: June 24, 2004, 11:08:58 pm »
I had a play with the pdaXrom SDK and I compiled Calcoo, a RPN calculator as the default xcalc is not too appealing, if anyone wants the binary or upload it somewhere then PM me, there is no ipk. Yes it's big, 695K but it was small enough for me not to notice.  It's actually quite nice as I prefer RPN, but you can use algebraic too and it fits on the screen nicely. Anyway, it's there if you guys want it just PM me.
