Security and Networking / Pretec WiFi CF does not work with 5500
« on: August 07, 2004, 09:36:49 pm »
Greetings,

My Pretec wifi card stops working with my SL5500. I created an account to connect to router but it just says "initializing" and then "Network Offline". My 6000 works with the Netgear router right away with the same setting so it cannot be the router.

When I plug it in my XP laptop, it takes a while for the card to connect and frequently drops off. Seems like the card should be working too.

Can anyone tell me how to troubleshoot it?

Thanks

Accessories / Connecting CF GPS to 6000L
« on: June 11, 2004, 08:28:46 pm »
I bought an accessory for my (BT) Pharos GPS to use it as CF GPS. After searching the forum and qpegps.sourceforge.net,I installed the serial_cs module, did a modprobe and was able to see the module running. However, gpsd -p /dev/ttyS3 -s 4800 followed by qpegps doesn\'t work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Security and Networking / Cannot connect to Bluetooth Device
« on: June 01, 2004, 10:55:29 pm »
I have a strange problem connecting to bluetooth device for the past two days:  When I type sdptool browse or spdtool search SP, my newly acquired Pharos BT GPS will return:

Failed to connect to SDP server on 11:22:33:44:55:66: Permission denied

where 11:22... is the MA address of the GPS. /etc/bluetooth/givepin has the correct PIN for the GPS. I tried different combinations inside hcid.conf, restarted blueZ, cardctl, cardresume, reboot but nothing works. Z has no problem seeing my BT cellphone though.

I am using old Ambicom BT2000 CF card on SL6000L with BlueZ. Running as root has the same Permission Denied message.

What can be wrong?  The strange thing is that it also happened two days ago but suddenly worked fine but return again today.

Oh, the GPS unit pairs with the same card when I use it in my laptop so it\'s unlikely the culprit.

Thanks in advance for your help

6000 - Tosa / Any need to stop USB device before unplug?
« on: May 08, 2004, 03:55:05 pm »
For devices you connect to 6000 USB plug, is there any need to unmount or any other action before you disconnect it physically from the Z? So far I just turn the Z off and unplug the device.

Thanks

6000 - Tosa / Got Earthmate USB GPS, now what?
« on: May 07, 2004, 09:37:22 pm »
I took the plunge and got the Delorme Earthmate USB GPS.

The 6000 recognize it right away as \"Delorme USB Earthmate\". dmesg says something about

USB HID v1.00 Pointer [Delorme Publishing Delorme Earthmate] on usb 1.27.0

Now what do I do? I installed qpegps but the defualt path is

-p /dev/ttyS0 -s -4800

Is that for connection through serial cale? What should I change it to?

One good thing about the setup is that the Z can power the GPS all by itself. The bad is that if qpegps is run in 640x480 mode, it looks skewed.

Please help me set this up.

Thanks

6000 - Tosa / USB host issue
« on: April 29, 2004, 01:58:18 pm »
Maybe this belongs to Hardware Forum but I posted there but go t no response:

I was successful in getting 6000L to recognize a Lexar SD USB reader when I connect them through the USB connector. Today I tried plugging in a 20G mobile Hard Drive. It caused the Z to hang and I hard to press the reset button on the back. The strange thing is that the component inside the HD seems to be moving when it was plugged in so power doesn\'t seem to be a problem. I can bring a powered USB hub to try it again tomorrow but it will be great if other group members can tell me how theirs worked out.

BTW, did anyone plug in a Delorme Earthmate(USB) into 6000? For $120, it\'s not a bad deal since you can use it both on your laptop or Z (i.e. if you can get it to work on Z).

TIA,

6000 - Tosa / The back of SL-6000
« on: April 21, 2004, 11:23:02 am »
Has anyone noticed at the back of the SL-6000, the speakerphone and Mic are placed so that you can almost use it as a phone(speaker phone on top, mic on bottom)?

I am really debating whether I should buy the expansion sleeve right now or wait to see if they will come up with new ones with maybe a GSM/GORS module? (wishful thinking)

Software / Opera to display Japanese?
« on: April 21, 2004, 11:18:04 am »
Hi all,

Got my SL-6000 yesterday. The screen is simply amazing and makes web surfing so much more \"civilized\".

What do I need to do to get Opera to display Japanese characters? Or for that matter, Chinese characters?

Thanks

6000 - Tosa / Sl-6000 screen vs Ipaq
« on: April 06, 2004, 05:17:17 pm »
Greetings,

I have been contemplating to get a Sl-6000 for a while since my 5500 is getting a bit old. One of thing about 6000 everyone is raving about is the screen. I am curious how much better is it compared to an Ipaq (which arguably has the best screen in the market) and Toshiba e805 (4\" screen)?

One thing I noiticed about the screens on 5500 and my Sharp laptop is that it lacks the \"warmth\" of a very good LCD.In the case of 5500, it\'s too dark w/o backlite and in the case of laptop it can be turned very bright but the images got washed out. When I look at the LCD on a Sony laptop, the image has very good color saturation even the backlite is turned to max. I hope this is not true with their CG silicon tecnology.

Since I am not a Linux guru, one of the major justification is the brilliant screen that will make using the machine a pleasure(The expansion sleeve was also a big thing but at close to $200 a pop is a bit excessive for me). But if the existing Ipaq or Toshiba e805 can match the screen of the SL-6000, I think I can wait a bit longer to see what to get.

Thanks
