Zaurus - Other distros support / Re: New Kernel for 5500
« on: July 22, 2021, 06:18:33 am »
If you'd like to compile a new, recent Linux kernel, your best bet is to get in touch with greguu who has ported the 5.0 kernel for newer Zauruses. I believe some custom code will have to be written to specifically support the 5500, but I might be mistaken.

Thanksfully, the sa1100 (5500's CPU) is still supported by Linux, I believe the folks over the Linux Kernel Mailing List will be interested in hearing that there's still someone interested in supporting these CPUs:

If I remember well the current Void Linux port does not have support for X sessions. For that, AlarmZ has to be used, although X is said to be running slow.

A list of possible ideas on what to use a Z for:
- games under emulation, especially those requiring a keyboard
- typing notes on the go
- IRC chatting, emails, RSS feeds reading
- remote ssh sessions
- bitcoin wallets cold storage
- IPTV .ts streams recording (those that require just a simple wget, no re-encoding involved)

I'd like to hear of any other usage too!

Hi MaBo and welcome back.

You're right, the instructions in the first post were not correctly converted from the old forum: for some unknown reason all the <_> tags under the _code_ tag were not displayed at all, even if they were still present in the post when editing it. It was enough to edit and save again it to make them reappear, everything should be correct now, thanks for pointing this out. I'll keep in mind this issue when fixing the remaining bugs introduced by the forum migration.

We used to have a Zaurus wiki containing lots of info and many tutorial, though it needed a cleanup and reorganization. An upgrade was planned but I have not yet found some free time to do it. I'll see if I'll manage to put online a copy of the old version in the next days, no promises though, you might find some help there. The two LEDs being constantly turned on might be an indication that the device is being flashed, or at least it's attempting to do so:

Damn, really sorry for that, I was going to reply to your other thread :( The only thing that might still work on it could be kexecboot on NAND, to boot any distro off an SD or CF card. Otherwise, the only way to fix this would be to desolder the NAND and solder another one in its place, but that's not guaranteed to work. It might be much easier to pick one of those cheap second-hand Zauruses on Yahoo Japan Auction. I'm currently looking for a 5000D there myself.

For the Java error: in your Java installation, the installed System class doesn't have a setProperty() method, or it doesn't expect two Strings as parameters. See if you have more than one "System.class" file, if so, check which of them is being used at run time by adding
Code: [Select]
-verbose:classin your command line.

For the qpose issue, there's a how-to here which might be helpful: http://zaurus.kruss.com/howto-qpose.php

The attachment directory was set as read-only for some unknown reason. Please let me know if all is working now.

Happy to hear that you have managed to make it work. It would be nice to have an updated Cacko with a more recent kernel, though I don't know if it would feasible.

Thanks for reporting the issue, I'll now take a look at it, sorry for the inconvenience.

I'll ping greguu about this post :) Out of curiosity, what programs are you running on both of them?

Welcome back Frank, and thanks for trying out AlarmZ! You should give VoidZ a try too, it's lighter and uses less resources than alarmz.

Adam Boardman has posted this related message on the Telegram/Matrix/IRC channel, reposting it here:

"We've intentionally taken it down (renamed to avoid breaking existing install base) as the next release is unfortunately not an apt up-gradable situation, should be out in the next few days. A preview is available to those that ticked the box on the survey."
