6000 - Tosa / Vncviewer
« on: January 27, 2005, 05:30:10 pm »
OK, I managed to make VNC working thru a ssh tunnel. However, I need to use 8-bits depth, seems higher values don't work properly. I can start my VNC server with any depth, but the client must be set to request 8-bits depth to work properly.

Anyone is having this problem as well and managed to solve it?

6000 - Tosa / Vncviewer
« on: January 26, 2005, 08:48:21 am »
I am trying to run vnc with the vnc server running on another Linux box and the connection must be made thru a ssh tunnel.

I started the vncserver on my-server on port 5910. Then, on the Z6K I opened the tunnel with: ssh -L 5901:localhost:5910 my-user@my-server, it enters into a shell session on my-server.

Finally, I started the vncviewer on the Z6K and connected to localhost display 1 issuing the password previously set with vncpasswd on my-server into the my-user account.

I am not getting any error message on the client side, but nothing else happen then a blank background.

On the server side, the log file fo vnc doesn't return any errors either and end saying client 127.0.0.1 is gone.

What am I doing wrong?

nmos: Have you rebooted recently? Maybe you have some CPU intensive tasks running in background with no associated window. It shouldn't be so long to startup.

GuruGeek2002: As far as I know, only the expansion sleeve is using it. It provides another battery and another CF slot.

Security and Networking / Vulnerability In Opera
« on: December 08, 2004, 11:22:28 pm »
Secunia has reported a vulnerability which affect all web browsers, including Opera. There is also a story on /.

I checked and this vulnerability exists on the Opera version shipped with the Z6K (7.25). It seems latest version of Opera is not vulnerable (7.54).

Anybidy knows how Opera can be upgraded on the Zaurus and if there is a cost?

General Discussion / Cannot Sync With Palm Desktop

Everything you want to know about the USB ports and the Z6K is here.

In case you were not aware, there is a forum section on the Z6K, so, perhaps you should consider monitoring it and post there when it is Z6K related.

I hope we will soon have a revamped site and be able to add all this info in updated HOWTOs...

General Discussion / Cannot Sync With Palm Desktop
« on: December 04, 2004, 08:51:32 am »
I did IR tranfer from my old Handspring Palm device to the Z6K. It is working fairly for most of the stuff, but there is still some data I was unable to transfer due to some unknown problem with the IR which after sometime doesn't work anymore. Lost synchronization, signal or something like that. I needed to transfer my stuff in small chunks rather than reason size blocks. In theory, it should have been possible to transfer addresses from the addressbook by categories, in practice I had to transfer each address once at a time.

The conversion programs existing for .pdb files won't work for the Z6K since they convert from .pdb to XML and Z6K doesn't use this format anymore, it is using the DTM databases format instead. I am not aware of a conversion tool from .pdb to DTM or XML to DTM.

You will find some old stuff in the FAQ or HOWTO about beam transfer. Basically, just beam receive on the Z.

General Discussion / Lots Of Questions: Faq, Roms, And More

I've seen the faq at http://www.zaurususergroup.com/FAQ.phtml and it's a good starting point; but when I start to dig deeper into ROMs, I find I'm pretty lost.  For example, if you do a search for OPIE, GPE, X/Qt -- the FAQ returns nothing.

Not to mention it doesn't cover the c860, 6000L, C3000 or any of the more recent machines.

The FAQ looks pretty old actually - alot of stuff dating from 2002.   Well it's almost 2005!

It would be great if we could update the FAQ with more recent information, or have a pinned thread in the newbie forum that we can update as information becomes available / changes.
I experienced the same, I even e-mailed to administrators and never got back an acknowledge or a reply. I even contacted the author of the FAQ for DTM, he kindly sent me all the doc, libs and samples and told me he is no longer developing for the Z for over a year. He asked by e-mail the administrators to update the page, he copied me on that page and I proposed to the administrators to maintain the page. Never ever got an reply or acknowledge. So, it seems nobody is reading the e-mails sent there and FAQ are left alone for a long time and nobody is having the rights to modify the administrator's list for the FAQ.

Thats's very unfortunate and redundant topics become to appear on the forum because the FAQ and HOWTOs are completely outdated.

Anybody is listening here?

General Discussion / Address Book And Calendar Export To Palm

Another alternative way would be to just beam the data from the Z to the Palm using the infrared port. I know it works from Palm to Z, so it should work in the reverse direction. It is not as simple as just syncing, but this way you should be able to beam most of your data. You will probably have to define yourself the categories and take care to beam everuthing at the right place, or you may beam everything in an unclassified category and move everything after that.

If you have files with suffix .IDX in a directory /home/zaurus/Applications/dtm, you are doing DTM. For XML, I don't know where are the files and their names.

If you want to program, it would be feasible to write an application to migrate DTM <-> .pdb, but I don't know any application existing today and doing that. And given the fact that in a near future most people will probably migrate to OZ or some not Sharp ROM with different PIM applications, this may not worth the effort for someone to write such an application. And, of course, it's not in the genes of Z afficionados to ease the migration to Palm devices... Seriously, it requires some knowledge of .pdb which Z afficionados may not find very useful to acquire.

I don't know if there is another way to order or get an hand on these iRiver adapters, but shipping and handling charges to send in Canada is 25.00$ for 5$ gizmo. A little bit pricey...

hubcapboy: Don't you have a tranfer in Toronto or Montreal????

It depends on the Zaurus model you have. There is two database formats. If it happens you have a not so old model, you have the DTM database and you are out of luck since I don't think it is possible to import data or convert to Palm format (.pdb). If you have a old enough model, the format of the databases is XML, I know there is some tools to convert pdb to XML, but I don't know if the reverse is possible.

If ordered from Amazon.com, the SL-6000L is coming with a flapping clear plastic cover for the screen, so, you actually have a screen protector.

6000 - Tosa / GPS and the 6000L
« on: November 30, 2004, 11:25:59 pm »
Just to clarify about the HaiCOM 303 MMF CF GPS, this is the one I finally bought, the GPS is foldable and it is coming with an external antenna mounted on a magnet that you can  plug in the CF module. So, it is possible to mount the antenna on a backpack, car top, etc and keep the Z in your hands or secured somewhere else. The wire is about 6 ft long and I think the magnet is strong enough to hold the antenna module on the top of a car on a highway (I assume you respect speed limits and there is limits and your car is not a F1).

6000 - Tosa / Is The Sl-6000l Worth It?
« on: November 29, 2004, 11:51:38 am »
I may add I accidentally dropped my Zaurus from the top of my car (~4-4.5 ft) and it survived nicelyb the experience. Only small scratchs under the cancel key and on the screen protector.

I would definetly buy again a Z6K.
