Archos forum / Questions About The Archos Av500 100gb Player
« on: July 05, 2006, 02:48:41 pm »
1. are there any major problems with this player that i am overlooking, or any big flaws with it?
Have not experienced any major issues.  i have noticed some delayed responses with the buttons, but not major.  I would like to see some firmware upgrades such as the ability to play music while viewing slideshows.

2. is the software easy to use, or do you have to go through a huge process for video conversions? (like with the x5)
I went through a big learning curve, but have the process down.  See other post from me.

3. is the picture quality really as sharp and good as they say, and is the contrast good, even at a slight angle?
I am very happy with quality of the screen.  Very nice!

4. is the backlight sufficient with lots of ambient light?
Does not do well on a sunny day, but don't think that is it's intention.  Works great in most well lit rooms.

5. Should i buy an extra battery, or is there some sort of charger that can hold regulr AA batteries?
Depends.  Video playback is 3 hours and music 10 hours.  If your doing longer flights for example, then yes.  I saw a battery back gizmo at http://www.newmp3technology.com/products.php?cat=42

6. How is the battery life for music/movies
Spec says 10/3 respectively.  Have yet to challenge it as I normally have AC available.

7. is the tv recording quality good? i have heard about it cutting off the heads of people, is there anyway around that? and does it do that for movies as well?
It is good.  You have different settings you can change that will cause issues as you indicate.

8. can movies play subtitles?
Never tried it.  I could experiment.  Tu parles francais?

9. are there dead pixel problems out of the box, like with psps?
NBot that I have heard or experienced.

10. what is the best case to get?
I use the case that came with it.  I saw another at the link I provided earlier that i may get, but the one provided is sufficient.

11.  are there any similar players that you would recommend over this one, or any that are coming out soon that i should wait for?
Apple is coming out with a new iPod this Fall (I hear) that is similar in size to the AV500 with a touch screen.  Will probably be more expensive.

12. how much room does the average 2 hour movie take up, after conversions?
Walk The Line is 2 hrs 15 minutes 47 seconds.  I ripped this in two files that are 1.75 gb combined.  This is the highest quality setting for my software - Mobile Clone DVD.  Why two files? - Read the other posts.
Saw - 1 hr 43 minutes 9 seconds - 865 mb - this was ripped in one file using the same software at medium quality and then required translation with Archos software due to the length (long story).  Bottom line is you can get very high quality if you sacrfice the HD space.  At 100 gb there is plenty of space.

*Edit:
I almost forgot, is there gapless playback? for playing a whole cd, does it pause between songs, or if a movie is too big for one file, does it pause while loading the next video file, or does it play smooth like a normal movie?

I haven't figured out gapless playback - that would be nice.  It is a complaint I have with my nano as well.  I generally shuffle anyway.
Movies play smooth - it's not like they are downloading from the web.  For the movies I split into 2 or more files I create folders and place all the parts in the folder.  You can select an option to play videos sequentially within a folder.  This way part 2 opens immediately after part 1 finishes.

PM me if you have more specific questions.  My advice - Get one!

Always an easy first troubleshooting step to update the firmware. Version 1.5.12 is the most current release.  I would start there.  Don't know if this version fixed you issue specifically, but it's worth a try.

Tried out the trial version of Pocket DVD Studio.  Video quality seems low.  I maxed out the slider bar for the quality and file size.  Am I missing something?

Also tried out "Xilisoft DVD to MP4 Converter".  Read about this on the French version of this forum.  Quality seems pretty decent.  I had an audio/video synch issue that seems to be resolved with checking filter in the audio/video synch section - filter says "Interpolate".
I ripped a 1 hr 40 minute movie with this program, but again the final copy on my AV500 ended at 1 hr 20 minutes or so.  I am ripping again with some other settings changed such as bitrate - was set at 1200, changed to 2500.  Also I changed the duration from it's default of "Full" to match the file - 1 hr 40 min 29 sec and the video size to 720x480.  We will see.

With Pocket DVD will I need to still use the MPG4 translator program after the DVD is ripped?

Thanks,

Tim

Found a resolution today.  I contacted Archos Tech Support via Web - what a laugh - They told me to upgrade to the latest firmware.  The firmware is listed in the form you fill out when you submit the ticket.  I had the latest firmware.  Must have been a canned response.

I contacted phone support TS and spoke to Scott who was well informed.  He told me it seemed like an issue with the process I was using. - I use Mobile Clone DVD to transfer my collection to an avi file, then I use Windows Media Player to open the file, add it to my library, and then synch it to the AV500.  This seems to work well for files that have a duration less than ~ 1 hr.

For items in my collection that exceed ~1 hr 10 minutes - I rip the file using the same program, then use the MPG4 Translator program that came with the AV500 to convert and then transfer in HD mode to the AV500.  No need for Windows Media Player.

This resolved the issue, but I am faced with a long conversion process.  ~1 hr for a 1 1/2 hr movie or video.  Not a big problem for me as I bought the AV500 to store my music and have an occasional movie on it to watch on a trip.

As I said before, this device is not for a non-techy person.  When I thought I had it cyphered, I realized I did not!  Hopefully I am there now, just have to convert all my video again.

I believe I finally have all my ripping issues resolved.  Being the newbie here I think that perhaps others have already figured this one out so I won't post.  Send me a note (PM) if not and I will respond.  If several are received I will start a separate thread.
Archos needs to publish a Video for Dummies book!  What a ride!

Hello All,

Been playing with my new AV500 for about a week now.  Getting around to actually watching some of the video I have put on it.   I have several videos that end early.  I see a similar post, but no resolution.

The files synch OK from Windows Media to the AV500.  The file size on the AV500 matches what is on my PC.  When I view information about the file on the AV500 it shows the correct size and duration for the movie.  When I open the file the duration is cut short (1 hr 47 min 11 sec to 1 hr 11 min 26 sec for example).

Seems to be OK for shorter DVDs that I have ripped from collection such as music videos.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Tim

Archos forum / Does The Usb Charge The Av500?
« on: June 08, 2006, 11:18:05 am »
Will the USB charge the battery when plugged in or do I always need the DC In plugged in?
I am wondering if I can use my Motorola Razr 12 Volt car charger to charge and operate the AV500.

Thanks,

Tim

Archos forum / Error On Transferring Video Files
« on: June 05, 2006, 08:00:08 pm »
Got it working just fine.  I rip the my DVD using MobileClone DVD, but then have to open the .avi using Windows Media Player, save it to my library, and then sync it to the AV500.  I haven't been able to preserve any menus though.  I am thinking this is not possible, but if wrong please let me know.

Also figured out the shuffle after some digging.

I have to say that for a reasonable techy guy this device takes some time to figure out!

You may have to enable the USB output on your camera through a menu.  I have to do this for my Minolta Dimage.

Archos forum / Error On Transferring Video Files
« on: June 02, 2006, 06:44:06 pm »
Hi,

Just joined today and read through some posts.  Hoping you can help me with probably a simple issue.  Just got my Archos yesterday and have only spent 3-4 hours with it, but can't get a single video file to work.  I am prepared to get this going tonight!  I have tried Mobile Clone DVD software which specifically calls out the Archos AV500.  Also tried the software that came with the unit - Virtualdub and MPG4 Translator.  I get the same error message when trying to transfer the file - 'The file is not supported on this device - try using...'
Is this a simple settings issue perhaps?  Has anyone ran into this?

Also, for the life of me I can't figure out how to get shuffle play to work for audio.

Thanks in advance,

Tim
