5x00 Hardware / High-capcity Battery For Sl-5500

I bought a 1800mAh unit [...] hacked off the plastic case and made some new contacts with copper tape.

Just out of curiousity: which battery was the one you used supposed to be compatible with?

I did more or less the same, but with an EN-EL5 (IIRC Nikon)-compatible 1100 mAh battery quite some time ago now. Still works like a charm.

Regards,
Chris.

This one: [a href=\"http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_3&products_id=99199]http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_in...oducts_id=99199[/url]

The width and depth match the Sharp one perfectly, but it's a few mm higher.
Steps are:
1. Hack off plastic case (carefully!)
2. wrap bare battery is masking tape.
3. Make templates to bring contacts from top of battery to bottom, as they are in a different order from the Sharp battery.
4. cut a thin strip of doublew-sided sticky foam and stick to the bottom of the battery.  This should be short enough to sit under the case when the battery is inserted into the Zaurus
5. Cut out template in copper tape, and solder to existing contacts.
6. Wrap the exposed copper in more masking tape.

The battery will be held in by the double-sided foam and the tightness of the fit.

Easy!

Obviously, charging will take a long time.

It also wouldn't fit in a standard Docking Cradle.

You can modify a nokia battery (Nokia Ref. BL-5C) to work in a 5500, it means making a little bit of packaging. . But they're 3.7V 850mAh, so they're fine to use.

If you don't mind a bit of hacking, it is possible to make a digital camera battery fit.  I bought a 1800mAh unit from 7dayshop, hacked off the plastic case and made some new contacts with copper tape.  Although it's a few mm thicker than the original, and stops the back cover from being refitted, it was possible to hack the cradle to allow it to fit and stays on through the tightness of the fit.  Have had over 3hrs with active wifi connection and full backlight, and over 8hrs idling.

For Sale / Wanted / For Sale - Zaurus Sl-6000l With Accessories

Hello.
I think everyone is about to call me a traitor   , but I'll carry on anyway...

I have a Sharp Zaurus SL-6000L (WiFi, no bluetooth). It was a bit pricey for me when I bought it, and I just don't use it enough. Before I got into the Zaurus market my intention was to have a fairly simple clamshell PDA. However, the C-3x00 series looks too square, and is also pretty expensive (and not really simple either ). I think I've found what I've been looking for (or as near as I can get). I am looking to sell my Zaurus and get a Nokia 9500 (funny, I've never seen it mentioned on this board), however it depends on how much I will get for my Zaurus.

It's in good condition, but has been used, carried around, etc- the silver paint is slightly worn around the corners and the screen protector has marks on it. The screen itself is immaculate, as is the main body of the device.

I still have the box, manuals, software, charger, cradle, docking slot protector, CF protector, etc. I would also be selling (or including):

- 2 USB host adapters (mini-A male to A female)(it would probably cost 10 pounds to get hold of one)
- 2.5mm (right angle) to 3.5mm jack adapter (short cable type)
- Various "The Kompany" software that came with it (about 75 pounds worth I was told)
- A complete travel kit (thin flexi USB cable, car charger, universal plug adapter)
- Battery extender (4 AA's)(missing cover though)

So... anyone want to make an estimate or an offer?

Thanks
Simon

Hi,
It's very difficult to put a price on something like this (esp. as there don't seemto have been any on eBay for a while).  I'm interested but tend to use my 5500 rarely now as it's just too buggy and slow for my purposes (multimedia apps).  The 6000 would be superior for viewing pdf documents though.
How is the battery life of the internal battery?

Well, OK, the whole purpose of me working on the package was to make life easier for those who wanted to use the source - by adding comments, documentation etc. It seems there is little incentive for us to do that so, instead, here is the original source used to build the app.

Well done koen, well done for sticking to your priciples.  This is a classic case of the implementation of an ideology losing sight of the spirit of the teaching.  So you've got your hands on some unpolished code a couple of weeks sooner than you would have done, and alienated a contributor in the process.  Well done indeed.

I'd like dump_cis etc. to help me diagnose why a card that should be supported by pcmcia card services doesn't work on OZ.

If you're trying to attach it to the Z you won't get away with running any 2.5", 3.5" or 1.8" drive without an AC adapter.

I'm running a Toshiba 1.8" drive off of a CF -> PCMCIA adapter on my SL5500.

pcnet_cs is built-in in OZ 2.4 kernels

in 2.6 kernels it is in module (default in images)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124635\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I have a Linksys PCMPC100 v3, which is a PCMCIA card.  It has the same ID as your Hawking card, and even shows up as hawking on the taskbar icon (even after ermovingall refereneces to Hawking in the conf files)!  However, when inserted it is recognised as a Linksys but shows the same symptoms.  I managed to get it working under 3.5.3 using the axnet driver, but have had no luck in 3.5.4.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges 3.5.4.1 For Collie

After some testing/use of 3.5.4.1alpha2, I am seeing some hard lockups on my Zaurus that didn't happen in 3.5.4rc. It appears to happen whenever I have it on for more than a minute. I reflashed it last night, and after configuring it, was reading an e-book. When I tried to suspend (with the power switch), it was locked. No response from the touchscreen or autoscrolling. I reset (flipping battery cover switch) it and put it on the cradle to charge overnight. When I got up this morning and pulled it off the cradle, again it was locked up. I couldn't tap the icons on the desktop, nothing. I reset it again, and left it sitting while I packed up my laptop, and in that short amount of time, It locked hard again.

I reset it, and as soon as it came up, I suspended it, and thats where I am now. One other thing I noticed is that whenever it boots, there is a message, "stty: bad file descriptor" or something to that effect. Possibly unrelated, but I figured I would throw it out there.

Has anyone else seen this type of behavior?

Thanks.

Yup, I've noticed both problems on my SL5500.  The suspend issue seems to occur every other suspension, I think.
Also, after flashing the ROM and installing cardfs, I had to do an ipkg-link to get most of the packages on SD working.
lastly, have not had any luck getting my wired ethernet PCMCIA card working, even after installing axnet package and checking the conf file.  Although it's detecred as a Linksys PCM100 v3 (correct), the taskbar icon to eject lists it as a completely different device and the axnet library remains unused.
Apart from that, it feels excellent.  Indeed the responsiveness is much improved over 3.5.3.

Now I have an error that I'm running the wrong kernel.  Kernel from http://hentges.net/tmp/do_not_use/collie/k...60409201626.bin and initrd.bin from http://hentges.net/tmp/do_not_use/collie/h...e_T1-RC4.tar.gz

I am confused.

I found the feed. I am currently running Hentges 3.5.3 T3. That was releases as a system 'package'. This release appears to be back to a module by module format?

That said, I did not see the zImage or initrd releases for 3.4.5.1? Where are they?

Thanks - Dan

Check the subdirectories again. The header-text should make it clear what's inside.

For an old-style collie install you'd download the initrd.bin (collie/hentges-*-image*)
and one cardfs file (collie/cardfs/*)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=122819\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Unless I'm mistaken, I can only see German files.  Are the English versions about to be uploaded?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Collie Oz-opie 3.5.4 Issues

Hi, I've got collie as well, happy to have new OZ 3.5.4 (congrats!) and agree that there are some problems as mentioned by amdonati, namely:

- SD card not shown in tray although working
- freezes quite often (my most often used application is calendar, I switch the Zaurus on in order to put in new appointment, it detects CF and often freezes at this point or when I try to suspend it, so that I have to move the button in the back to "replace battery" and restart..., of course date and time restes to 13th March)

haven't been brave enough to try 3.5.4 yet (on Hentges 3.5.3 atm), had a similar problem with my CF card in an older version though.  Resolved it by making the os eject the card when going into suspend mode rather than suspending the card.  Can't remember the exact location of the script right now, but I'm sure one of the OZ gurus can tell you where.
As I recall, it only occurred with certain cards (mine is a 256Mb Toshiba badged as Memorex).

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Symliniks Disappearing?
« on: March 15, 2006, 04:50:03 am »
I've had a similar problem recently, first noticed it when xmms stopped loading.
Also, I could only get mplayer running in a terminal window if the current directory was /media/card/usr/lib.  Had to reinstall cardf to get it running, as I'm not knowledgable enough to ling the libraries to the right locations.  It looked like the whole /media/card/usr/lib directory had not been linked correctly.  How can I check this in future?

5x00 Hardware / External Battery Pack With Sl-5500?

That's what diodes R 4.  Put a diode on the + of each battery in the parallel circuit and there can be no cross charging
The problem with diodes is that they also drop the voltage slightly.  Most of the lithium packs I looked at contained a charging circuit in them which monitors the state of the battery.  This should also (probably?) protect the battery from problems with the other packs.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=100909\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Do you connect all three terminals in parallel, or just the + and - terminals?

Cool
I was looking at getting a replacement digital camera battery, 3.7v 1800mAh for £10 but didn't fancy hacking the back of the battery cover to cope with the size.

Security and Networking / What Cf Cards Work With Wpa?

speculatrix: install OZ, insert card, configure & run wpa_supplicant

if it does not work then check firmware of card - 1.7.0 or 1.7.4 is needed. To update firmware you need hostap driver (with firmware loading enabled) and hostap-utils.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=100485\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

If you're going to answer a question, it is customary to attempt to make the answer useful!  Do you work for Micro$oft?

I am no Z expert, but can I suggest you look in the file /etc/pcmcia/config for the entry matching your card, then edit the line underneath starting "bind" to replace whatever is there with "hostap_cs".  Reboot and see if that works.

As for finding a hostap driver with firmware loading enabled, I'm sorry but I can't answer that question.
Maybe someone with more knowledge than myself will be able to tell you HOW to configure and run wpa_supplicant and where to get the appropriate hostap driver (if the standard one doesn't already have that facility) and firmware from.

HTH.
