Software / Mountable Compressed File Format?
« on: July 06, 2005, 10:27:58 am »
Hi,

I am going away on holidays in a few days and I would like to bring some websites and stuff with me on my Z...  I have the websites downloaded and retranslated to local links so that's grand. What I would like is some kind of compressed container to store them in, preferrably that I could mount directly and read the contents as I want. Any ideas?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / External Keyboard Interface...
« on: April 26, 2005, 10:38:52 am »
Hi,

In the summer I intend to make an interface for a standard ps/2 keyboard to the zaurus via the serial port...  I may also make it in the same box as a battery extender....

My question is this: is there an easy way to route ASCII characters from a serial port to the internal keyboard buffer?  I.E. I will handle getting the keystrokes from the ps/2 via a microcontroller, it's just getting the information routed within the zaurus is what I need some insight into...

If it were possible to do the same with a ps/2 mouse, how easy would this be to incorporate into X?   How easy would it be to connect a serial mouse to work in X on the zaurus, assuming I took care of voltage level conversion?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Zaurus Remote
« on: April 26, 2005, 10:34:54 am »
Hi all,

No doubt those of you who have used the zaurus remote with pdaxrom and xmms have noticed a response lag... By changing the keyboard map from XF86Prev to the letter z for example the response is much quicker...

It requires you to leave the window focus on xmms, but for me that is not an issue.

BTW, I suggest you leave XF86Play alone as it works as play / pause which is two seperate keys (x, c).

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Movie Playing In Pdaxrom
« on: February 16, 2005, 05:54:29 am »
Hi guys,

In the past I have used Kino to play different futurama episodes in divx. I don't currently have time just at the moment to investigate the same in pdaxrom so i'd love to get the gossip on the current state of affairs.

I've seem that the new mplayer build for cacko is now allowing 640*350 video playback?!?!  Cool, i thought it could never get better than 320*240 due to the lack of vram?

I'm not interested in watching video of 640x * resolution, as i don't even encode my divx at that rate for playback on my pc (512*3??).

Is the same performance in cacko now available in pdaxrom, and more considering the vfp...   Has anyone being playing divx videos somewhere around 400 * 300 resolution full screen?

Linux Applications / Serial Port Woes...
« on: February 04, 2005, 07:49:48 am »
Hi guys.

I've been trying now for a few hours over a few days to get the serial port under pdaxrom to successfully work. It's interfacing to my microcontroller, and I have stepped it down to 3.2volts max signal...  The problem is that I'm not getting the correct data......

I've tried command line stuff, but it doesn't want to work properly for me either. I can see this stuff on my windows pc in telnet without a problem.

9600 baud, 8 bits data, 1 stop bit, 1 start bit, no parity...

It also seems that I have no flow control...

anyone got any simple commands or bits of a c program i can try? I've been using a c program called com... it lets you supply information and displays the results... but  they are not correct...

Hyperterminal works grand......    on the 3v interface the high is exactly 3volts and the low very close to zero so i think the levels are okay.... it's been driven for a CD4050 buffer chip which should have more than enough switching speed!

Security and Networking / Irda Network Connections...
« on: December 30, 2004, 04:09:15 pm »
Hi all,

I've been wondering recently about wirelessly connecting my Zaurus to other computers, particularly my machine at home...

The obvious choice is to get a 802.11b CF card, however this doesn't suit me for a number of reasons - but mainly the fact that my main storage is a 1gig CF card... Also there's the battery life issue, and the need for a wireless card for my pc... which adds up to a bit of money.

If I was living at my parents home place, that would be a different story as I would have wireless everything around the house. In the place i'm living in currently with my girlfriend, I spend most of my time in two rooms...

Thus, i've been thinking about setting up maybe 2 / 3 usb-IRDA headers around the place (they sell quite cheap on ebay), with the added benefit of being able to keep both my slots full... and not drain the battery madly.

Question, does the IRDA on the zaurus support high speed (i.e. greater than 115200?)... I'm aware the range wouldn't be exactly great, but i don't feel that poses a significant hurdle for this scenario...

How easy would it be to setup a tcp/ip stack over this link? Any ideas or other suggestions would be very welcome... Only it would probably be a bit too slow I could see a pic (microcontroller), serial port to IRDA bridge (using a few high intensity emitters to extend range).

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Opera Under Pdaxrom
« on: December 28, 2004, 04:49:36 pm »
Hey all,

does opera exist somewhere for RC8? I can't find it in any of the feeds. I'm trying to get the few touches from Cacko that I loved, and Opera was one of them for it's scaling abilites.

Also regarding Firefox, does anyone know how to hit Ctrl and + to increase text size?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Making a drive image
« on: November 10, 2004, 06:05:16 am »
Hi all,

I'd like to be able to place a image file on a samba share (fat32) and then mount it as a filesystem formatted to ext2.  I would also like to be able to place one of these image files on my 1gig CF (fat32) and mount it and use it to install some programs that i would like to keep installed but don't use very often.

Also Is it possible to mount a cramfs image file as rw?  My zgcc is mounted as rw but i get a permission denied when i try to write to it.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Microdrive locking up machine on suspend
« on: November 09, 2004, 05:51:26 am »
Hi,

I'm using RC5 and my old 340 meg microdrive to compile some stuff. If i switch off during compile it doesn't like it... when i switch it back on again there's trouble. The current process will exit, i won't be able to see /mnt/cf... when i do a ls there it just hangs. If i eject and reinsert the microdrive then it won't see it...

I have to reboot to recover.... I have formatted the cf as ext2, maybe that is causing the problem?  If i'm very careful to make sure that nothing is accessing the microdrive when i call a suspend then it seems to come back on okay...   I don't recall any such problems with my 1 gig CF Flash.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Compiling Natively on PDAXROM
« on: November 05, 2004, 08:53:29 am »
Hi, I started another thread months ago about compiling stuff under Cacko but here we go for pdaxrom (current version RC5)

I have compiling some things easily with the dev img... However other stuff seems to want an endless stream of depends that always want something else as well!

My first tip to us all that want to compile but just need some tips is from one of lardmans posts:

Quote
Octave is actually very easy to compile (no configure switches required other than --host=arm-linux; needs GCC 3.xx though), so assuming you have a pdaXrom toolchain setup go for it. The OZ version won't work for you as it uses a later version of libc.

I was not aware of the --host=arm-linux requirement.

I think that anyone else with tips / problems should post together making it easier for us all to become familiar with the problems that arise and their template solutions thus creating a wider availability of compiled programs for all.  If a body of information develops here, i suggest that it then be turned into a FAQ.  If such a faq exists, i apologise and could i humbly be pointed in the direction of such!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / usb CONNECTIVITY problems?
« on: November 04, 2004, 08:45:22 am »
I was changing smb.conf to suit, and i typed in reboot. Now i have no USB connectivity no matter what i do...   i copied back the original samba file (which didn't work for me...)

usb network or storage won't work at all....

I also see in dmesg a load of inode problems and when i try to run fsck.vfat on the cf / sd it gives me an error:

File system has -15 clusters but only space for 5902 FAT entries.

Accessories / WIFI Harddrives
« on: November 04, 2004, 06:36:57 am »
This was something i read about over two years ago... Asus were preparing a WIFI 2.5HDD case.

Has anyone done a system using one of these types of enclosures?

http://www.xpcgear.com/asuswlhdd2us.html

...  there's probably a battery powered one around, or a external battery brick - etc.  It's a helluva lot cheaper than a usb host card + usb 2.5 hdd shell....

Apart from that you don't need the usb host card as Ps/2 External keyboard (and mouse?) can be connected to the zaurus serial port via a simple enough PIC microcontroller... I have yet to build this, but it's on the net.

So, keeping in mind i have a 256meg sd and a 1gig CF - which wifi card would you get?  I know that there's only SDIO wifi card coming onto the market, and it's still not even a possibility for pdaxrom for now at least.   Would the sdio be faster?

Anyhow what CF wifi cards are recommended by people using PDAXROM (would still kinda like to have cacko possibilities)...
