General Discussion / C860: Best handheld money can buy?
« on: December 16, 2004, 10:04:59 am »
Forgive my ignorance, but I'm confused about the SL-C3000's memory specs.  It has 16 MB SDRAM and 64 MB of normal RAM.  Which of these is used for memory (RAM) and which is simply a user storage location?

Does anyone have some good links to pictures of the SL-C3000?

I found a set of pictures here...

I was surprised when I saw it!  I didn't realize previously that the SL-C3000 was a clamshell (boy do I feel stupid!).  So, is this the official SL-C860 replacement?  Has someone already posted an SL-C860 / SL-C3000 comparison?

..wow...

Software / All Audio Codecs That Play On Zaurus?
« on: December 15, 2004, 06:12:01 pm »
Speex Audio Codec

Awesome!!   I downloaded the attachment above and played the audio samples using the suplied Speex decoder you compiled.

The next step would be to somehow get the codec integrated into some kind of GUI media player with playlists (for an entire book with series' of chapters)

Since Speex is made by the same people who made Ogg Vorbis, I'm assuming that anyone who knows how to integrate Ogg Vorbis could somewhat easily also integrate Speex.

I looked at the Zaurus Software Index (killefiz.de) and found that the latest versions of the following programs support ogg-vorbis:
  • mplayer
  • NPlayer
  • Opie Player 2
  • media player vorbis-plugin (this is what I'm currently using)
  • X Multimedia System
I'm guessing that any of these could also include the Speex codec.

One of the VOIP programs LinPhone already recognizes Speex, but it doesn't look like it could simply play files directly.

Are any of the developers of any of the applications listed above (or any others I failed to mention) reading this who could add Speex to the next version of their software (or as an upgrade patch)?

That would be awesome!

4 kpbs audio books on the Zaurus!  Now THAT's what I'm talking about!

Software / All Audio Codecs That Play On Zaurus?
« on: December 15, 2004, 12:26:44 pm »
Thanks! :-)  So... what's the next step?  Who has the know-how to encorporate this new codec into an existing Zaurus Media Player? ...or a stand-alone player (if that's easier to do).

Also, is the Windows Media Audio (WMA) available to be recompiled for the Zaurus?  WMA appears to have the best audio quality per kpbs which I've seen so far.  (RealAudio would come in second, and OGG third... of the codecs I'm familiar with so far)

Software / All Audio Codecs That Play On Zaurus?

What are all of the audio codecs that are supported under Zaurus?

So far I know of:
  • MP3 (MPEG-Layer 3) - plays on default audio player and most (all?) audio players
  • WAV (Uncompressed) - *gag*
  • OGG (Ogg Vorbis) - plays on "MediaPlayer" after installing special plugin
OGG is roughly twice as good as MP3, but neither of them are very good at doing what I need.  I have many audio books I want to listen to on my Zaurus.  Previous to my Zaurus I used 5 kbps RealAudio and/or 5 kbps Windows Audio.  MP3s can only go down to 16 kbps (and most encoders can only go down to 32 kbps).  Ogg Vorbis can only go down to 9 kbps (and forces the file to remain stereo), and even this is only possible if I encode the audio file to an 8 KHz uncompressed WAV file and then encode OGG using the lowest audio quality (this is the solution I'm currently using and the quality is fine for audio books... but it is a waste since it requires stereo even though the source is in mono).

Are there other audio codecs that are supported under the Zaurus through any means, hacks, installations, etc?

OR...

Is there a way to encode MONO OGG files (so I can get down to 4-5 kbps?)

Software / KDE-Pim/Pi 1.9.10 Release
« on: December 15, 2004, 09:19:18 am »
Has anyone noticed a problem in 1.9.3 with alarms that won't stop repeating.  There appears to be no way to close the alarm and instead it keeps being "suspended" for X minutes and then coming back again.  I have an alarm on my Zaurus that has been going for days now and it is getting troublesome.

My KO/PI is installed on my MS-DOS formated SD card.

Sorry if I missed this problem somewhere else... I looked everywhere but couldn't find anything involving my problem below:

I have the slightly older version of KDE Pim installed (Version 1.9.13).  I am planning on upgrading to the latest, but first I would have to figure out how to do with while preserving my data (appointments, e-mail, etc).  But, in the meantime, there is an alarm that has been going off on my Zaurus every few minutes for the last day and I want to find out how to permenantly turn off that alarm!

I get the following window:

Code: [Select]
KO/Pi Alarm!  [X] [OK]
---------------
The following event triggered alarm:
Suspended:

Missed Alarm:

Suspend duration (minutes): [ ]

[Suspent] [Stop sound] [Ok]

I've tried pressing all of the buttons, but the alarm keeps coming back.  I even disabled the alarm on the calendar.

We have a run-away alarm here... short of uninstalling the KOPI app, how can I get this alarm to go away?... permenantly?

Has this already been previously addressed?  (if not, then I'm surprised... although I do have it installed on my MSDOS SD, so maybe that's the problem, since the KDE Pim sometimes has troubl ewriting to the MSDOS filesystem)

If this should be fixed by the latest version, how can I upgrade to teh latest version without losing my data?

Thanks in advance!!  (The KDE Pim is AWESOME!!)

General Discussion / Kdeveloper On Zaurus. Other Options?
« on: December 10, 2004, 12:16:53 pm »
There is more information at http://www.kdevelop.org/index.html?filenam...1/download.html.  The site also says that it has recent support for QTopia and even gives compiling instructions.

It is supposed to be the all-inclusive single-location development tool for everything.

Anyone want to try compiling it for the Zaurus?

General Discussion / Kdeveloper On Zaurus. Other Options?

I'm still very new to the whole open source / Zaurus / Linux world.  A few days ago I stumbled across KDeveloper (on my Knoppix CD ... really cool, by the way  ).  KDeveloper looks really cool and it says it can work with any existing compilers... so...

Could KDeveloper work with VGA Zauri?  (It would be a little bit tight, but it should still fit on the screen)  Have anyone tried it?

If so, which compilers are the best for:
C++?
Java?
etc...?

It appears from the Zaurus Java FAQ that the Zaurus DOES indeed support J2SE (because it has all of the needed extensions).  (Can someone else read the link above and confirm that I understood it correctly?)

So... what are the different options for compiling Java Apps?  What are the options/preferences for editors?  How about VMs?  Compare and Contrast...

Thanks, =)

26
Ah... thanks!

27
Thanks! =)

So, J2ME produces the most portable Java code?  Are there any J2ME Java Compilers and/or IDE for the Zaurus (SL-C860)?

...and J2ME "should" run (with minor tweaks, but not with needing additional libraires or classes) on any Java VM?  So, it doesn't matter which VM I have on my Zaurus while developing J2ME applications?

If that's the case, then which Java VM for the Zaurus is the best?  Are there any Zaurus Java VMs that support the full J2SE (Java 2 Standard Edition) Java applications, including any of the many Java applications that are available today?  There appear to be many VMs available and there's an inconsistant census as to which one is the best...

Is it possible to write a Java application that will run on Desktops, Java Enabled PDAs, and Java Enabled Cell Phones, etc?  (...including Java Enabled Toasters?    )

What do I write the Java Application in: Personal Java, J2ME, or something else?

(Everyday I become a little more disalusioned regarding the actual portability and backwards compatibility of Java.  It isn't as portable as the hype said it was.  Nevertheless, it is the best portability language I know of so far...  or is there something better?)

29
What are PocketDesign and ZX4Z?  Where can I learn more about them and download them?

Thanks.

Can you include the "Developing Java On Zaurus" link you mentioned above.  In Google, all I found was This Link.  I'm still trying to figure out how to install KOPI Java on my SL-C860 Zaurus.

On the side... what's the difference between the Zaurus embedded evm and cvm applications?
