I know we've been having a lot of issues lately with our hosting here.  Mike has been dealing with our hosting provider and trying to get that resolved.

what kind of bandwidth does this take?  and space?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=126931\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I also have this question?
Maybe I can help.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=126979\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
It's not that there are space or bandwidth issues... we're on a dedicated server that has plenty of bandwidth and disk space... the problems are with the actual dedicated server, something is taking CPU utilization and the server gets bogged down.

We currently use ~200GB/month bandwidth and just under a gig of disk space, just so you know.

Hopefully the move to ibiblio will be successful and that will help by eliminating the hosting costs.

ibiblio ?

Right.. notice the date on that though.  That was well over a year ago.

I assure you that I wouldn't even consider switching the site over to them if I wasn't 100% confident in their abilities to host us.  Mike and I have been on their mailing list for the past year and we've seen all the upgrades and fixes they've done.

That's correct.  It was just a matter of bad timing... apparently when we tried to move the sites to ibiblio in Jan '05 they had some hardware issues (unplanned) and ended up needing to upgrade their infrastructure, IIRC.  Many high profile sites (much larger than our small sites) are hosted on ibiblio.

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / Is The Site Server Dying?
« on: May 02, 2006, 09:37:04 pm »
Sorry for the issues everyone... I've just been slammed at work.

I'm going to call dreamhost tomorrow to see what's up... I paid $1200 for an f'ing dedicated server and we've had more problems on it than on the shared server.

Please be patient with us.

Thanks!

Site Suggestions, Requests, and Updates / Moderators
« on: February 23, 2006, 11:10:56 am »
We have a few admins (global rights):  me, dz, foxdie, taim, tapjpa.  As dz mentioned, we won't be adding people to this group unless I know that they are a solid member of the community, etc.

We have several moderators (rights to specific forums).  If people want to be added as a moderator to one or more forums, please just send me a PM.  If I don't know you already, I'll look at your history on the forums.

With regards to the spam we get... by the time I get on the forum to check the spam it's usually in the trash can already.  From there and admin either suspends or deletes the member and put their member name and IP address in the ban list.

The forum already has email validation in place (you receive an email and have to follow the link to become active and be able to post).  I don't see the benefit of having admins approve new members as we won't know if they are spammers until they actually post.

I will look into the keyword filter and quarantine option... I think that's a great idea.

Thanks for the feedback.

Don't know exactly what caused the server to hang up so bad... dz and I are looking into it and we'll post more info as we get it.

I just found out about the issue about an hour ago.  We're on a dedicated server now so it shouldn't have to do with overtaxing a shared server anymore.  As far as I could tell all of my services were down (email, etc.).

I'll find out what happened from dreamhost and post an update here when I get the answers.

Sorry for the interruption!

Great poll!  I was temped to not reply for a while to see what other theories people come up with

I took a new job last June and it has just taken over my life.  It's been regular 60 hr weeks for several months now.   I'm looking to hire more people to help with the work load, hopefully it will get to a normal level soon.

Regarding the OQO - I actually don't like it nearly as much as my c1000.  I bought it so that I can have a mini laptop for work use (unfortunately working for a large company forces me to use windows).  Although it is nice to see it boot into ubuntu.  My biggest gripes with the OQO are 1) the screen isn't bright enough; 2) the keyboard just sucks (crappy for typing, buttons are too hard to push, not spaced well); and 3) the fan spins up quite loud.  Makes it quite annoying when in meetings at work (it sounds like a model airplane taking off).

I'm going to sell the OQO and looking at getting a thinkpad instead.

I bet there will be a 'brainstorming session' and oesf will be renamed to 'Internet Device Talk Forum'
Koen - why are you such a blatant jerk?  I'm seriously getting tired of your aggressive and hateful posts.  After everything I've done for this community, and just because I chose to shorten the name of the forums from OESF to OE you continue to think I stole the name and you continue to be rude to me and the community.

So unless you can change your attitude just leave.  We don't need people like you here.

Off Topic forum / New Oqo Model 01+
« on: October 31, 2005, 08:19:35 pm »
I just received my OQO 01+ and it's a decent little unit.  So far I much prefer the keyboard on my C1000 to the OQO.  I do really like the ability to plug in the adapter and connect a mouse, monitor and keyboard.

Now I need to spend some time to get linux on it and I'll be real happy.

OESF Announcements / Site Outage Oct 25 - 26
« on: October 29, 2005, 10:20:15 am »
Fortunately we weren't attacked.  Unfortunately Dreamhost disabled my account

Basically we were on a shared server with dreamhost (on the strictly business plan), and our websites were using > 25% utilization of the server and apparently that's just too much.

They've been notifying (automated messages) me for a while now (203 days), and I had responded to them several times telling them to move me to a dedicated server.  On Monday Oct 24 a support rep emailed me saying that I had 24 hours to respond or the account would be disabled.  Unfortuantely this has been an extremely busy week at work, so I didn't see the email until Tuesday night.  From there it took them about a day and a half to re-enable my account (and all services should be back online).

By sometime next week we should be on a dedicated server plan (New Moon), and I paid for a year so we shouldn't see troubles like this for a little while...

Sorry for the inconvenience!

@Offroadgeek:

Koen is not a native English speaker, sometimes he comes across as being a bit rude, I don't think this is necessarily how he should be interpreted (though in some cases I can see why he might be being brusque).
I know full well that Koen is not a native english speaker.  Why do you think I've tried to get people to get off his back in previous posts?

You have just proven my point that offroadgeek stole the name from http://www.openembedded.org
This is the comment that I have a problem with, and I don't think there's any translation issues here.

So I ask... are there others within the OpenEmbedded project team that feel that I "stole the name"?

My point is, that I didn't realize there was such animosity over an issue that seemed to come up kind of randomly.

Would it help if I change the name of the forums from OE Forums to OESF Forums?  Or is the issue the "OE" in OESF?

You have just proven my point that offroadgeek stole the name from http://www.openembedded.org which is around since 2003, while this forum was renamed in 2005. So again, OpenEmbedded has nothing to do with this forums. Please check your facts before responding with nonsense. And you wonder why some people sound condescending......
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=97067\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Koen - I can't believe I misjudged you so badly.  Here I thought that you were actually a nice guy, and that some people just misunderstood you.  Apparently I was completely wrong.  You are simply an ungreatful, angry person.  And I'm sick and tired of seing your negative posts on these forums.

Just so we're all clear.... the Open Embedded Software Foundation has NO DIRECT TIES to the OpenEmbedded project.  Also, the Open Embedded Software Foundation IS NOT AN EXTENSION of the OpenEmbedded project.  If fact, going forward, I'm beginning to wonder if the OESF will have anything to do with OE at all.

I had no idea that anyone from the OE team felt that I had stolen the Open Embedded name.  When I was brainstorming names with Roy (dz) late last year for this nonprofit (that I have yet to get off the ground) I couldn't think of anything really good or original.  I'm not that creative of a person, and apparently it shows.  I was looking at the Free Software Foundation's site, looking at what they've done with a nonprofit, and that's when I figured that OESF could be a foundation that support any open source embedded device, whether it be the hardware or software side of things, or even projects that support such things (like OE, pdaXrom, etc.).  I obviously knew very well about the OpenEmbedded project, but while the names are similar (not identical), our goals are completely different.

So misguided was I, thinking that the OE team and I had a decent relationship, not too long ago I decided to buy the OE team a C1000, and asked Mickeyl who I should donate it to... he directed me to coredump.  Not long after coredump received his new C1000, he released his hentges rom for the C1000 (as well as support for other models).  I'd like to think that this is partly because I helped out.

I'm not a developer, by any stretch of the imagination.  It took me countless hours to pull together the ZUG site, and I've spent more countless hours running these forums.  I figure, these are things that I can do to support the community.  I make a decent living... enough where I try and support our various project teams with donations of money or hardware.  Keep in mind that I don't own a company... the OESF doesn't make a single penny... I simply work and draw a salary, and enjoy my hobbies... the Zaurus being one of them.

It's funny... it just takes one bad apple.  You are starting to make me wonder why even bother with all of this.  Why am I so actively trying to support the OE project, when a member of the very project team is going to shit on me.

Software / Boy! Am I Lost

You can get the apps here (from elsi):
terminal
file manager
just download them onto a CF or SD card and install them via the Add/Remove Software app.

Or, since you say that you have connectivity working on your Z, make sure you have the Add/Remove Software manager setup correctly with a good feed.   When you click on "Install packages via netork" option, click on the little light switch icon (near the bottom right), then enter in a valid feed url (name it ZUG or whatever you want):
http://www.zaurususergroup.org/feed/

Select the feed, and tap OK.... the feed should pull up and you can install the apps that way.

Good luck
