ELSI General Discussion / You Guys Ever Wonder...
« on: September 25, 2005, 10:54:47 pm »
Quote
you ever whonder why nobody ever really goes into the darn elsi or how to docs?  Well, it would help if you added links to the oe forums next to the title.  I must of spent like 2 years reading forums and i never ever realized that we had a space for software and how to docs.  The software seems to be improving but the how to docs lacks a great deal since people post in forums and do not add any refference to the documentation of how to.

solution...
by implimenting these shortcuts ontop of the oe forums, people will know about them and try to head to these directions.  also, by adding a link to how to docs and asking people to reffer documentation or "how-to's" to the oesf how do documentation.

also, you need to add links to each site and have it pop open in the same window so you can seemlessly dive around without opening up multiple windows between elsi, eosf, zaurususergroup, and the oeforums.  each of those domains also needs links to open on  self window.  I wasnt aware of these other locations until recently believe it or not.

Just to give you guys an idea, i have had over 250 downloaded transfers for the snes alone.  Some of the ipk's in them are not available anywhere along with the specific files.  I spent 2 weeks searching around.  NO documentation about how to install untill i read every single thread related to snes installation available in the oe forums.  If this is the case, nobody knows about the oesf docs on "how-to".

This is not going to work until

1. all the sites link seemlessly
2. all refference within the forums points to the how to documentation
3. software is updated in elsi and used that as a download location as well
4. software within elsi points to how to documentation to where the how to explains what are the dependent files needed to run a specific job.
5. instructions on how to post in forums with refference to these locations with software.

From what i seen, people post about ipk's that are not in the elsi at all!!!!!
nobody updates them, and nobody updates how to docs because............nobody is really aware.  so i suggest on top.....software download and how to docs in the forums and the other domains post links ontop that refference between each domain with all the domains available within a small bar representing the whole oesf and this should help alot.  this is important to the newbies!  we have alot of them.

Boy, when you rant, you rant!  Some of your points are true, while others are not.

You are right when you say that we need more links between the sites, especially in the forums.  Many of our members have been around since before we switched the forums from ZUG to OESF (Jan '05), so most know about the ZUG and use it as a kind of 'portal' to most things Zaurus.  Plenty of proper links on the ZUG.  But I agree, the forums, ELSI, and the OESF site needs more links/cross reference.  We'll work on that.

Regarding no one updating the ELSI or OESF How to Docs.... this is just not true.  I've been somewhat impressed with how much the How to Docs have been updated after we moved them to the media wiki software.  As well with the ELSI... even though there are still a few challenges with the site, it doesn't go unused, and people are working on updating the site and fixing the issues.

Of course, we could always use help.  So if anyone has the technical ability and the desire to help, please just contact dz or myself.

« on: September 22, 2005, 06:38:28 pm »
Maybe I'm getting testy too, but here's my take:

1.  Hagisbasheruk - if you do a quick search on the forum for pocketworkstation, you'll see that there are already a few threads on it.  So yes, people have tried it, posted their thoughts, etc.  You just didn't take the time to look for yourself.

2.  Hagisbasheruk - you need to learn quickly how to post properly in the forums.  WHEN YOU USE ALL CAPS, IT GIVES THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU ARE YELLING.  And generally speaking, people don't like that.  So STOP IT.

3.   I don't see how koen was being negative.  He simply stated his opinion.  Granted his opinion may be stronger than others  , but nothing he said was really offensive.

4.  Bam - how was your post in any way a positive contribution to the conversation?

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Is It Possible To Change Networking Device
« on: September 21, 2005, 10:35:42 pm »
Basically I've  just recently found the aegis client for the 6000 and it works great, allowing me to access our corporate network (all buildings are wifi enabled  ) and I can use opera to access OWA (outlook web access).  The great thing is that I can have full access to my email and calendar (live without syncing) and I can leave my heavy laptop at my desk, and I don't have to buy a corporate approved MS device.

Now I'm trying to see if I can get this client to work on my 1000, simply because I prefer the 1000 keyboard over the 6000 (trade off being that the 6k has the built in wifi).  It's my understanding that the aegis client was built to only work with the wlan0 device on the 6000, though I'm assuming that it could work with any Z with wlan0.  So, can eth0 be changed to wlan0?  Or should I just be happy that it works on the 6000...

P.S.  I called meetinghouse to ask if they were planning to continue development on the client for the zaurus, and I got a voicemail back saying that they had no plans to.  Basically one of their customers paid them a good sum of money to port the client to the 6000 for their own use, and then allowed them to release the client and charge a nominal fee for it.  The guy in the voicemail said that there were slim chances that we could get the client to continue development, but almost nil chances of getting the source.  Either way, it was more info then what I was expecting

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom Rc11 For Pxa Devices
« on: September 20, 2005, 01:03:59 pm »
OK, I've just deleted hrw's post and the numerous responses to his post.  I am (as well as many others) getting tired of this crappy behavior from what I would think are respected members of our community.

hrw - your post was thoughtless and disrespectful of the pdaxrom team.  They work hard on their project regardless of whether or not you like it.  PLEASE JUST LEAVE IT ALONE.  We all know that you are an advocate for OZ.

all - constructive conversations are completely acceptable, please just keep in mind a few things:

- don't create a post just to start a flame war
- be respectful of the topic of the thread (start a new thread if your post if off-topic)
- if you're going to start a thread about the the differences of pdaxrom vs. OZ, please do so with a thoughtful/tactful approach

If the tables were reversed I would do the exact same thing.  I respect and support both development teams.  If anyone sees this crap going on elsewhere, please report it to me and it will be dealt with.

6000 - Tosa / Updated Fbvncserver
« on: September 20, 2005, 11:35:01 am »
I'm using the updated fbvncserver and it displays perfectly (connecting from my xp work laptop to my 6000l, I just can't seem to figure out how to get mouse or keyboard to work with it.  Basically it displays perfectly, but nothing else seems to be functional.

Any suggestions?  Am I missing an ipk?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Why Use Oz?
« on: September 20, 2005, 10:23:12 am »
There are a ton of threads on this forum listing the pros/cons of using OZ.  You might try searching first and see what you find.

Simply put, OZ is most like GNU/debian vs. the Sharp rom or pdaxrom.  They all are linux, but OZ is based off of debain so you're likely to feel more at home with OZ on your Z than anything else.

SIMpad forum / F'd Up My Simpad... Need To Get Jtag Cable
« on: September 18, 2005, 04:00:39 pm »

The cable you are trying to buy has a connector. Simpad doesn't have a connector on its board. You will need to solder either the whole cable or just a connector for existing cable. IMHO, it doesn't make much sense to buy a cable if there's no way to attach it, does it? And if you have to solder anyway, does it really make a difference whever solder the whole thing or just a part of it?
-albertr
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=96191\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I honestly don't know what makes better sense...  the way I see it, either way I still need a cable that allows me to connect the PC (laptop) to the simpad.  What I'm not understanding from your posts is how I would connect the simpad to the PC (ie. via a cable I bought or make) in order to use the jtag tools if I don't buy this jtag cable?

AFAIK, Simpad doesn't have on-board JTAG connector. You'll need to solder one anyway, so why not to solder a cable then?
-albertr
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
According to the [a href=\"http://opensimpad.org/wiki/index.php/Docs/JTAGHowTo]OpenSIMpad wiki[/url]:

SIMpad has a JTAG interface. With this interface you can install the primary bootloader if it has accidentaly been overwritten. With the help of the JTAG you can restore the bootloader and reload the operating system.
But if there's an easy way to just solder a cable to get the same results, I'm game.  Can you explain this in more detail?

SIMpad forum / F'd Up My Simpad... Need To Get Jtag Cable
« on: September 18, 2005, 01:40:51 pm »
I've googled all over to find a "JTAG cable DLC5" per the instructions on OpenSIMpad wiki.  I found a ton of links with jtag specs, etc, but couldn't find much on buying a ready made cable... then I found one on ebay.

Can someone tell me if this is the right cable to get to fix my simpad?

TIA

OESF Announcements / Site Outage On Sept 12 @ ~ 12:30 Pm Pst (gmt+8)
« on: September 15, 2005, 11:02:28 pm »
I got a nice email from Dreamhost earlier today... good details, and the specifically call out that their working on the speed issues...

Quote
On Monday, September 12 the greater Los Angeles area experienced a major power outage
affecting large sections of the city, including our main data center.  The power
outage began
shortly before 1pm PST and continued until about 4:30pm PST.  Our data center is
equipped
with a redundant backup power system with both battery UPS systems and diesel
generators,
but the backup failed and our entire data center was powered down.

We have previously covered much of this information on our official weblog (http://
blog.dreamhost.com/) but many of you have not seen that information so we will
summarize
the events here.

When the grid power to our building was cut, the UPS system kicked in and kept
everything in
the building up and running.  The five generators also fired up and began providing
power.
The building needs four generators to operate at full power so the system is
designed to
tolerate a single failure.  Unfortunately, two of the five generators failed within
minutes of each
other.  We receive our power from the building housing our data center and they also
manage
the redundant power system.  We do not know the exact reason for the generator
failures at
this time.  We have received some vague explanations that we have not found to be
satisfactory.
Regardless, the remaining three generators were not sufficient to meet the
building's power
needs and that caused the emergency electrical systems to transfer into a “load
shedding
mode” and the building’s UPS system to turn itself off, thus preventing permanent
UPS and
related equipment damage.  That shut everything down, including emergency lighting,
and the
building was evacuated.

About 15 minutes later, one of the generators was started up to power emergency
lighting and
a couple of our senior technicians made their way into the (still evacuated)
building and down
to our data center to assess the damage.  Since the backup power had failed, our own
data
center power remained off until the main grid power came back.  We then proceeded to
slowly
power up our equipment.  Servers (and all computers) consume significantly more
power when
booting up than when up and running so there is some risk of overloading the power
circuits if
too many of them are flipped on at once.  Keeping that in mind, we powered
everything on as
quickly as possible.  At that time the majority of our services were fully back up
and running
but some services were still down and we began the process of systematically
verifying all
services and making any necessary repairs and adjustments.  Whenever a large number of
servers suddenly loses power a certain small percentage of them will not come back
up properly
and when you have several hundred servers it takes awhile to verify all of them.

Once our own access to our servers was restored our staff continued working into the
night to
restore as much service as possible and to respond to as many of your support cases as
possible.  Some of our staff continued working all the way through the night and we
were able
to restore almost everything that first night.

Tuesday (September 13) started off early with all of us addressing the residual
issues.  At
around noon that day one of our core routers experienced an internal failure
stemming from
damage previously sustained during the power outage.  Our routers handle all of the
Internet
traffic coming in and out of our network and they are set up in a redundant way to
minimize
network disruption when a failure does occur.  In this case, the main cpu of the
router (called
the 'supervisor') died and the secondary one took over.  Everything continued
working almost as
it should have, but there is a remaining router issue that we are still working with
Cisco support
on.  That issue is responsible for the slower than normal performance of our network
and it will
be resolved absolutely as soon as possible.

During this outage, our off-network Emergency Status Page
(http://status.dreamhost.com/)
proved to be an invaluable resource for disseminating information among our
customers.  That
status page remained up throughout the power outage and was updated regularly as we
received new information.  Unfortunately, not everyone knows about it and we will be
working
to improve that situation in the coming days.  Those bloggers among you that did
know to
check the status page were extra helpful in passing along the information to other
dreamhosters who were still in the dark.  Thank you to everyone who helped out with
that!

This announcement will be followed by another explaining what went wrong with our
processes
and what we plan to do to address them.  That will come in the next few days.

We will be continuing to provide more detailed information on our official weblog
found here:
http://blog.dreamhost.com/

Also, everyone who has not bookmarked our Emergency Status Page should do so now.
That
page is found here:
http://status.dreamhost.com/

We will be improving on the basic page we have there to provide as useful of an
avenue of
information as possible.

If you have any additional questions about this outage, please let us know.  We will
be happy to
address all of your questions or concerns.

The Un-Happy DreamHost Powerless Team

C1000/3x00 General discussions / How To Take Pdair Cxxxx Case Off?
« on: September 14, 2005, 10:44:11 am »
I have a pdair case on my 1000 and I usually just use my finger to "pry" the clip next to the headphone port slightly away and down (towards the bottom of the Z), then I just pull the case carefully away from the other side of the Z, trying to be careful and not break the plastic "pin" that is inserted into a hole, and also not putting too much pressure on the little "c clip" thingy.

As I re-read my words above, I'm sure I'm doing more to confuse the situation rather than clarify it.

Due to a power outage in Los Angeles, Dreamhost had a complete outage in their hosting facilities and we of course lost our sites

It seems for some reason that ZUG came back up much sooner than the OESF site or the forums, and it seems that the OESF site is still down (yet the forums are back up... with db connectivity issues here and there).

Who knows if the sites will be stable in the next few hours/days.  I suspect that if the lights stay on then we'll be OK...
