Ubuntu / Extracted Cacko 1.23 Rootfs

How about giving the directions with actual terminal commands instead?  I think it would be helpful for many.

For Sale / Wanted / Anyone Want An Old Zaurus?

So what is the outcome?  I don't come in for a few weeks (months ... year? ) and there is a give-away going on?

I would love to have a 5600 ... but I shall not be greedy!  In fact, I have a 5500 to give away from Asia region.  You pay shipping.  It comes with batt (moderate to weak I think) and dock (if I can find it).  It is my personal one b4 I went with akita (which I just restored to Cacko 1.23 [again!]).

PM me.

Nokia Tablet / N900 Anyone?
« on: March 11, 2010, 07:23:48 pm »
Thinking abt it.

Got a couple of netbooks and love the portability compared to notebooks.
Just restored my akita back to life, after the less than stellar adventure with Zubuntu.
Either I stick to the akita /w cacko 1.23 or I get a N900.

Some of the new tablets are tempting, but until they have 7++ hrs batt life and 2~3 days suspend, they are less than useful.

Speculatrix, I would certainly go for the TV.

it's easy for an upgrade to slip into the house - new hard drive here, new memory there, bigger flash card in the SD slot.

it's a bit harder to hide a whole new gadget!!!

I know of someone who has a gf who love to lavish him with gadgets 'cos it makes him happy!
Lucky him!!

Ubuntu / Zubuntu X11 Faster Over Ssh
« on: August 28, 2009, 12:50:26 pm »
I believe the difference due to X11 drawing is possible.
Considering that not all the Z has hardware graphics acceleration.

Hi all,

How do I restore a Zubuntu installation back to Cacko 1.23?

Tips?  Appreciate if you can include links to any images or files needed.  Thanks!

Ubuntu / Netbooks And Ubuntu Making Me Lazy! :p

I'm also disappointed with how netbooks are going ... larger, bulkier + costlier ... the upside is that for those looking to get subnotebooks, they do not have to pay through their nose with Lenovo X series, Sony Vaio or Fujitsu subnotebooks, they can get a netbook and be quite ok with it.

If only netbooks evolve into the Psion devices ... seriously, thumbing on the device is really better when you consider how light and convenient they are!  I have a couple of netbooks with me, and frankly, they cannot quite cut it, though the MSI wind that I have is quite sweet!

Even the HandheldPCs, the HP Jornada 720 that I had was the largest handheld I think is suitable.  If someone made a netbook in the size of the 720, it would be perfect!  The keyboard was well designed and good enough for some touch typing (I have nimble fingers!!).

Now with the Nokia N900, I think I may let go of my Z SL5500 and akita later on.   But that is if I get the N900!

Meanwhile, time to junksale the netbooks!

I must say once more, why isn't any netbook makers making the psion form factor netbooks???

Dang!  Beat me to the N900 news!

Between the SHARP device and Nokia N900, I would go for the N900.

1. 3g mobile broadband
2. It's a phone!  It means I can use it to replace my phone and my Z.  It can possibly my netbook (?) as well?
3. SHARP dumped customers before with the earlier SHARP wizard organisers, then the Zaurus.  Why wouldn't they just dump this new thingie the moment sales go south?

If Nokia n9x0 uses a 4" or 4.5" or 5" screen, it would be even better!!  But for now, it still wins my vote!

EDIT: At USD$750 ... I have to reconsider my choice on the N900.

Prob for me is that I use my Z in a v specific setting:
1. Taking notes during my self-study and randomly throughout the day.  In English and Chinese.
2. When I was crazy enough, I tried browsing the web and checking email on this fella, effectively sticking to the Z as my sole machine, without notebooks.
3. Listen to audio mp3 recordings.
4. PIM, esp appointments, timer and alarms

I got Cacko tuned to perfection for all these tasks, hence my resistance to using Zubuntu.

Of course, as I mentioned, worse problem right now is that I don't even use the Z daily ...  ... I use my phone for appts, timer and alarms and my netbook for the other functions.

Ubuntu / Is Multibooting Zubuntu + Cacko Possible On C1000?
« on: August 27, 2009, 12:15:03 pm »
1. Yes, it is possible on the C1000.  4gb is enuff.  SDHC *is* supported on c1000 with this kernel and OS.  Amazing isn't it?

2. Yes, but seriously, on that small screen?  Better off writing a draft and completing it on a notebook/netbook.

You can also consider the latest SHARP MID zaurus-replacement device.

Also on Engadget ...

I like the 5" screen and Ubuntu!

EDIT: No 3g ... at this size, I really do not want to plug in an USB stick for mobile broadband.

EDIT: MicroSDHC ... ??  Why no SDHC?  Non-removable batt??

Flashing ROM is more like implanting new memories (experience, knowledge, skills etc) into our brain.  Installing a new brain would be like replacing the ROM chip itself.
