General Discussion / Lack Of Intrest In Forums Lately
« on: November 16, 2006, 05:38:33 am »
Just wanted to add that I am very thankful for all the help I have gotten from this forum, from both devs and even other newbs when I first started and although not as much new is happening on the sl5500, I find it very useful and usable. In fact, with the more stable roms, Cacko & tKc IMO, everything that I use (albeit, I don't use my Zs for internet, mostly PDA, ebooks and reference progs and ocasionally music on tKc player) works so well that I get bored and (when time permits) try OE again from time to time.

I think it's great that we have a choice between the stable and the cutting edge and since I have an extra, I can always try the cutting edge stuff without sacrificing my everyday use. My point in my first post, was toward the topic and specifically why I don't post as much as I used to. I have just as much interest in the forum as ever, I just don't have as much reason to post. I check almost everyday, just to see if there is anything of interest, but lately it's been more from a passive lurking and learning perspective.

General Discussion / Lack Of Intrest In Forums Lately

In my case, it's because there is not much new going on with the sl5500. I do lurk a lot absorbing general knowledge (and following what I call "the dream/wish" threads like anything with "new Zaurus," or Zaurus replacement," in the title), but posting is not necessary. I can't think of any new questions to ask concerning my two sl5500s, which are both running Cacko Crow (and which I am very happy with) and it's very rare for me to see anyone newbier than I asking anything that I could answer. I do have an extra Z to try new stuff on, but I never can seem to get OZ working properly and as far as the sl5500, the new OZ releases are THE bad (as in good/bad), the bold and the new. I am glad that the forum is here and even though I don't post much, it's not due to lack of interest (yeah forget all that other stuff, that's what I really meant to say).

It's mixed. You have to check each package individually.

General Discussion / Which Distro Do You Use?
« on: August 16, 2006, 03:59:46 pm »
I use tKc on my two 5500s. It's has the best package manager I have tried (I don't connect to the internet, so I can't compare using feeds directly). The downside is that developement seems to have been abandoned.

I try OZ (both OPIE and GPE) from time to time when a new release comes out, but can't ever seem to get everything working right. I'm looking forward to the next release (although, I'll have to try and get another sd card as it sounds essential and I have worn one out and got a bad one on my last purchase). From the buzz around here, it seems like there's going to be bigger and better changes.

It does work OK on laptops but it is a long way off the best version of Linux.

I suspect someone is confusing "best" with "easiest to install"
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=136571\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I found the installation to be less than desirable as well. I don't know why anyone would think it's any easier to install than other distros.

Sharp ROMs / Specify Fast Load From Console?

I want to load KoPi in a script, but with the remain-in-memory feature that can be specified in the gui. Is there a wrapper or switch for this?

I once moved some icons in the tab settings and when I tried to get fastload from the GUI, the option was gone. I changed it by editing the " /home/QtPalmtop/apps/Applications/whateverapp.desktop " file like this "CanFastload = 1." I'm not sure how that would be done from a script though.

Microsoft are now clearly implicated in this conspiracy. I have a folder called dustBIN on my XP machine and it is LADEN with files I don't want. It's all true.

Now that is both punny and funny.

Uh-oh! I found a "osamaladen.bin," file in my "/bin" directory. I always wondered what "bin," stood for.

The ducks were flying and then they weren't, so it goes to show the sky, but then again, how were they to know (or we for that matter) if there truely was anything under those clouds?

Sorry to ask ..but why do you need the bible on Zaurus?
I cant imagine a prist performing with a Z in his hands
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=119387\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I taught Sunday School and Bible Studies for 15 years. I have used every Bible software, for Linux or Windows that I could lay my hands on as well as my Zaurus, in classes and the Z especially to follow along with readings in worship services. I have arthritis and thumbing through pages and searching cross references is just too slow with books. Also with my Z, I have an entire library (theological as well as general at my fingertips) for references and in depth study. Just becasue it's the Bible, doesn't mean you have to study it in a cave by candlelight.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Openzaurus 3.5.4 Released
« on: March 23, 2006, 07:50:17 pm »
Thanks for the hard wotk OZ guys. Since yesterday, I flashed both OPIE and GPE on my collie. Both seem much better than the last release. Now on OPIE, I am trying to get KOPI working. It seems to install correctly to CF (40-24 zImage) other than some "failed to link messages, which also show up on other packages (portabase, hexatrolic) which run fine, but KOPI won't execute from the icon. I have installed;

libmicrokdelibs_2.2.5-r0_arm.ipk
libqpe1_1.2.1-r0_collie.ipk
libqte2_2.3.10-r27_collie.ipk
kopi-applet_2.2.5-r0_arm.ipk
kopi_2.2.5-r0_arm.ipk
(didn't see an icon ipk)

...in several different chronological orders (not sure if that makes a difference), but no go.

I try OZ on every new release hoping for some issues to be resolved and this one seems to be the one as the progs that did install run smooth and fast, but KOPI is a must for me. So far, I sync my KOPI data via file, between my other collie with tKc rom and both partions (XP/Mandrake) of my desktop. I'm sure it
must be possible with OPIE, as it is in the feed, but can't figure what I'm missing and/or doing wrong.

On GPE, I didn't have any sound. Should that be present from just installling, or does it require cofiguration?

When I open ASV I see no menu item to call MHCC or any of the other apps.
What am I missing, please?

This is the main flaw I see in qpsword. Try pressing your stylus on the body of the text, (where the bible verses are) and holding it down. A menu should then pop up and then you can select from whatever you have installed. It's a little tricky at first, but once you get the feel of it, it's not too bad.

Try handango.com, click on Linux link, and type "Bible" in search box. There are free pdf or html versions of the King James Bible.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=115608\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I need something that is not translation-centric.

I tend to prefer modern translations with lots of translation detail embedded.

The NET Bible and the Amplified Bible are personal preferences.

What I like about the Sword Project is that it equips one to choose the translation
or translations one prefers.

When dealing with older Christians and/or those raised in more traditional churches
I may use the KJV a lot as they are comfortable with it.

When dealing with new believers Elizabethan English is not helpful.  There are
also words in the KJV that now have the opposite meaning so that one would get
the entirely wrong message.  (I do not wish to engage a translation debate.)

Given the imperfection of the translation process I let the Holy Spirit guide me to
the English phraseology that best causes my mind to get the correct message --
always consistent with the rest of the Word and of course with the character of
God.

Sorry for the extra commentary, just felt the need to explain why I cannot make
use of your kind suggestion.

The NET Bible is HTML, so no need to wait for a PDA version. I use Just Reader to study (very readable on my sl5500), because it loads the links to the footnotes quickly. I run qpsword alongside mostly for the Strong's, ISBE and commentaries.
