Zaurus - pdaXrom / Avoid Nand For Storage
« on: November 14, 2006, 02:36:45 pm »

It probably wouldn't be a bad thing to have /var/log/messages stored on SD/CF I would think. Or would that slow your whole OS down quite a bit?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=146270\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Can't imagine it would slow it down. I turn off syslog unless hunting down problems anyway...

Having a microdrive I install pretty well all applications there and it works fine mostly. Takes a little time to refresh the symlinks at reboot, but I don't reboot for months on end anyway.

Does anyone have any real figures on what the lifetime of the nand would be under pdaXrom? I'm thinking that in 10 years time I might have saved up enough to buy a newer one anyway...

I put noauht in chap--it still passes the name Zaurus from someplace.

The isp insttructions say not to enter  a username or password, and in windows, I haven't.

It seems that the question is "what is it that the windows connection is doing that the zaurus cionnection is not?" right?  then what should i look for, and how? if anyone has an idea..

Actually the noauth option is for the remote machine - whoops. I can't see any options for not authenticating at this end...

I guess that zaurus is your actual hostname - this will be a last resort because there isn't a chap-secrets entry. I don't think that using a different phone will help because the same settings (and same remote server) apply. Maybe it is sending blank user name and password if none set in Windows.

Perhaps it isn't the auth after all then - have a look at the pppd man page (on another machine or via Google) and scan through the options you have set and what they mean. Do you have 'ms-dns' set? The zaurus seems to be asking for this just before it receives the remote term request, and you shouldn't need this (usepeerdns instead). Also perhaps try 'noip' which is supposed to help with buggy remote ipcp config...

which hostname, set where?
in win2k I am sending no username or password (in fact the isp instructions for things like blackberries say not to) that I know of. I thought it might be on the sim card (as you see, I don't quite get how the phone is validated.

I can tell you that I am on win2k over the phone connect rigth now, though
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=144648\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
That's interesting - Telecom NZ has a single user name and password that must be used for all mobile phone data connections just to get connected. They still charge by your phone account.

Have you tried setting the 'noauth' option so it doesn't try to authenticate at all? I doubt this will work though as the debug output you posted clearly shows the remote server asking for a name via CHAP. I think you definitely need an entry in chap-secrets. Do you have a set of instructions for your ISP/phone (even if for Windows - it might help)?

It would appear that changing phone won't help as there are no hardware issues, just configuration.

i have nothin at all inchap-secrets..other than the commented stuff.

The reason I think it might possibly be a name thing is based on win behaviour.

If i try from a work winxp on which I have a username, I can't log in..though the software runs, and the box sees the phone as a modem

If i try on win2k from home wher i am Administrator--everything is a snap.

I guess what I'll do is enter the ipconfig  ip numbers in /peers/voq and see what happens.  i thnk though that some "zaurus" hostname ifs setting off a flag at the isp-- one that accepts something windowish.....
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=144603\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Well it says it's using CHAP, so you'll need a valid secret entry to authenticate yourself to the remote server (maybe you only have one in pap-secrets?)

PPP uses the hostname to authenticate - the end result being that basically you set this to your ISP user name, not your actual host name.

Interestingly, I can connect in win2k.

I'll post the win2k ipconfig aand the Z settings this evening.

My isp wants me to buy a igher speed edge account for twice the price. the gsm disconnects if the server "thinks"  the connection isn't with the phone. --to put it vaguely and opaquely .  Since the win2k connection works, this shuold be surmountable.]  this is why the "zaurus" line just after the chap stuff struck me as ominous..... the name is maybe triggering something?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=144586\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Definitely surmountable - I just meant that it is no longer an error (you're just trying to use settings that the other server doesn't agree to). Your /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file should only need the ISP user name and password, and a * for the server:

Code: [Select]
# client server  secret     IP address
  *
If it says 'zaurus' in there anywhere that could cause the problem, but since the output shows 'CHAP authentication succeeded', it seems like there's no problem here. You shouldn't need a 'name' entry anywhere in your config file.

sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 <addr 0.0.0.0> <ms-dns1 0.0.0.0> <ms-dns3 0.0.0.0>]
rcvd [LCP TermReq id=0x5]
LCP terminated by peer
The computer at the other end is deliberately disconnecting you (received TermReq). I am not sure if it has anything to do with the previous line or not - I wonder if that 'addr 0.0.0.0' is wrong? What settings do you have for DNS and DHCP?

I don't know if gqview is in the pdaxrom feeds but it's the best image viewer I've found for X11. it has high quality scaling, allows you to fit to width (hit the 'w' key), fit to height (the 'h' key), it quickly redraws the image when you're paging through in full screen and has good default key bindings for the Zaurus. AFAIK it can't read compressed files (.cbz, .cbr, .zip, .rar, etc) but most (all?) of those files are just a zip or a rar containing numbered jpg's or png's. Once you unpack them and put them on the zaurus, gqview is perfectly happy to pages through them.

Maybe the /etc/profile file is not evaluated for the desktop icon's execution?
Probably - most terminal apps have an '-l' switch or similar to run with full login shell. You probably want to use it in this mode.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / How Do I Print To A Networked Printer?

I can now add printers, but whenever I try to print something, it doesn't work. If I go under jobs, I see that under state it says "stopped at novalue" and under pages it says "Unknown". Is this solvable?

Thanks for your help!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=143562\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Sorry, never seen that one before. Some quick googling suggests that maybe this is a bug in the foomatic stuff (for printers that don't directly support postscript), so maybe you do need to upgrade to a newer version of cups after all...?

Have you tried using a different driver (ppd file)?

Also make sure that xmms is using esound and not oss
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=143469\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

oh, I have reconfigured it to use oss because esound didn't work when I tried it the first time. Now, when I retry, esound works fine. Stange.
What's the reason for using esound rather than oss?

Thanks
daniel
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=143509\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
OSS uses the mixer device directly (and locks it so other programs can't use it at the same time). Esound is a daemon that allows all programs to share the sound device, so even if XMMS crashes, the sound shouldn't be locked out.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Suspend/resume Mechanisms In Beta3
« on: October 08, 2006, 04:33:21 pm »
The SL6000 has built-in wifi, which is why it needs to be stopped and started in the scripts; you're right about the cardctl doing this for you with an external card.

As far as I know/can tell, the backlight control (on suspend/resume) seems to be controlled by the kernel apm module (compiled in), so it would appear to be a lot more difficult to change than just editing a script...

We've seen various reports of similar problems with resume not working when suspending for very short or quite long periods, but I thought all those issues had been fixed. The clock is also another one to watch out for as the power management is of course heavily tied the time.

Interesting note about xfce - I have just not long upgraded to 4.4 over 4.2, and have had some issues with it crashing on resume. I can't pinpoint or reliably reproduce any specific problem yet though.

Can somebody compile a newer version of CUPS? I have 1.2.2 on my computer and it has the driver for my printer, but 1.2.0 does not.

Also, I have a (actually, two) .ppd files that I think will work, but every time I add a printer, it doesn't show up in the printer list. If this is easily fixable, I don't care about a new bersion of CUPS.

Thanks!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=143364\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Copy your .ppd files to /usr/share/cups/model/ and restart cups - should add the driver no problems.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Swap File Problem
« on: October 05, 2006, 08:20:24 pm »

swap will always be slower than real physical memory but when we dont have enough physical memory then we need to use swap at the sacrifice of speed. cacko/sharp rom have an applet that can monitor available memory and enable/disable swap depending on need. this does not exist on pdaXrom but would be a great app for someone to port over.

also, remember the general rule of thumb. swapfile should be around 2-2.5 times the amount of physical ram. ymwv
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=143195\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Obviously swap is much (much) slower than real memory, but it is quite curious that adding more swap will cause it to be used instead and degrade performance. Is this Linux-arm in general, or is it pdaXrom specific?
