Anyone Success In Streaming Live Tv To Zaurus?
« on: April 20, 2005, 09:44:13 pm »
I am a SL-C760 user, just got the wireless network up and running last month. Now thinking of streaming Live TV from PC (windows base) to Zaurus.

1. Case 1 : Using VideoLAN on PC and Kino2 on Zaurus
Result: success to watch and hear streaming from files and VCD/DVD but fail to stream from capture device such as TV cards

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

2. Case 2 : Using NSVTool + SHOUTcast on PC and Kino2 on Zaurus
Result : sucess to stream from capture device
while using Kino2 built-in with CACKO, success to get picture but no sound. After ungrade Kino2 to latest version, just got a grey blank screen.

3. Case 3 : Using Windows Media Encoder + Kino2 on Zaurus
Result : no response while try to open streaming connection with Kino2

Reference Link: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/vie...ht=streaming+tv

I got Dr.Z, but seems no function to play streaming content.

Anyone can give me some advice?

Thanks.

So in other words, you're basically already there but decided to whimp out at the last step  . The failure to stream from (a) capture device(s) is most certainly not a problem with vlc but more likely a problem with your Windows setup and/or a usage error.

I usually do all my streaming from Linux using vlc on both ends, but was intrigued and fired up Windows to have a look (usually just do that to torture The Sims or such  ). Decided to play dumb and just followed the steps from the VLC Streaming-Howto and had an HTTP stream either from my Cam/Mike or BT848-based capture card up and running towards my Z within 5 minutes ...

So you may want to re-check your settings and compare them with the vlc docs -- since you managed to stream from other sources, it's quite likely to be just a minor thing. If there is a real problem, help is also available in the VideoLAN forum on its IRC channel (details on the VideoLAN website).

Best regards,
Chris.

Hi Chris,

You are right.    Thank you.

I can use VLC to stream TV to my Zaurus now. At first it crashed everytime I open the capture device. Finally I find thur the VLC forum, and get the latest development version 0.8.3. After setting up the preference, it works now.

Really Cooooool!

If anyone get interested, please let me know I can prepare a setup guide.

a brief run-down of what capture card you're using, what OS on the capturing machine, what s/w versions work etc, would be great!

A little different, but I stream mlb.tv to my zaurus.  I use mplayer on my linux box to capture the streams and convert them to a zaurus-compatible file format.  Then I use mplayer to stream http to the zaurus.  Works great on both my sl-5500 and my c760.

"Would love to use my P4 laptop to encode video and send it out over the lan to my Z while I'm lying in bed."

That is exactly what I do.  The streams I take off of the Internet are in Windows Media or Real format - not supported by the Z.

I re-encode to MPEG4 at 15 fps and drop it in a directory under my web server.  Then I stream over http.  Because I use mencoder/mplayer on both my linux box and my Z it handles the file format well.  I use a single pass to encode the files which means that the quality is not the best - but it is real-time.  It may be possible to do more fps on my C-series.  I just haven't tried.  I guess a simple test would be to enable frame dropping and then experiment with how many frames you can get before it starts dropping.  Sports are a little more forgiving than a movie, but I would think my way would work fine for TV.

Eeeeeeek, you had me going there for a moment

Shouldn't that be 0.8.2-SVN? AFAIK 0.8.2 hasn't been released yet, so the Version currently worked on and available through SVN is still 0.8.2.

That reminds me, I really should update my VLC build for the Z soon, it's over a month old by now

Best regards,
Chris.

Hey thanks for the guide it worked well on the wifi at home   but I guess for streaming outside I don't have enough bandwidth (only 70Kbs for upload), too bad. It would have been fun to watch tv at work when my pc is running simulations.
