HELP! - Socket wifi card locks up my 5600
« on: January 23, 2004, 04:10:38 pm »
When I try to use my socket wifi card in my 5600 it locks up on me until I remove the card from the unit.  Reboots don\'t help.  In fact, if I reboot while the card is installed, it locks up on reboot.

I am using the Sharp 1.21 ROM.  I hear the 1.32 ROM can fix my problem, but the Sharp website says the 1.32 ROM should only be flashed to a 1.00 ROM 5600.

Any help?

Is it ok to just flash the 1.32 ROM anyway?  This unit is new (just got it 3 days ago).

Just wondering, what is the output of the command \'cat /proc/cpuinfo\'?

Ignore their website,  I updated mine from 1.21 to 1.32 without a hitch.
I\'m probably going to try the Zynergy ROM update tonight though as it adds some missing things.

Now I need to find a reasonably priced WiFi card for my SL-5600, any suggestions?

I have a 5600 (with the 250) and put on the new sharp rom with no problems.  I used an Amibicom wifi card with no problems. Slipped it in and it was recognized. I have heard the Socket is the most efficient with power use.  Not sure where the Amibicom stands on power use.

Thanks guys.

I already went ahead and flashed it this past weekend.  I figured that had to be old. and worst case I could just refomat the user area to make it clean.

As far as the wifi card, this socket wifi card I am using now is assume.  The Ambicom uses more power than the Socket (something like 100mA vs. 20mA).  That being said. the Ambicom is cheaper and can be had at your local office max.  Plus, I believe the Ambicom driver supports WEP, while the Socket driver doesn\'t.  Not sure about range comparisons.

I guess I should have said that I had to install the Symbol/Socket driver for it to work.  But now it works like a champ.

Here is some data on some of the wifi cards I researched when I bought mine recently.  All of the data is per the respective manufacturers website.

Card                                 Idle Power      Transmit Power    Receive Power
Netgear MA701                80                350                        250
Socket WL6000-320         20                280                       170
SMC SMC2642W             100              320                        250
Ambicom WL1100C-CF   100              370                        250

Thanks for the recommendations...

I picked up a Socket WL6000 on eBay for $30 and free shipping.
FWIW, Socket says this card is end of life and who knows if the
next one will still work.

Also bought an Ambicom BT2000-CF for $39 on eBay, hopefully
it is the right version...

I\'m using SL-5600 with original sharp rom (1.3.2) and going to use
symbol wireless card. Is it true that symbol/socket doesn\'t support
WEP? I can\'t even think about running my home wireless network
without WEP.

Just another data point, I\'m using a 5600, original ROM, with a Netgear MA-701 wifi card.  It works just fine.

w4lna:  Please let me know if you have any success with the Ambicom bluetooth card.  It\'s the best deal around right now, but so far I haven\'t heard from anyone who got it working.

abcdef,

Just a clarification - Symbol/Socket supports WEP, however the zaurus driver does not.  If WEP is important to you, then I would consider the Ambicom.  I hear that is a very good card.

I seem to be having a little luck with the Spectrum24 card, even though I installed the old 2.4.6 kernel drivers.  It is turning the card on and off but I haven\'t managed to establish a connection yet, but I still have a few things to change on the router.  The card was made by Symbol instead of Socket so it wasn\'t quite what I was expecting.  Its card info does match one of the entries in spectrum.conf.

I\'ve not made any progress with the Ambicom yet other than the LED is blinking when I insert the card.  dmesg was reporting a 16C450 UART when it was plugged in, and after I installed the bluez driver and csr script, it is showing up as something like a 16C895/? instead.

Total newbie here, just got my 5600 yesterday. I\'ve been reading all the posts on WiFi cards, and bought the Socket Low Power CF card. Now, I\'ve updated the ROM to 1.32 and I can\'t get the 5600 to recognize the card at all. I\'ve tried the driver that\'s linked on the Socket website, and I\'ve tried the Z. Anynergy ROM. Any ideas what I\'m missing?

Sorry to post such an overly discussed question, but I\'ve the threads and ideas I\'ve tried running haven\'t worked. I\'m afraid it might be a bad card, but I don\'t know how to check that.

Thank you for the help.
Dennis

I got my Symbol card working last night with the Spectrum driver from:

http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/

Even though it was the 2.4.6 kernel, it seems to work anyway.  I have updated to the \"special\" kernel too.  WEP didn\'t seem to work, but I surfed the net on my neighbor\'s unsecured access point for an hour. Pretty good card considering the distance (200-300 ft) and the battery level hadn\'t dropped off of full after an hour of use.
