Jumbo Xqt Package
« Reply #180 on: August 25, 2005, 02:42:43 am »
Ok... i was able to install xqt now and it runs nice.

now i am still trying to download the xqt-debian package which is the only one that i dont have until now (but i downloaded it about 10 times now... everytime it stopped before the download was complete and the package was corrupted). i am downloading now once again at the same time 1 package from chuckster's page and one from Daniel's.

hope it'll work.

Edit: The download from chuckster's page stopped again (at 42MB). but the interesting thing is that my browser still tries to download (but about 2 min ago nothing happened anymore)... maybe in few minutes i will get a pop-up saying that the timelimit was reached and the download breaks down.

The download from Daniel's page is at 32MB right now and is still downloading.... hope that this time it works... i need debian

If you are really stuck with getting that file, then you could try using the original debian tarball
(zaurus-debian-big-v0.18.tgz). My install script can use this file as well, but you will not get my customisations though (which is mainly firefox, thunderbird, eterm, winxp theme and openoffice). You can install those applications manually yourself using apt-get. The only thing you won't get will be my custom winxp theme

2) When I first opened Debian, I got iceWM bar at top of screen and that nice Debian background image on display and a transparent 'x-term' window.

Now each time I open up Debian I get a plain blue background and bar is at bottom of screen and the 'x-term' window that opens at same time has a different background image than the time Debian opened before.

Why has this background image and bar location changed?

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=90848\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

i managed to download now a working package and debian installation worked great and fast (about 10minutes). but as archimark said before i have the same problem with the debian backround and the iceWM bar. i have a plain blue background and the iceWM bar is at the bottom of the screen.

how to fix that?

Edit: and another thing: i can start debian just from the console... the icon doesnt work for me.

ls -la /hdd3/debroot/home/root shows:
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root      qpe     7  Aug 25 12:32  /hdd3/debroot/home/root -> ../root

ls -la /hdd3/debroot/home/zaurus shows a lot more:
the rights      the user    qpe    numbers  Date   .
                                                                     ..

                                                                     OpenOffice.org1.1.4

do you need to know the rights and the other details also?

because i cannot run debian from the icon i run it from console using su - before. so from console i am starting as root.

i also tested to change the theme in debian but after some seconds of loading, again the same theme remains and nothing changes... i have also tested your winxp theme but it doesnt work for me.

Edit: i just had to start from the console as Zaurus... no it works.

anyway the icon still doesnt work.

seems like /home/root needs some fixing

do the following:

su
cd /hdd3/debroot/home
rm -r root
ln -s ../root root
cd root
ln -s ../zaurus/.icewm .icewm

or try downloading [a href=\"http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/jumbo/xqt-debian-install.zip]http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/jum...ian-install.zip[/url] and rerun the install script over your existing installation

btw, if you install sudo and set the NOPASSWD for zaurus user, then you can launch from the qt menu.

I tried installing the jumbo xqt package on my 3100. The package itself installed fine, and I've been able to get firefox working with a little fiddling (starting it as root, etc). But I notice that the Firefox icon under the X/QT tab doesn't work. It says "Firefox not installed" when I try to run it from there. However, there is a Firefox icon under Applications that works fine.

Also, Japanese web sites do not display correctly. The Japanese characters appear, but it seems like every other one is wrong. Naturally this makes them appear as gibberish. Any idea why this might be?

I can't get Thunderbird to install, though. I get an error to the effect that the install of the ipk failed.

There are two firefox packages that work. Use whichever icon work for you and simply remove the one that doesn't work.

The Japanese web sites need to identify themselves with a meta tag that specifies which of the various encodings it is using. Try switching between shift_JIS and EUC-JP.

Try using thunderbird_0.6-2_arm.ipk. Hopefully this packages works.

I don't think it's an encoding issue per se (and yes, I did try various encodings to be sure). I've never seen anything like this on any other system. The Japanese is *partially* readable (it's obvious that some of the right characters are being displayed, so it's not complete gibberish like it would be if the wrong encoding was selected). I already restored from a backup (I was just testing it out) or I'd post a screenshot.

i tried now to install the new script but when i type ./xqt-debian-install.sh /hdd3/debroot i get an error saying: ./xqt-debian-install.sh: not found

before that i made the following steps:
su
cd /hdd3/debroot    (where xqt-debian-install.sh is located)
./xqt-debian-install.sh /hdd3/debroot

and then i get this error.

when i installed debian with the old script i did it the same way... and it worked... but i cannot imagine why it says: not found

EDIT: ok... there was a second xqt-debian-install.sh. this made the trouble
