Sl-5500 -- Intermittent Spastic Behavior!
« on: June 06, 2005, 03:22:50 pm »
Hey all,

Ever since I dropped (ouch!) my SL-5500 a few months ago, I've had this intermittent problem of the unit acting very strangely. For a few seconds at a time, it will act as if all of its input keys and buttons are being punched at once, calling up new windows and programs, entering garbage text into existing text input fields, etc. Outside of these episodes, the unit works fine. Lately I've noticed that I can induce this behavior by gripping the zaurus along the sides near the top of the case.

Seems to me that when I dropped it, something has shaken loose inside the unit that causes these 'fits'.

Anyone seen anything like this? Anyone know how to fix it? I'm willing to crack open my unit if it means just tightening a connection or something.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Okay, I've isolated the problem. It specifically occurs when I cover the IR sensor with my thumb. Very reproducible. I can eliminate the problem by going into 'Beam Receive' in the Settings Tab and changing the mode from 'Manual' to 'Automatic'.
