CoreDump,
I want to thank you again for all your hard work. This ROM is awesome.
I have a few dumb questions (because I am not a developer or programmer...just an "enduser").
First, every time I've flashed a Hentges ROM, I wind up with a very tiny amount of internal memory according to system info. Like right now I think I have around 700kb available. Why is that? How can I free more or do I NEED to free more? Everything seems to run fine.
The internal flash (which is mounted as /) is very small on Collie, only ~15Mb. The base Hentges initrd.bin ships leaves only about 700 to 900k of free space. But: that shouldn't be a problem.
Just install all your applications to SD and everything is fine
Second, I chose (on a whim) to say "yes" to make the sd card "home" or...something. :-) What does that do for me....is this for improved performance or what?
As answered by Snappy, it "moves" your /home/root folder to the SD card. This way you keep
all preferences and settings even after flashing another image.
If you upgrade to a newer Hentges image, the folder on SD will be detected and automatically be used as /home/root again without the need for you to do anything but type "ok"
Also, I noticed I now have card1, card2, etc. which look like that may be partitions of some kind. Are these of any use? What can I do with them? (You are communicating with a pretty clueless person here, you understand.)
This is actually a bug in the current SD auto-mounter (/etc/sdcontrol). card1, card2 etc are not supposed to show up until you insert a SD card with more than one partition. Only a larger scale rewrite
would fix this bug. Time better spend on something else IMO Maybe one day I'll sit down and do it.
Lastly, thanks for allowing the boot to just "roll on" without an input as to which boot you want (1,2,3, etc.)...makes for an easier reboot. But what can I do with those other "boots"..like can I put pdaXrom or GPE as an alternate boot? Or what use can I make of these alternate choices now? If I have problems getting into OZ, will one of the other boot choices help me?
Since you can not boot another kernel than the one you've flashed during installation (zImage) you can not boot an OS which depends on a different kernel. pdaXrom will
not work (I tried and failed).
You can however:
- Boot GPE or Opie
- Boot developer snappshots of either one (only interesting for devs)
- Boot any kernel-compatible OS
You can do so from SD, CF and NFS.
(Non-Hentges users: check out
http://handhelds.org/scap/port.28585.png if you don't know what we are talking about.)
In case you've messed up Opie or installed some mean app which causes your Z to freeze while booting (ie: going through INIT) you can (if you know how) fix your Z manually by booting into init=/bin/sh.
And why isn't Hentges ROM listed as a subforum on this board?
I don't think the userbase is large enough to justify a subforum. It's basically OpenZaurus + tweaks, not a fork.
