Apple Ipod Mini Microdrives

I think the answer is no, but has anyone been successful in using one of these 6Gb "iPod" drives by simply plugging it into the CF slot on the C1000? I think because it's IDE it won't work, but I'm curious why it will work in a CF card reader on a PC.

if it works on the PC then it should also work on the Z unless it requires a newer driver than what the Z has (the 2.4.20 kernel that Sharp ROM uses is ancient in the Linux world) but most likely, the Z just doesn't recognise the manufacturer and device id because its new and probably not on the known list that the Z has.

Nope, won't work.  They do not show up as cf cards, they show up as hard drives, they are "crippeled" that way.  Apple gets a huge discount on them because of the amount they get.  The origional zen mp3 players are the only ones that were cf microdrives.

Hitachi likes to force OEM's to buy the hard drive only ones (which are fine if you only want to plug them into your IDE channel (im serios)) ever scince hitachi got caght out when manufacteres sold devices with microdrives inside that worked in CF mode for cheaper than hitachi dumped the microdrives on the market for cunsumers

Apple may have dumped some of these also. I'd be surprised if they'd stand by and let Hitachi put them out there with the apple logo on them, which is how some of them are showing up. Either way it sounds like it's not a plug and play scenario.

According to the [a href=\"http://www.compactflash.org/]CF Specs[/url], groundin pin 9 at powerup will cause a card to go into "True-IDE" Mode. I think the Hitachi's may have that pin tied to ground. If that is true, they should be able to run in regular mode by removing the pull down reistor on the drive.

I just picked up the 6gb hitachi in the retail blister pack. Works fine, but it doesn't have the lip on it to make it easy to pull out again afterwards - i have to resort to a piece of tape to make a tab to pull on.

alaot of people have talked about pin 9, wouldnt be to hard to test but so far no one is willing to pull one apart, if i had one of those that i didnt relise only worked in true IDE that would be the first thing i would try

well, I just had a quick check on the price for an ipod mini on shopbot and they cost almost as much as a 4GB CF card. As I understand, they have 4GB microdrives internally and from various reviews the general consensus is that CF flash cards are faster and more durable than CF microdrives. So unless they had 8GB microdrives, I don't really see a point in scavenging their microdrives instead of getting a retail CF card.

Well, my 6gb microdrive was ~$330 Canadian, with a mail in rebate that brings it down to ~$280 or so. The prices on these things have really come down. I'm still waiting to see the cheap 5gb Seagate drives that were supposed to come out, though.
