I Have A Dilemma.
« on: December 20, 2005, 10:01:53 pm »
Okay, the Z is cool and all, but I really don't like the Sharp rom.  Unfortunetly it is the only rom that lets me switch between wireless networks easily.  This and last week I've used it a grand total of 3 times.  PDAX is cool looking, but sometimes the windows really lagg out and then there's the wireless thing.  Then there's OpenZaurus, but it has the wireless problems as well.  Guylhem's was working pretty well, but the last version has the same wireless problem.  I feel like it's in this funny limbo area, between a pda and a full computer.  It does most everything I would use a laptop for, with a quarter the screen size three quarters the power and a tenth of the storage space.  Then it sorta does what I used to use my iPaq for, only slower to start up, no sync support for my computers, half the ram, but a much nicer screen.  So now I don't know if I should sell it, if I even can, with all I've done to it, or keep waiting till someone eventually figures out the wifi thing, if ever.  I'm not even sure how important that is to the devs....

I sort of know how you feel. The hardware of the 6000 series is the best in my opinion. But the chain is only as strong as the weakest link. In this case it is the software, ROM specifically.

I also have a clamshell model. Now i like the 6000 better overall but with the Cacko rom on the C3x00 series it is a better machine. If we could only get the new Cacko 1.23 on the 6000. That would be awesome. Guylhem's ROM is the closest to being useable everyday. There is the wireless problem which is a major pain if you are attempting to use wireless at at local hotspot. If only he had time to polish it up. I like being able to use external keyboards with hacking keyhelper. Also underclocking for extra battery life is nice.

For you BarryW, i would say hang on to it. Look at the SL-5x00 series. It is much older than the 6000 and it is still being  developed. Each new ROM still builds support. Well OZ does. Maybe not sharp. But Sharp is not helping out with any of them really. If you find that some other device serves you better right now then use it. Pack up your Z safely and store it way till this time next year. You will probably be surprised at what new projects have been born for the 6000.

In the mean time we just have to wait till Guylhem gets some free time to polish up the RC of version 1 and make a proper release of 1.0. I have not used PdaXrom so i cant speak on that one. It does look promising. I hope it is fast. That is one thing that bugs me. I dont know if Cacko will ever be ported to the 6000. Some one will have to give Anton one of their precious  6000 and he will have to have the time to work on it.

So my advice to you after all that would be to hang on to it. Dont sell it you dont really need the money anyway. haha. If you did we wouldnt be buying Zaurii in the first place
SL-5500 w/ TKC 2.0 beta 3 rom
SL-6000L + Sled w/ Guylhem or Sharp rom. Have not tried PdaXrom YET
SL-C3000 - w/ Cacko C3Kb1. Like it alot

maybe a few scripts in pdaxrom?  then just use whatever wireless-starting script suits the occasion?
I had fournd pdaxrom to be pretty snappy using icewm on the 6k

I'm actually checking out g-rom rc 4 now... so I can't address the wireless stuff beyond noticing that it sure wasn't working outta da box.

I must be weird.  I'm still pretty happy with the Sharp ROM.  Although, I've remounted the / partion read/write many times and modified things so maybe I'm just used to my own customizations.

About the only complaints I have are that I can't use WPA protected wireless networks, and the kernel isn't as snappish as it should be.  But one of these days I'm going to play with updating the kernel which could solve both of these problems.

Like I said if it weren't for the wireless things I'd be pdax all the way.  I really like xfce, that's mostly what I use on my linux laptop.  It's just I move between 8 different wireless networks, and reconfiguring in the console is a pita.

Have you tried using shell scripts?  I have a lot of those to change between various configurations.

For example, you can take your 8 wireless configurations, and put each in a tar file.  Then you have 8 shell scripts, each of which untars one set of configs and resets the network driver.

Then, to switch networks, you just run one command.  Or, depending on your WM, you could put the scripts into a menu so you don't even have to touch the command line.

That's what I would do in this situation.  It takes a little work to set up, but it's a one time thing.  IMHO, if you don't use scripts to automate tasks, you're wasting half the power of Linux.

The other day, I posted [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16675]my solution to this kind of problem[/url]. Perhaps that will help, or can be easily modified to do what Barry needs? As a bonus, it provides a cheesy GUI interfance so you don't have to use the command line.

I have to speak up in support of the OP.  I have a 6000, and I only use it as an ebook reader.  I've asked for help in these forums a few times, and every time I asked for help with kernel or driver issues I was met with almost complete silence, or speculation.

I've attempted to get GPS working with USB; no one would compile drivers for me, or assist me in figuring out how to do it myself.

I've attempted to get WPA working, but no one cared enough to help answer those questions either.

I'm not an idiot; I've installed several every major 6k-compatible "ROM" on my Z6000.  I have been using Linux for years, and before that, FreeBSD, Solaris, and even SunOS.  I can program in Perl, and I can usually get packages compiled for different systems, even though I'm not much of a C programmer.  The Z is different, though.  Cross-compiling and tiny filesystems give me a headache -- so I tried to get support for my issues on these forums.  But it didn't happen.

I'm seriously considering selling my Z6k and getting a Nokia 770 since it seems like it will have so much more support from the community and from the company that makes it.

It's a shame, too; the 6k has a lot going for it.  Except unity; there's too much fragmentation in the community.

I'm not giving up on my 6000 yet. The only thing I have seen to possibly rival it in hardware is  the Hitachi Windows Z with 128 MB ram added, or maybe the Dell x51v with 256 MB rom & bluetooth added. Unfortunately those are Windows devices though. My Z's screen still beats that hands down. The amazing screen is worth waiting for future developments. I have high hopes for Guylhem's rom, but I understand that he has a life outside of his Z. I hope he finds time for finishing his rom. So I am waiting for that. In the mean time, I'm reasonably satisfied with the default sharp rom. It works with a lot of stuff, but just needs optimizing. I wish Sharp knew what a possible goldmine they had here, and would better support further development.

In the mean time, I enjoy my little Z!! (actually my big z)

Nobody has gotten it working yet that I'm aware of.  However, it's a high priority for me and I intend to make it work in the next few weeks.  I've started getting my feet wet in the kernel.  By the way the cross compiler thing isn't so bad, you should pick up a package someone else has put together.  I think guylhem has a complete toolchain on his website.  I also use zgcc for on-board develpment which is very easy.

The 6000 community isn't dead, there's a lot of work going on in different fronts.  For example there's one guy working very hard on pdaXrom, it looks like that's going to be usable very soon.  The thing is since it didn't sell quite as well as the clamshells, there's less people, buy you couldn't pry mine mine from my cold dead hands.  It's really my perfect PDA and I keep finding ways to make it better.
