Call For Donations For Poodle Hardware
« on: February 09, 2006, 01:31:50 pm »
CoreDump has expressed that full Hentges ROM support for the Poodle will cease because of a lack of hardware to test on. I hereby request donations for the purpose of purchasing an SL-5600 so CoreDump can continue to work his magic (that is if CoreDump is willing   ).

CoreDump, do you have a PayPal (or similar) account to accept donations? It sounds like there's already some folks lined up to donate.

If you're looking to build a contact list, then put me on it.

As well, we all should also be trying to source a 5600 while we're at it. Anybody that's willing to sell, pipe up!

Add me to the list of willing donors...(of money that is).

We might want to think about getting a 2nd one to give to HRW to help with the Core OZ Development, which is what the Hentges Images are built on...

I can test with my 5600.  I just put hentges on it by the way and everything seems perfect so far.

I might consider selling or giving it, but I like it too much!

While I feel honored by this thread, I have to tell you that I'd be the wrong person to recieve this donation.

What Poodle needs is someone able to debug the kernel and driver issues on this machine. My work is just polishing a working base system.

I'd recommend contacting hrw or mickeyl about this issue as they are better suited to decide who should recieve the PDA (ie: someone able and willing to debug kernel issues).

Resolution can be donating poodle to OpenEmbedded team so we will have 3rd project device (currently got C750 and SL-6000 from TuxAward).

Mickeyl is person who know where C750 is, SL-6000 currently is at Liam who work on ALSA for WMxxxx codecs at work (thanks to him we have ALSA on c7x0, cxx00 and tosa).

Machine will be used first to debug standard OZ images so they will be more usefull, then it should go to someone who will work on 2.6 kernel support for it (currently it should have SD/MMC, CF, USB working (and probably more) with small tweaks if not out-of-box).

I would pay some money (not much, 10 to 20 Euro) for a 2.6 kernel working on the poodle.

I"ve just unearthed my 5600 after it was lying unused in a closet for few years. I just started commuting by train so having it working again would make my time pass faster :-)

I've tried the open zaurus 3.5.3 and while i am really impressed by its looks the thing has way too many bugs on my zaurus (sound is wierd, it randomly goes to sleep and refuses to turn on the backllight again, freezes in random places and requires reboot)

that said i would love to test out the newest release and even chip in some cash to get the developers the zaurus they need... so.. what do i do now ? is there paypal account or something i could use ? :-)

Many people ask how to donate to OpenZaurus project. We decided to not keep one central account for it because arrangements are very complicated when you have a fluctuating group like the contributors to OpenZaurus. Not only do contributors come and go but they also contribute to varing degrees. And as soon as it comes to money, friendly relationships are endangered. In the end it’s not worth the hassle to split the money up. That’s why we settled on individual donations.

Who does what is pretty much open - it’s listed on the ChangeLogs, it’s listed in the ipkgs (MAINTAINER), on the READMEs and you see it in forums, mailing lists, IRC.

So, just donate to the people you think which are doing things that affect you.

The second one seems to run OZ 3.5.4-test<something>, so one might strike a bargain

Hi,

I'll happily contribute $30 towards a 5600 for the OZ team.

I could, if no one else is volunteering, organise the purchase:
If a few others will make firm promises to contribute, I will undertake to buy one from ebay & pass it on to HRW.

AFTER he's confirmed reciept of the machine, the promised amounts could be paid to my paypal account to offset the cost.

I would publish full details of amounts received on here.

It looks like they are going for around $180, so if five people & myself each pledge $30 it should about cover it....

Any contributers?

Robert Jenkins.

Robert: your post sounds good (one person who will maintain whole buying, sending, getting cash from others).

Too bad that we have so little amount of developers... After 3.5.4 release I would like to get month free of all OZ related things so I could check what was on FOSDEM, look at presentations from it, check what happened in 2.6/Zaurus land in last months etc..

Robert, you can count on my pledge for $30.

That said, HRW makes a VERY good point. We can all get gung ho & supply a 5600, but without a developer willing & able to donate his/her time to it, it doesn't do us much good. Being a programmer myself, I'd love to be able to throw my hat in the ring, but unfortunately with the job, an 11 month old @ home & evening courses coming up, there's no way I could make the time, as much as I'd LOVE to.

Not that we shouldn't get a 5600 into developer hands, but another thing we need is a call for another developer. Worth far more that his/her weight in gold!!

A project poodle for team OZ would be a wise thing anyways. When I met Richard Purdie @ FOSDEM I could drag a statement out of him, that when he could get a Poodle in his hand for a couple of weeks, then he would be able to finish 2.6 support for it - which is really quite there, but the finishing touches need to be done with a machine in the hands. Others in the OZ team could check for one or the other thing to improve poodle support as well.
Cheers,
